If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?

Nope, I'd move to Switzerland and when I feel like doing something I'd get myself as a regular on Top Gear. I think I'd cry, i watch that show like its my religion. Pretty cars make my heart race :]

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
I think I'd get a job, but it would be my own job. Screw working for someone else. That's the main thing I hate about jobs - you have to work for someone else, and go by someone else's rules.
If I had $1000000 to blow, I'd take out $100,000 to start a business, and invest the remaining $900,000.

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
Well, if I had a job I really loved, I might keep it. But I also might feel guilty, thinking, "There are other people who really need this job. And I could hypothetically live off of $1,000,000 and do something I love without getting paid for it." However, quitting my job might seem rash because $1,000,000 isn't usually enough to live off of for the rest of your life in the US anymore.
If I wanted to simply use it to go the rest of my life without working, I'd move to a country where the US dollar goes a long way but a foreigner can still be relatively safe and maintain a decent standard of living. (I've heard that in some countries, immigrants from wealthier countries are so persistently targeted by local criminal activity that it wouldn't be worth it to live there.) Laos has been recommended as a good place to go, and I know of a nice ex-pat community in Mexico (my cousin lives there). I bet there are some other appealing options in South America.
So, if I went that route, I'd just buy an average sized home in the chosen country and live a simple life - REALLY appreciating the fact that I didn't have to work anymore.
Or, more likely, I'd buy land in a remote part of the US or Australia and try to set up a self-sufficient lifestyle that would become easier to maintain over time.
Or I might use the money to start a record company - pressing vinyl records for bands I like who can't afford their own vinyl pressing. And get more involved with non-profit work.

I wouldn't. If I was rich I'd never have to do anything.

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
Possibly/most likely. If I were a millionaire I'd be able to do things my own way & it would make things much easier. I would become what I want to become in life, but do it in a way that I didn't have to be around a lot of people.

I think I'd build an arcade. Maybe start a chain. =)

I think I would go out a little more often, but I'd still stay home mostly. I think I'd go to a lot of museums, etc.

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
Actually 1 million isn't that much. Around here I wouldn't even be able to buy a modest flat for that money. But let's say that I won enough money to get by on it. Then I'd tell nav to stick it and never look back. Who the bleep wants to work (unless they really like their work, but that's true for very few) if they don't have to? Like school it only keeps you away from your *real* life. Who wants that?

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
No, I wouldn't. If I didn't have to leave my house to work, I never would. If I had enough money to have food and other essentials delivered to me, then for what possible reason would I ever consider stepping outside?? I don't have any friends, and I certainly don't desire many material things. I would only need a steady internet connection and a computer. That million dollars could be stretched through 3 lifetimes. One thing's for certain, I would find a way to make myself completely miserable. This would be a very dangerous situation for me. I think I would slip back into where I was before, and die within a few years of either alcohol or drug abuse..

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
If you'd spend it sensibly, it would last you a very long time. If you'd invest it properly, you could live off the money it would generate for an entire lifetime.

You'd run out of money very quickly that way.

I would invest a lot of it, then open a small book shop or start a truffle farm or something.

If I were a millionaire, I'd split my money, give some to the people I hold dearest... my mother could buy all the medicine she needed then. I'd buy things I always dreamt of too, of course. And maybe I'd travel too..

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
No, I wouldn't get a job. I would probably get involved in some neverending building project or something to keep me going. A sort of dream or goal. I would probably explore some more parts of the world as well in my own way. Just deciding on a tuesday I want to go somewhere and on wednesday I would be in that place.

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
1 mill isn't that much. To makes matter worse, 1 mill NOK equals 179 588 CAD (according to "Aftenposten"'s currency calculator, so a mill for you is a lot more than my poor mill. In addition Norway is a very expensive country to live in. Necessities like food and electricity are very expensive compared to the UK or the US ( I don't know anything about Canadian prices), as is entertainment (esp books and games, for that matter. Now if I'd had the equivalent to million GBP or CAD that would've been better. Now we can talk about investments! Any thoughts on what kind of business?

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
Yeah. 1 million here is like 5.5 times more money than it is there. Some people may claim that 1 million CAD/USD isn't much, but it is IMO. After all, a very small minority of people are millionaires. The reason why a million dollars often isn't considered as being much in Canada/The States is because most people are stupid when it comes to buying things. People are too greedy for their own good and blow most of their money on luxuries. Without the need for so many luxuries, a million dollars could last a long time.

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
how many millions are we talking? if it's just one mil then i'd quit my job and pursue higher education. i don't know what degree i'd pursue though. if we are talking about fifty mil then yes, i'd quit my job and never work again. Chair, would you define luxuries? in the states first taxes take away a third of that one mil, then a normal suburban house costs between two and three hundred thousand, so now we're already at less than half of what we started with and there have only been two things paid for. a very small minority of people here are millionaires here because one percent of the population possesses more than a half of the nations money. now i agree that people are reckless with thier money and especially money that they don't have (credit cards) in the states and that's exactly how we got into this mess in the first place but that doesn't mean that a million dollars is a lot of money here by any stretch.

Re: If you were a millionaire, would you bother getting a job?
I don't know, it depends on how much we're talking really. I mean, if it was just a million. I'd keep working. If it were like, $300-500 million, yes. I'd take about 10 million, and put it into some sort of sure fire investment, even if it was only a profit of like 5% a year or something... I'd be making enough to live for the rest of my life and I'd have a ton of cash to keep up with my spending habits that I'm sure would ensue just like the water if the Hoover Dam broke... it would be intense for a while until it got fixed (AKA I got it out of my system).
