schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment thought up by the austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger. the idea is to show how silly it sounds that a particle can have two forms at the same time.
so experiment goes something like this... you have a steel box, within the steel box you put in a cat, a small vessel which contains a tiny amount of radio active material, a glass of cyanide, and a detector connected to a hammer.
within a set time the radio active material has a 50/50 chance of decaying radioactively. if the material decays, the detector will detect it and will trigger a hammer which will smash open the glass of cyanide, killing the cat.
now lets say the radio active material has a 50/50 chance of decaying within an hour, and you close the box for one hour. within this hour there is a chance that the material will decay and kill the cat. YET at the same time there is also a chance that it didnt decay and the cat is alive. since during this time we dont know whether the cat is alive or dead, it is in a superposition state. it is both alive AND dead. it is only when one observe and opens the box, we determine if the cat is alive or dead.
