Post scary music
I've noticed that there is absolutely no universal definition of "scary music" - it varies greatly depending on the person and their taste.

Therefore, I'm curious:

What music scares you? What music scares you in a good way (like a horror film)? What music scares you in a way that make you never want to hear it again?

Sunn O))) - Has a pretty scary atmosphere. Good for Halloween.

Stallagh - Gimmicky music that uses mental patients for vocals. Really frightening actually. :/

Post Re: scary music
I find some of The Screamers' stuff to be scary in a good way on record ("Punish or be Damned" especially). And I've heard that The Birthday Party was scary to see live, but the recordings don't capture the scariness for me.

Uh . . . If I listen to too much Macabre (which I like) at once, I do get truly creeped out. Their songs are all bio's of actual serial killers. It's scary because the lyrics are not only disturbing but true.

Ironically, when I listen to music that's (I guess) intended to be scary, like most death metal and such, my reaction is usually just, "Yeah, this rocks," if it's good, or "This is boring," if it's not good.

Here are some YouTube videos.

This song by Suicide is generally considered to be scary, but I don't know if "scary" is how I would describe it:

This is possibly by favorite, but I don't know if it counts as a song. It's a short story set to music:

And Syppress, woah, cool tracks. More original than anything I posted.

If you want scary music, nothing beats the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack by Philip Glass, which happens to be my favorite film score of all-time. The film itself is one of my favorites.

Here are four tracks off the soundtrack:

Organic

Clouds

Vessels

Grid Introduction

This one is scary to me... But more like a mental breakdown type of scary.

You know what terrifies me to the bone?
Little girls.

Example:

Ok, the song itself may not be creepy apart from the evil giggling in some places, but if you go and check out the lyrics...

Another madness one. This was written when Peter Green became seriously mentally ill;

I wouldn't say it's scary - more uncomfortable, at least to me.

Harold Budd/Brian Eno - Dark-Eyed Sister

Coil - At the Heart of It all

The Residents - Burn My Bones

Maybe this stuff is more eerie than scary...

I don't really get scared of music but bands like Portal have a nice scary atmosphere.

^Agreed. Portal have an amazingly scary and dark atmosphere.

CelestialSpore, Grandville and Vsnare -- Good, scary stuff. I enjoyed it.

I just remembered another band that give me the creeps. It's like too much dissonance for my brain to handle. The vocals and lyrics are weird too. I feel like reading HP Lovecraft when I listen to them.

That sounded pretty cool actually. Dissonance always keeps me interested in a song for some reason.

Also here's something that scares me. I hate knifes. Also the screaming and moaning is pretty disturbing.

Also this whole album used to disturb me. It's about the mind of serial killers.

This makes me feel physically scared sometimes. It's hard to explain, but it happens when I listen to it with my eyes closed. I went through a big noise phase in high school...

I think that Mr. Doctor - the most enigmatic person in this World is as well biggest hikikomori in the World. I devoted a lot of time to understand his mind.

Post Re: scary music
While there's many song I like that I consider "creepy" none but one has ever crept me out. It was when I was playing Gears of War online and all of a sudden I hear screeching, like a demon from hell writhing in pain. I thought it was a friggin' locust that I killed. That the game had clitched with some disturbing sound bite that wasn't supposed to be in the game. The screeches of agony persisted and I was scared shitless both in-game, rotating my analog stick constantly to look over my shoulder, and out-of-game, asking my cousin if he was hearing the same shit on my mic. Hit the guide button, and ending my concern, I find out it was "Armenia" playing off the "Heat" soundtrack.

The song doesn't scare me, but under the circumstance it sure as hell did.

Listening to this makes me feel intense despair. So far I've only been able to listen to the first 10 minutes.
