Re: Last movie you watched
Legion - 7.7/10 My father begged me to watch it with him because he doesn't like to watch scarey movies alone. This film wasn't at all scarey though, far too exciting for scarey. I have a feeling that overall it was probably a rubbish film but I couldn't help enjoying it. First of all, it's a siege movie based in the apocalypse where the fate of humanity rests with the birth of one child. I'm a sucker for siege movies, I don't think I've ever hated any that I saw, from Straw Dogs to Evil Dead to Assault on Precinct 13 (Actually that reminds me, the remake was terrible ><) and many in between. I was a little put off by some of the modern horror movie hallmarks that were in the film, like the sieging hordes being rife with 'spooky' acting; Which consists of moving your head at jaunty angles and letting the sound guys add alot of bone cracking sounds. Yet otherwise the acting was good from all the cast (not surprising consider who was in it) and even the cliched hysterical character running out from the safety of the house and putting everyone else at danger didn't piss me off. I doubt this film is for everyone but I enjoyed it very much.

The uninvited. 8/10. Sure didn't see that conclusion coming. Great ending, both the one they used and the alternate one. The stepfather (remake). 7/10.

Year One.
Pretty dumb humor, but I found it entertaining. Which probably says quite a lot about me.

Oldboy.
Very disappointing, don't understand why it's so highly acclaimed.

Re: Last movie you watched
Red. 7/10. expected more but okay.
Darkness. 6, 5 / 10. Nice, but too many dull moments throughout the movie.
Grindstone Road. 7/10.
The disappeared. 7/10.
The Gift. 5/10. Mostly boring. And I was so disgusted by the way the protagonist treated her son when he needed to talk about his dead dad, that I kinda lost interest after that. As a 40-45 minutes episode of "Medium" it would've been good, but as a 1 hour, 40 minutes movies it was about an hour too long.
Fear of the Dark. 9/10.
Never cry werewolf.

Surrogates.
I really enjoyed it, thought it was original and different. Surprised I hadn't heard more about it before-hand I suppose it wasn't highly rated by other people.

Re: Last movie you watched
I watched Red Road, a scottish movie, which was on TV here last night. Really good. The type of movie where silence sometimes says more than dialogue and many long scenes were mostly silent, creating a subtle atmosphere which sometimes felt a bit creepy. Very melancholic and gloomy with a lonely sort of atmosphere too. Not much excess dialogue anywhere, everything felt thought through and perfectly cut. No pointless scenes. Every scene contained some important clue or hint to the overall story, which was mysteriously unclear but not confusing ever. The movie was described as a mix between british social drama and thriller, and it's exactly what it is imo even though the social scenes were so minimalistically done that the thriller tension never eased up. 8,5/10 I give this movie.

Re: Last movie you watched
^ That looks really interesting. ALIEN 3Just going through the Alien Quadrilogy boxset at the moment but this was the most recent one I watched. It has quite a bit of extra footage that was deleted so it was quite interesting to see it put back in. The alien burst out of an ox instead of a dog in the original cut, not really sure why they had to change it, it didn't really matter to be honest. The documentary was what I really wanted to watch though and that was really good. It seemed to have had quite a problematic and messy production. There's a lesson to be learnt while I was watching it: Don't green light and start production on a film when the script isn't fully agreed on. Bound to piss off alot of people that way and have no real sense of direction while directing/producing it. Rewriting - parts of (?) - the script during the production doesn't seem like a smart move either. Amazed it didn't turn out to be a complete disaster.

Charles Dance saved Alien 3, I thought. Otherwise it was veering on being bad, although I'd probably still like it ^^. My father always used to say it was rubbish but I loved it anyway.

Re: Last movie you watched
^ Yeah, Charles Dance was really good in it. I don't know many other films he's been in but he was great in Alien 3. Pity he died so early in it, huh! It was the first Alien film I saw, so I've got a bizarre, vaguely patriotic defence for that film, as well as bias for liking it. My reasoning may be demented but it stands. I will concede that the first two films are superior in many ways. As for my actual preference it goes in numerical order. Alien still ranks as one of my favourite films ever made. As the documentary points out it could have been a hokey B movie and a complete novelty but thanks to everyone having a solid idea, genuine talent, and dedication to how good it could really be, it turned out great. Although judging from the documentary, the composer Jerry Goldsmith seemed abit fucked off at some of the decisions regarding his score.

