Post E-books: do you read them?
I'm building a collection of e-books. They mostly comprise classic works of fiction.

I'm going to spend the next while reading. My brain will turn to mush if I don't.

I'm starting with either The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells, The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard, The Dying Earth by Jack Vance, Solaris by Stanislaw Lem, UBIK by Philip K. Dick, Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg or Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut.

I won't be on HC much.

Oh well... :D

I will never buy such a thing. To me, it's too impersonal to read amazing stories that way.

I've downloaded a few GB worth, mostly science related. I usually end up playing a game instead of reading them though :/
Wish I could force myself to..

I dont think i could read a whole book on the computer screen, i think its more relaxing to read a real book and easier on the eyes.

Torrents are probably the way to go. At least, I have my H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King collection from torrents.

Torrent sites, Emule & IRC are your best bet. It's tough to find audiobooks though unless the books are major classics. E-books on the other hand are simple to find, even if the book you're looking for is semi-classic.

IRC is the best choice for e-books. Emule and torrent sites can be used if you can't find the title you're looking for on good IRC channels.

Lol @ IRC for downloading things if you mean dcc.

I don't really do E-books. Do I have some? Yes, but I prefer real books. Computer screens give off light; books do not. I can read a book for hours if I'm into it, but not nearly as long on a computer screen. It hurts my eyes.

Kurt Vonnegut is the best

Why is that funny?

DCC is an IRC sub-protocol - you use it to download files over IRC.

Saying that DCC isn't a part of IRC is like saying that Firefox' download manager is independent of Firefox.

before i got a kindle ebook reading was really awkward but i did it anyway. i read most of the Wheel of Time series on my computer. and then i tried pda's and my nokia tablet.. all awkward. a kindle actually makes it comfortable though, and i've started to work on all the ebooks stacked up on my drive.

Cause DCC is ancient, unsafe(does improve with ssl/ssh though), and probably the slowest method I know of for file sharing(at least in my experience, and most I've talk to about it).

Yeah, it's old, somewhat unsafe (I think) and slow, but it's seriously the best method for obtaining E-Books.

People who join E-book channels often convert lots of E-books themselves, so you can find stuff you can't find anywhere else.

E-books are tiny in size, so slow download speeds don't matter.

Yes, I guess that with smaller files it doesn't matter so much... but I get around fine as far as Ebooks go without dcc. I am not sure what kind you look for, but I find the ones I want just fine via torrents and websites like http://pdfdatabase.com.

Torrent sites are OK for popular books. Problem is that hardly any of the books I read are mainstream.

I collect quite a lot (thousands) of e-books, but so far I've not seen an ebook reader that I'd be willing to buy, so most remain sitting on my hard drive unread. One day I will read some.

It's the same for me.

Lol, I have only had a few audio books. I have the problem that I so easily fall asleep when listening to them! It's just something about that (usually) calm voice droning on that makes me drowsy despite the book being good. :closedeyes

My eyes hurt if glare at the screen too much, so I prefer a irl book over an ebook. But I do read Ebooks sometimes, when I can't get a hold of the paperback.

Only when I can't get an actual copy of the book. I find it more difficult to retain information from a computer screen most of the time. I've done more since getting my iPod Touch, though. Currently in the middle of Eating Animals by Jonathan Safren Foer on it, actually.

Not often, but I have a few.

I like having a real book better.

I wouldn't mind reading them if I had an E-book reader/laptop.

I read everything on pc, or on the Bookeen Cybook GEN3 reader.
If you intend to buy one in the future start downloading TXT or HTM files, because a lot of PDFs either look like shit on the readers (fonts too small etc..), or the file is too big to load.
