Post Re: Questions for Bookworms
a. Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?

r. Successful bestsellers you didn't enjoy?

s. Books you've stopped reading after a few pages?
my mom gave me a book that i couldn't stand! the first few pages talked very graphically about how women aren't good for anything except sex, especially in the butt, and how they need to shut up when men are talking. i don't remember what it was called, but it was the only book i've every thrown away. i never made it past the first ten pages, i was completely disgusted.

Post Re: Questions for Bookworms
a.Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
Mass market paperback cause they are lighter, takes up less space (I have a LOT of books) and are cheaper.

b. Amazon or brick and mortar?
I used to only use b & m, and have only recently (last few years) been active user of the net for purchases. It’s definitely easier, and gives me a chance to check out reviews.
But when I am downtown, I always pop in at the only store in town who specialises in sci-fi, fantasy and horror, and very much enjoy checking out the stock and special sales, and even in kiosks and groceries I check out their poor selection.

c. Bookmark or dogear?
Neither. I can easily see approximately how far I’ve read and quickly find the spot. I seldom think of using bookmarks and don’t like dogears.

d. Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
Neither. I just remember where they are, and only divide them by genres (to some degree) and read and unread.

e. Keep, throw away, or sell?
Keep it if it’s good, throw (in the recycling bin) if not. I’ve tried selling them and have had so little luck it’s not worth the bother.

f. Keep dustjacket or toss it?
It depends on whether the book cover is smooth or rough. I keep them if it’s rough, as I don’t like to touch the surface.

g. Read with dustjacket or remove it?
See f.

h. Short story or novel?
The only thing that matters is that I like the story. Sometimes I want something long, at other times I only have patience or concentration span for short stories.

i. Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Usually anthologies on topics I like.

j. Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
HP.

k. Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
When tired (or out of time).

l. “It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
Both can work if done right, but I'm likely to be more into dark and stormy, since I need the book to captivate me quickly or I might lose interest.

m. Buy or borrow?
Buy.

n. New or used?
New if available. Used can look really bad.

o. Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
I like reading reviews so I at least have some idea, especially when books are compared to other books I know, and people are good at getting through what they liked or didn’t like. It can give me some idea, but I only use them as assistance, I never base the final decision entirely on them. I’m very sceptical of recommendations as I have never met anyone whose taste really was compatible with mine.

p. Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Whatever works best for the story.

q. Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
Whenever I have the time and/or the desire.

r. Successful bestsellers you didn't enjoy?
Most of them don't interest me one bit.

s. Books you've stopped reading after a few pages?
Loads! If they don’t capture my interest quite quickly, I don’t have the attention span or patience to keep at it.

t. Three books for an lonely island?
Hard one! One of my favourites.
A fat photo album loaded with pictures of family and pets in different situations.
One of my turtle books (one with lots of beautiful photos).

u. Books you had to read for school?
Knut Hamsun: ”Victoria”
John Steinbeck: ”Of mice and men”
Both terrible yawns that I didn’t get through.

v. Favorite fairy tales?
The 3 little pigs.
Now I enjoy anthologies with new spins on the classic fairy tales, either moving them into a modern setting, or

w. Favorite classics? (at least published 50 years ago)
Not too fond of classics, really, but Jules Verne is pretty good.

x. Favorite authors?
I’m usually more into particular stories than authors, but some writers I usually have a liking for: Dean Koontz, K A Applegate, Isaac Asimov, Gregory Benford, John Saul, Sylvia Engdahl, H M Hoover, Alan Dean Foster, Terry Pratchett.

y. Favorite series?
I don’t know if I have any anymore. As a kid it was Ruffen and The famous five, later it become Animorphs. Now I’m really not so sure I have any. I like Odd Thomas and Christopher Snow by Dean Koontz.