Re: Last movie you watched
Was he really? I'm a little bit like you, I saw Aliens first and didn't watch Alien until much later. It's hard to let go of the nostalgic fondness of Aliens which is more a sci-fi action movie than the true creepiness of Alien. But after watching it recently, I can't deny the sheer brilliance that Ian Holm worked in Alien. Its spot on for the type of movie they were making too and of course its has the iconic moments that everyone attaches to the series. The discovery of the eggs and the bursting of the chest of John Hurt.
Alien 3 scared me the most when I was a child though, especially the scenes surrounding the moment where the guy who owns the dog gets shredded by the fan.

Donkey Xote. 7/10. reminiscent of the donkey from Shrek.
The Hitcher. 7/10.
Snarveien. 7/10. (English title: "Detour". Weird; detour is closer to what it's about, but Shortcut would've been a correctly translated title.)
The Messengers 2. 6, 5/ 10. The scarecrow was cool.
Percy Jackson and the lightning thief. 6, 5 /10.

Re: Last movie you watched
 | | | | Wikipedia wrote: Mulholland Drive is a 2001 neo-noir psychological thriller written and directed by David Lynch, and starring Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring and Justin Theroux. The surrealist film was highly acclaimed by many critics and earned Lynch the Prix de la mise en scène (Best Director Award) at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Mulholland Drive launched the careers of Watts and Harring and was the last feature film to star veteran Hollywood actress Ann Miller. The film is widely regarded as one of Lynch's finest works, alongside Eraserhead (1977) and Blue Velvet (1986), and has been chosen by many critics as representing a significant perspective of the 2000s.
Originally conceived as a television pilot, a large portion of the film was shot with Lynch's plan to keep it open-ended for a potential series. After viewing Lynch's version, however, television executives decided to reject it; Lynch then provided an ending to the project, making it a feature film. The half-pilot, half-feature result, along with Lynch's characteristic style, has left the general meaning of the movie's events open to interpretation. Lynch has declined to offer an explanation of his intentions for the narrative, leaving audiences, critics, and cast members to speculate on what transpires.
The film tells the story of an aspiring actress named Betty Elms, newly arrived in Los Angeles, California, who meets and befriends an amnesiac hiding in her aunt's apartment. The story includes several other seemingly unrelated vignettes that eventually connect in various ways, as well as some surreal scenes and images that relate to the cryptic narrative. The New York Times writes that while some might consider the plot an "offense against narrative order ... the film is an intoxicating liberation from sense, with moments of feeling all the more powerful for seeming to emerge from the murky night world of the unconscious."[1]
Despite leaving me a little confused at the end, I liked it. The monster near the beginning of the film helped me figure out early on that not every happening in the film was to be taken literally. I guess I'll watch Lost Highway tonight and will probably eventually watch Twin Peaks so that I can say that I've seen everything by David Lynch. I'm not a huge David Lynch fan, but Mulholland Dr. is definitely the best film I've seen by him thus far - I liked it better than Blue Velvet or Eraserhead (viewed while stoned). But I think Mulholland Dr. would also be nice to watch after smoking a bowl... I can see why Rezu holds this film with so much esteem (need I state the reason)?

You think Rezu so shallow Chair! I started watching Twin Peaks but stopped after the first season and haven't reminded myself yet to move onto the second, which is a shame because I think the second series is where it gets interesting. Besides, its really well acted and the characters are good too. Especially Audrey and the sheriff and whatever it is Kyle Maclachlan's character is called; I must have stopped watching it ages ago I can't even remember their names.

I just realized that David Lynch only directed six episodes of Twin Peaks. I thought he directed every episode. Hmm...

