Post Which social situations do you dislike?
Uhm...

In two weeks there is a family party to celebrate a round birthday of somebody.
There will be lots of people there and I'm kinda scared. *sigh*
I hate going to parties like that. And because there will be always someone to go to you and say: "My god, you've grown so fast! How old are you? I remember you were so little..."
I feel like an idiot when I'm only smiling embarrassingly and can't say some intelligent words. :(

What about you? What social situations would you like to avoid most? =/

Oh yea, family meetings the most, occasion is irrelevant. And EVERY SINGLE TIME at least one person makes dumb insensitive jokes of me being vegetarian. Also, I always feel like a failure when I see their faces when they're talking about me. You can totally see "awh, poor boy, I most certainly hope he'll get out of it eventually". Just care about your goddamn business and leave me alone >.<

New Years party at my dads house, I find parties to be EXTREMELY boring. Everyone seems to just have a great time standing around talking and drinking but I dont see any point to it. I suppose its because its just not my type of do. Im going to make a note to go to bed early at the next new years party, I'll drink a few drinks just to get me tired, say goodbye to all my rells and then just go to bed.

Parties in general, especially the ones involving my family, are really awful. And anything where I have to be in a room with a stranger, where the door is closed, like meeting with the school counsellor.
And I really really hate bus rides. I'm often late because I avoid the crowded bus...

I never quite understood the point of that either. It's annoying when people sometimes ask why I never have any fun, because I don't drink alcohol and go to parties. Those kind of activities just aren't what I'd call 'fun'.

But mostly I fear social situation where me, or my work, will be reviewed by peers. Scares the bajeezes out of me. It has caused some hard times at school.

parties with my family are ok. everyone is pretty laid back, drinking good beer and eating bbq, telling bad jokes, and playing poker or whatever. but parties with my husband's family and family friends are hell. they are all very uptight, very religious people. everything has to be very formal, and if anything isn't perfect my husband's dad will hear about it in church the following sunday. they nearly threw his family out of the church when they found out we were living together before we got married. luckily they avoid talking to me about religion since i have been deemed unfit to attend their church. i can't imagine what it would be like trying to explain pantheism to a southern baptist, lol.

I hate family meeting because i always feel that i don't belong there. And also hate it because I ALWAYS say something embarrassing.

All of them. It's why I have no friends & can't be around my family.

wow, I'm the same. My mom drags me to my aunts house every thanksgiving and its not just for the meal and then me leave. No, we have to get there at around 9am and we never leave till about 4pm. While they're all cooking and making conversation about me asking my mother if im eating okay or if my social skills are any better in the kitchen I'm having a staring contest with her dog. As if that cant get worse whenever dinner is ready they all gang up on me saying how hard it is to cook some vegetarian food for me. I just sit there staring at the dog. Relatives are the worst.

Another horrible situation is in school when you have to present projects. Ive accepted plenty of Ds or Fs because I refuse. I can barely stay calm in a one on one conversation how am i expected to go infront of a class and talk while they're staring? makes me want to cry just thinking about it.

Awh Alice, that sucks even to hear :(
I really don't understand "cooking for vegetarians" arguement :/ I mean, according to "them", it's easier to turn something into meal than NOT TO turn something into meal :S

yea, everyone thinks its stupid to be a veggie. I'm a big animal person though and when I took a trip with my mom to the country once I got to pet a cute cow ^^ hehe but a couple of days later when we were heading back home i stopped by again but was told the cow I had seen earlier had been slaughtered the day before. That was when I stopped eating meat. I don't expect anyone else to stop its just a personal choice in all.

Online Gamers in Teamspeak or VOIP who think they are the most skilled players in the world fill me with endless rage, since I meet more people in the Internet than in real life its the most common situation at the moment.
Thats why i rarely use my headset other than simple teamcommands.

I cringed at everything on Grandville's list! ^^ Those things are huge anxiety triggers for me as well.

