Great book....

I'm not sure what I'll be reading next.

There's no "Books that you've just finished reading" thread, so I'll just post in here when I finish reading books from now on.

The last book I read was a novel by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn called One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. I initially started reading it because I found the cover strangely compelling (yes, I judged a book by its cover), and it seemed short enough for me to finish in a couple of lunchtimes in the library at school. I thought it was a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the Soviet labour camps - and will probably read some more books on the topic in the future. The whole idea of having to constantly barter and appease your superiors is one that frightens me - a world where you are forced to communicate effectively with others just to survive (Hey, sounds a bit like the real world, now that I think about it...)! I do admire the main character for having done so well in the camp - perhaps I could learn something from him?

I hate to double post, but seeing as no-one else has posted in this thread since my last post, I have no other choice.

I am currently reading a collection of poems from a book called "Death of a Naturalist", by Seamus Heaney. He's a very well-respected Irish poet, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I WAS reading "Different Seasons" by Steven King. It's a collection of short stories, including "Stand By Me" and "The Shawshank Redemption". However, I had to stop reading at "The Apt Pupil" because some old Nazi guy was putting cats in an oven and it made me sick.

I downloaded 1984 b George Orwell and started reading it, then I saw it at a book store so I bought it. Now I'm reading from the actual book instead of a computer screen. :thumbsup

I liked 1984. I saw the movie too as a school project, and I always thought it was funny that the main character from 1984 was the High Chancellor in V for Vendetta.

That was disgusting. The last story is worse, though, in some ways.

I'm currently reading Wyrd Sisters, by Terry Pratchett. It's the sixth book in the Discworld series.

I like 1984 a lot so far. I didn't know there was a movie, I'll have to watch it sometime.

I'm reading For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, The Morgesons by Elizabeth Stoddard, and A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid.

At any given time I'm reading at least three books, it seems, haha.

I adore Pratchett's books. I'm looking forward to reading his latest Discworld novel. : )

I'm currently reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll.
I just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I was very impressed.

Haven't been reading anything for pure pleasure in a while, most of my reading has to do with schoolwork in some way or another. Currently reading all kinds of material surrounding Virginia Woolf and Herman Bang for an upcoming project I am to do about them.

Post Re: What are you currently reading?
Today, I started reading A Son of the Circus by John Irving. The book has been sitting on my dresser for months now.

The last John Irving novel I read was The Cider House Rules which was honestly one of the greatest novels I have ever read; I couldn't put that damn book down! The film adaptation was also great, but differed a lot from the novel. Another good novel by John Irving was A Prayer for Owen Meany ---- although, it is not quite on par with The Cider House Rules. A book I've been wanting to read for years now is The World According to Garp, which is John Irving's most famous/acclaimed book.

It felt great to start reading after not having read for so long. I think I'll spend the next few days reading this book, and perhaps finish reading it in its entirety. It is nearly 700 pages in length, and the typeface size is very small, so it will take quite a while for me to finish it.

Wow, everyone is reading actual literature >.< It makes me feel so dumb. I have been reading a lot of humor books to try and get me out of this depression. I get a few laughs, but I still feel depressed all the time :( Anyway, I have been reading:

Jerry Stahl - 'Perpetual Midnight'

A tale of depravity, self loathing and drug abuse. Pretty fucking good so far.