Re: Last movie you watched
 | | | | Wikipedia wrote: The film begins with a raid by the apelike Wagabu tribe on the Neanderthal Ulam tribe, who possess fire in the form of a carefully guarded small flame which they use to start larger bonfires. Obtained from a natural source, it must be fed constantly to keep it alive, for the Ulam do not know how to make their own fire. Driven out of their home after a bloody battle with the Wagabu, the surviving Ulam escape but are chased into a marsh by a pack of wolves. The Ulam fire tender escapes with the tribe's remaining fire, however after crossing a marsh, the moisture and wind douse the embers, leaving the tribe doomed to die from exposure and starvation. The Ulams refuse to resort to cannibalism and the elder decides to send three men, Naoh (Everett McGill), Amoukar (Ron Perlman) and Gaw (Nameer El-Kadi), out on a dangerous quest for fire.
After a frightening encounter with a pair of saber-toothed cats, the Ulam scouting trio enters territory of the Kzamm, a tribe who have resorted to cannibalism, and capture members of the Cro-Magnon Ivaka tribe as victims. When Gaw and Amoukar pretend to be berserker madmen, creating a ruse that causes the Kzamm tribe to scatter, Naoh manages to steal some fire, but not without being injured in a fight with two of them. One of his injuries is a bite to the genitals, and he spends a fair amount of time in visible agony from this. After killing his opponents and disposing of the Kzamm's remaining fire in contempt, Naoh rejoins Gaw and Amoukar.
A young woman named Ika (Rae Dawn Chong), an Ivaka prisoner who escapes with Naoh, follows them in gratitude, seeking protection. Despite attempts by Amoukar to drive her off, she follows, eventually taking advantage of a food-gather by Amoukar and Gaw to approach Naoh. She makes a primitive poultice, helping him recover from his injury. She also performs fellatio on him, as evidenced by the sudden look on his face, to soothe his pain, and perhaps to ingratiate herself with him.
The four begin their trek towards the Ulam, followed by the Kzamm. Attacked by the hostile tribe, the group takes advantage of a wandering herd of Wooly mammoths to make good their escape. While they travel back towards the Ulam grounds, Amoukar attempts to have sex with Ika: she hides near Naoh, who then demonstrates his claim on her by raping her in front of the other two males.
One day, Ika recognizes that she is near her home. She tries to persuade the Ulam trio to go with her, but either the men's sense of purpose or the lack of a common language with the woman (or perhaps both) keeps them together on their way back to the Ulam. However, when Ika leaves them the next morning, Naoh is upset; at first he continues without her, but finds he cannot stop thinking about her. He turns around, followed by the reluctant Gaw and Amoukar. After Naoh leaves the others to scout a village, he is trapped in a marsh, nearly sinking to his death, but is discovered and captured by the Ivaka.
At first, Naoh is teased and subjected to several forms of humiliation by the Ivaka, but eventually they accept him and show him their ways, initiating him into the tribe. The Ivaka is the most advanced tribe depicted. They have atlatls (spear throwers), arts (body painting, huts, ornaments, primitive pottery), and most importantly, the ability to make fire. When Naoh is taught by Ika how to make fire, he is overwhelmed and his life is changed forever.
Growing impatient, Gaw and Amoukar go to find Naoh and are also captured by the Ivaka. During their ordeal, they are disturbed to realize that one of the teasers laughing at them is Naoh, initially unrecognizable as he now wears the full body-paint of the Ivaka. When Gaw and Amoukar begin their escape during the night, Amoukar tries to inform Naoh of their plan but Naoh pretends that he doesn't understand their native language. Frustrated from the day's events, Amoukar 'persuades' Naoh to come along by knocking him unconscious. Ika follows the trio and helps them escape.
On their way back home, the four run into a trio of Ulam hunters, led by Aghoo, Naoh's rival as dominant male of the tribe. Left by Naoh and Amoukar to guard the fire with Ika, Gaw is severely wounded in a fight with a mother cave bear, barely managing to escape. The other three members of the group find Gaw, and Amoukar carries him over his shoulder. When attacked by the Ulam rivals, the group uses several atlatls stolen from the Ivaka to dispatch their enemies. Thus the group demonstrates the advantages of embracing new technologies.
Naoh and Ika make passionate love during a cloudburst, first by the initial, "animal" style short, rough copulation from behind seen several times before, eventually shifting around to the "missionary position", a position the Ivaka attempted to teach Naoh during his initiation. Intrigued and aroused by observing them, Amoukar approaches, Gaw, who immediately rebuffs him. They also begin to finally understand the concept of laughter, something that had puzzled them earlier about Ika and the Ivakas. When Gaw is hit on the head by a small, falling rock, they all (even Gaw) burst out laughing.
Finally rejoining the Ulam tribe, the group present the fire to the delight of all. The fire tender, having been given the flame, prompts the tribesfolk into an outburst of joy. Due to the ensuing euphoria, the fire tender ends up falling in the water, extinguishing the fire. The enraged tribe nearly kills the fire tender, until Naoh, Gaw and Amoukar restrain them and scold the group. Naoh then tries to create a new fire the way he'd been taught, by using some sticks, dung and dry grasses. After several failed attempts, the more experienced Ika takes over, carefully rubbing the dry sticks together. Once the spark is lit, the tribe is overjoyed, cheering and overwhelmed again.
In the end, Naoh discovers that Ika is pregnant with their child. Naoh caresses Ika while they both gaze at the brightly lit moon.

I wouldn't let that stop you from watching it. It's a great series, including the movie, and he still get's his demented paws all over it. Just be careful not to overdose on The Lynch -- it sounds like you've been watching a lot of his stuff recently.

Saw Adventureland earlier. A good unchallenging movie to chill out too, also it had a great soundtrack. Usually I don't pay much attention to music in films, but I found myself singing along to some of the songs.