I also feel anxious over:
Class presentations
Sitting through university lectures
Taking the bus
Trying on clothes in a department store, then having to come out of the change room to look at myself in a mirror. (I get anxious over what store employees or other shoppers might be thinking about my fashion sense.)

Post Re: Which social situations do you dislike?
Other than being around my parents, I dislike all kinds of social situations.

At times I can exchange a few words with someone who shares an interest (like talking to a dog owner about their dog), but while I like dogs it'd be an exaggeration to say that I enjoy talking to their owners.
In jr high I enjoyed a few get-togethers with some of the girls in my class, even though it left me very tired.

If I had to be social, I'd suffer a nervous breakdown quickly.

I get that too. Whenever they land themselves in the top score listings, they think they're hot shit and talk down on everyone else who play at a lesser level of skill. They're starting to become common among kids who are still too young to play rated M games and teens who are wannabe gangsters who sound like they dropped out of school.

This is one reason I stray away from most online social communities.

I generally avoid situations in which the atmosphere isn't 'good' so to speak.
School is a big one. Everyone's so stressed and everyone's flying rumors around and then someone I don't know calls my name and hits up a conversation with me... Ugh.

Then there are large family get togethers, or events my guild does that stress everyone out, or when it seems everyone I talk to has been having a bad day...

This one caught my attention. Sounds very unnerving.

Grandville mentioned waiting in line, which I also hate. I never know how to stand.
I try to look nonchalant, but I don't want to appear overly so, for fear of looking too
obvious. I mean, I don't stand there and whistle, but you get my meaning..

The phone, of course, which a lot of ppl here seem to have issues with.

Oh, and I hate eating in public.

Me too.
Though I have to admit I never had a problem with it when I was still going to school. I had a long way home so I always bought something warm to eat it in the train.
But then later I read in a forum where two - actually very nice people - talked about how they dislike people eating in public. Because of the smell and so on...

Do you know that? If you're secretly listening to people about what they don't like to see in public - will you then care about that you're not making this mistake, too? :scratchhead

Where to start?

Let's see...

Parties, weddings, funerals(only been to one of these, thankfully), getting applications, job interviews, doctor appointments, gossip and small talk, someone ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door when I am not expecting anyone, strangers talking to me in public, some holidays; Christmas, Thanksgiving especially since my family does get-togethers and we all meet up somewhere, eating in public sucks for me cause I hate listening to others eat....

That's all I can think of for now...

Oh my gosh! That's exactly why standing in line freaks me out too! I feel like everyone is staring at me, so I keep adjusting my posture to look normal and relaxe. Then I feel like everyone is onto me, so I'll tense up again. And then I'll change my posture again! I always just want to disappear.

Post Re: Which social situations do you dislike?
what i dislike about these situations is not the people really but the lie that i have to become when i am in these situations. i could be honest with them, but honestly i consider making my life harder an even larger time / energy waster.

job interviews - i hate telling a total stranger about what my plans are in the next five years, having to lie about what i am interested in because were i to tell the truth i'd come off as a snob, or answering a plethora of bourgeois questions. (current example: the tonight show)

anything to do with my parents / in laws, siblings, aunts, uncles - they all think that they know me and the truth is they don't know shit about me. it's so hard having to don that mask and smile and pretend to be someone i'm not. particularly with my parents and sister i become a pathetic binge drinker when they are around and that's not who i want to be.

religious solicitation - when strangers come to me and talk to me about jesus or the spirits or scientology or how i'm lost without their one right path i just wanna loose but i always lie and say i'm buddhist.

political conversations - the red scare is still heavy in the states and not many of the citizens know what socialism even is. worse, most have a distorted misguided view about what socialism is and attempting to correct them is a draining but time wasting experience. i have to just say i'm a democrat to avoid the plague of idiocy.

Uhhhh, this. I don't even check who's on the door if I'm not expecting anyone. Same with the phone.