z. Favorite books of all time?
George Zebrowski: “Sunspacers” trilogy
Dean Koontz: “Watchers”, “Strangers”, ”One door away from heaven”, his books about Christopher Snow and Odd Thomas
Lois Lowry: “The giver”
Sylvia Engdahl: “The far side of evil”, “Enchantress from the stars”
Eric Knight: “Lassie come home”
Julia Ecklar: ”Regenesis”
Stephen King: ”Pet sematary”
Frank Schatzing: ”The swarm”
Isaac Asimov: ”Nemesis” (+ all his short story collections)
Larry Niven: ”The Draco Tavern”

Post Re: Questions for Bookworms
a. Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
Mass market paperback. Most comfortable to hold, but also the cheapest. I really dislike having to read hard cover books at all. Uncomfortable to hold, and I tend to destroy the binding on them anyways.

b. Amazon or brick and mortar?
Brick and mortar because I like to browse. Amazon wins for price, though.

c. Bookmark or dogear?
Bookmark. I usually use the receipt or an index card. I used to dogear but it started to annoy me.

d. Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
Author. Although all of my books are sorted by subject and then order of the series if it's a series, and I'll lump authors together but the authors aren't in alphabetical order.

e. Keep, throw away, or sell?
Keep! I can't stand it when people say to sell old books. Fuck you! I might read them again! It's highly probable! Textbooks I'd sell, though. Even the ones relevant to my course are obsolete in a few years, so I might as well try and recuperate some of that cash.

f. Keep dustjacket or toss it?
Keep it. If I pay for a damn hard cover I'm damn well keeping every last bit of it. Even the price sticker.

g. Read with dustjacket or remove it?
Remove. Sometimes I read with it on if I don't like the color of the book, though. Or if I want to show off how intellectual I am by flaunting the title...

h. Short story or novel?
Novel. I prefer long series, so short stories always seem kind of...abrupt. I don't want it to end.

i. Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Collection. I like that cohesive feeling that comes with reading short stories in one author's style, instead of breaking it up and having to get used to it each time you get to a new one.

j. Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry Potter! All Lemony Snicket was was something to cash in on desperate kids who were waiting for the next book in the Harry Potter series to come out.

k. Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Chapter breaks, if I can. Makes me feel more complete.

l. “It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
Once upon a time.

m. Buy or borrow?
Buy. I hate borrowing books.

n. New or used?
Either or. Used because it's cheaper and I can get more books for the same amount of money...

o. Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
Book reviews. I generally go by Amazon lists for my recommendations.

p. Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Tidy. Unless it's part of a series, then cliffhanger until the last book which should have a tidy ending.

q. Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
Afternoon and night. Too sleepy in the morning to try and read.

r. Successful bestsellers you didn't enjoy?
The Road. So. Boring. I get the point, I just don't need 300 pages of walking to enforce the poignancy.

s. Books you've stopped reading after a few pages?
The Virtue of Selfishness, Naked Lunch

t. Three books for an lonely island?
Two anthologies of lesbian erotica, and Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters. If I'm gonna be lonely, I might as well be entertained.

u. Books you had to read for school?
A lot. I only read about half, though. Post Re: Questions for Bookworms
a. Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
Depends. If it's a series, I try to match up the rest of the books in the series with the version I ended up getting the first book in. (Example: since I got the MMPB of GRRM's first work, I'm going to wait to get Dance of Dragons until it's in MMPB too.) Other than that, I tend to go for cheapest edition, unless I find a beautiful edition of something I really like and splurge.

b. Amazon or brick and mortar?
I like to support my brick and mortar, because I believe bookstores are important places, but a lot of the things I want are sort of obscure, so it's off to Amazon! Or paperbackswap.

c. Bookmark or dogear?
Neither? Usually I just turn the book upside-down at where I left off.

d. Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
In my ideal library, I'd have enough room to organize all my books by Library of Congress numbers. At the moment, it's roughly divided into sections and then alphabetized by author within those sections. Except for manga, which is alphabetical by title, and larger volumes are kept in a separate section for better storage regularity.

e. Keep, throw away, or sell?
...KEEEEEEEEP! Or swap on paperback swap if it's really horrendous.

f. Keep dustjacket or toss it?
Keep the dustjackets for manga, toss the ones for novels and such.

