Ask and ye shall receive ;)

In the past, I was never really 'into' Star Trek. I mean i liked TNG (everyone likes TNG!), but it was more "hey that's not bad" than "This thing should have a special word for fans of it!". But more recently, have been watching plenty of DS9 and whatnot, and i'm starting to get all the little intricacies and references and all that. And i rather like it :D

Yay Trek Thread :D

To be honest I've had a hard time getting into DS9, I plan to keep watching it when I get the time though. Love TNG and Voyager, hate enterprise and nuetral toward TOS.
Favorite character of all time is data hands down :3 I've actually been going back lately and rewatching (more like listening while I multitask) TNG.

DS9 started off a bit slow, so i don't blame you for struggling initially. But the Dominion Wars stuff is absolutely brilliant, and is more like a film if you see multiple episodes in a row. Persevere and you shall be rewarded :p

High five on the Data-love, The EMH Doctor is my second favourite by a close margin too though.

I've always had a soft spot for any holodeck episodes too, some of the novelty episodes are a bit off but some are just great.

Where should one start if they wanted to get into Star Trek? It looks good enough that I want to watch it, but have no idea where to start. The first one doesn't really look good tbh.

I tried to get into Star Trek, since I love sci-fi, but I started with watching the very first episode of the original Star Trek, since that seemed like the best place to start, but I didn't like it at all. I tried to watch the first few episodes, but just couldn't get into it. I've seen random episodes of "The New Generation," "Deep Space Nine," & one other, & they were all good, but I'm just not sure where to start since I didn't like the original, though it's supposed to be so good, according to others.

I don't know much about Star Trek, but I almost bought this film a few years ago:

It's supposed to be one of the best Star Trek films.

Im quite into star trek, i only watch TNG and voyager though, i find ds9 and enterprise boring, the characters aren't as good. My favorite characters are probably data and the doctor mainly because i enjoy watching them progress with becoming more human and watching them learn about humanity ect. If I hadn't seen star trek i would start with TNG. Picard is a winrar.

I like Voyager the best, I think, simply because I really grew attached to Captain Janeway as a kid.

@ LyricalIllusions

All of the series are pretty independent of each other so it's really up to preference as to which to watch. I think the most people enjoy Next Gen out of all of them or rather I've never met anyone who DIDN'T like it. Next Gen is a little more optimistic about the future and deals with lots of philosophic and moral issues. I found the characters more likable and varied and there were lots of novelty holodeck episodes to break up some of the monotony of the fact that most of the show takes place on like 10 different sets (this includes Sherlock Holmes, Wild West, 3 Musketeers, Dixon Hill, etc). Also, I think it's worth noting the character Lt. Barclay who I think some of us here could identify with because of his escapist and social anxiety problems.

Voyager is a little heavier in that it takes a darker more negative approach to space travel and technology is very apparent in the multiple encounters with the Borg. I personally loved Captain Janeway but I wasn't as in love with the rest of the crew as much as Next Gen. I still think it's an excellent show and has some of the characteristics of TNG such as the holodeck episodes and philosophic tone.

Though it should be also noted that both TNG and Voyager are 7 seasons long so if you're looking for something quick and easy you might want to go with TOS. Personally, I really hated enterprise. I disliked the crew A LOT and didn't find it any where near as enjoyable as any of the other series.

I like Star Trek & TNG. It conveys the feeling of being lightyears away from here, exploring strange new worlds and stuff has always been interesting. Data always makes me laugh.

I love Star Trek (not as much as Babylon 5 and Star Wars though). I think TNG and the movies were and still are the best places to start with Trek. The original series is a bit dated, DS9 was quite slow initially, Voyager was good, but I found Janeway annoying and there was just something off-putting about Enterprise, even though they did come up with a few novel ideas for the series. Overall though the concept is great, but I find the implementation of Star Trek to be too soap-like, too disjointed from episode to episode and not dark enough.

Post Re: Star Trek
My first contact with ST was the first 6 movies. I loved the first one, with the return of the modified V'ger probe, and I also found no 4, in which they must travel back in time to find a whale, great. I didn't much care for the rest of them. The rest were between meh and okay.

The first Star Trek series I watched was Next Generation. I liked it, the characters and the adventures they were on.

I've seen some of the original episodes, but I'm no big fan of them at all. They're just too old fashioned and weirdly stiff, considering how gung ho cowboy Kirk is. Spock is the only character I like in TOS, and that may be some of the reason why I don't enjoy the episodes and movies more.

When ST Voyager was finally aired here, I fell completely in love with the series. I like Next Gen a lot but Voyager is divine in comparison, IMO. I loved the characters, how the crew was more diverse with its Star Fleet and Maquis crew, alone - lost in the Delta quadrant. I liked everything about this series more than the others. Voyager (along w B5 and Twilight Zone) is one of 3 series who are all equally my fave.
My fave character is the hot-tempered B'Lanna but I also liked the aloof and logical Seven when she joined (weirdly enough I can relate to both their personalities), and the holo doc was a hoot. And finally they added a Vulcan to the crew! I missed a Vulcan in Next Gen. Harry Kim was such a sympathetic character. I liked how intimate Janeway and Chakotay grew without it being romantic.

I watched the first season of DS9, but I couldn't really get into it, I found it dull and very disappointing.
I've never seen Enterprise.

Yep if you weren't born in the sixties you should probably start with TNG over time you will learn to appreciate TOS.

I used to be really hardcore into Voyager. Like, I spent my entire senior year utterly addicted to it. Then I joined a J/7 forum and had a bad experienced and it kind of...ruined it for me. It took me a long while to get over it. But yeah, Voyager is my favorite. Captain Janeway pwns.

I hate the new movie. I was incredibly pissed off when they destroyed Romulus. I still am. My sister loves it, though. She's never really watched Star Trek before, but insists on going on about how JJ Abrams has saved the franchise and a bunch of other bullshit.

Star Trek~

That newer movie that came out like last year was a total boner kill. I hated how prettyboy the actors were, Uhura was a whore (Hence why they pronounced it U-WHORE-a), and I don't give a fuck if it's an alternate universe, SPOCK IS MINE! D:<

I don't want that Zachary Quinto faggot though, I want Leonard Nimoy.

The worst part is I thought that cast was great except for Scotty. They could have made a great REAL Star Trek prequel.

I'm currently watching The Original Series. I really like it a lot, and I was not born in the 1960's (I'm 21).

This is also the first Star Trek I have ever watched.

CBS.com has TOS episodes online you can watch.

If you guys want a good laff, I recommend watching sfdebris' reviews of various
star trek episodes and movies. He's particularly mean to voyager and enterprise,
but only because they deserve it.

I actually quite liked it. I had to watch it twice to appreciate what he'd done, but I think it's a good idea going back and changing things. They really did capture a quality (a sort of 'roughness') that had been lost throughout the tng era series. The storyline could have been better, but sometimes you get that with pilot movies. Hopefully the next one will have a deeper more complex plot.

It was okay as far as action movies go, but the film had plot holes so big you could fly the enterprise through them.

I love the series and the films but I never watched original or DS9. Maybe I should actually watch DS9 just to have something to do.

My favorite character has to be Worf. Both the personality and the way he speaks and puts strong emphasis on many words in a single sentence.