g. Read with dustjacket or remove it?
Remove.

h. Short story or novel?
Novel.

i. Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Collection.

j. Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Snickett--wasn't amazing, but I hate Harry Potter with a bright white fury.

k. Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Chapter breaks.

l. “It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
Dark and stormy nights are kinda my bag. :cool

m. Buy or borrow?
Buy.

n. New or used?
Not important, as long as it's mine now.

o. Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
Browse. I've been known to read whole library sections from A to Z in search of good new authors. I'm willing to read crap if it brings me some gems.

p. Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Mindfuck cliffhanger

q. Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
Morning or night, I'm usually too sleepy in the afternoons.

r. Successful bestsellers you didn't enjoy?
DaVinci Code, Harry Potter, Twilight, anything by James Patterson, The Cell was by far the worst King book I'd ever stumbled on to...

s. Books you've stopped reading after a few pages?
More like books I've thrown into the wall numerous times while forcing my way though to the end because it's blasphemy to not finish something:
The Great Gatsby
Things Fall Apart
Every history textbook from freshman year onwards
Any book by Kate Chopin
First Twilight volume came worryingly close to breaking through the screen window and making it out into the gutter
Fifth volume of Harry Potter series
Sixth volume
Seventh volume hit the wall so hard it left a hole in the drywall (which I covered with a poster and got away with...mostly) and it stayed under my bed for a week

...I'm serious, I have a really bad habit of getting pissed and throwing around books that disappoint me.

t. Three books for an lonely island?
A compilation of numerous Jeeves and Wooster novels, Howl's Moving Castle, The Tragic Sense of Life

u. Books you had to read for school?
The Joy Luck Club :mad
Things Fall Apart :@
The Awakening :sick
Macbeth <3
Encounters with the Archdruid :thumbsup
The Solace of Open Spaces :)
Oedipus Rex :confused
Tess of the D'Urbervilles :sick :sick :sick
All Quiet on the Western Front :surprised
A Rumor of War :mad
The History of the Pelopponesian War :halo :halo :halo

...I could go on forever.

v. Favorite fairy tales?
Foolish Emilyan and the Talking Fish, and other "lolwhut"grade Russian fairytales

w. Favorite classics? (at least published 50 years ago)
Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradburry (okay, so it's 49 years old, cut me some slack)
Asimov's original Foundation trilogy
The Lord of the Rings
MacBeth
The Maltese Falcon
The Big Sleep
...man, even my "classics" are sort of trashy, lol.

x. Favorite authors?
Terry Pratchett, Bill Bryson, PG Wodehouse, Neal Stephenson, Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Douglas Adams, Mark Z. Danielewski...I guess I could stop there...

y. Favorite series?
Pratchett's Discworld, Asimov's Foundation, Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently series, the Johannes Cabal series...I...read a lot of series.

z. Favorite books of all time?
Howl's Moving Castle
House of Leaves
Something Wicked This Way Comes

Novel. Sometimes I get fond of short stories but generally I like novels more.

Lord of the Rings. The Idiot.

t. Three books for an lonely island?
Some book about Buddhism. Any book from Yukio Mishima. A picture book about animals.

u. Books you had to read for school?
Some young adult books, Lord of the Flies (William Golding), The Unkown Soldier (Väinö Linna), Perfume (Patrick Süskind), Piano Teacher (Elfriede Jelinek). Other books as well but they weren't novels.

v. Favorite fairy tales?
The Happy Prince, The Ugly Duckling.

w. Favorite classics? (at least published 50 years ago)
The Metamorphosis (Franz Kafka), The Temple of the Golden Pavillion (Yukio Mishima), Diary of a Madman (Nikolai Gogol), The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (H. P. Lovecraf), A Passage to India (E. M. Forster) those come to mind first...

x. Favorite authors?
Yukio Mishima, Nikolai Gogol, H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Imre Kertész, Andreï Makine.

y. Favorite series?
I must say... the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories. I've never read that many books of any series (read close to 100 of them).

z. Favorite books of all time?
Same answer goes as for the classics question.
