taking fish oil pills is supposed to help with depression, and can even help with bi-polar disorders. also, vitamin d helps with depression. that's why it feels good to go into the sun, it's the vitamin d rush to your brain.

Prozac.

But seriously, all I need is some good music, fresh air, and maybe a drink or two.

Fish oil (with Omega 3), Vitamin B Complex too. These are what I take daily, or almost daily. I also find going for a workout when I feel depressed helps release pent-up negative energy. I avoid caffeine as much as I can and replace them with herbal teas, and watch a lot of comedy. However, most of the time I feel so shitty I can't find the motivation to do all these.

Me too. Minus the fresh air. Oh, and add the word 'cases' at the end of the above quote.

yepp, DEFINITELY good music. and yes to fresh air and going for a run or a workout (plus a sauna/steam room afterwards).
and, as gay as it might sound, gardening outdoors. when i feel down and blue i go and muck around in my mother's gardens, clean them up a bit, watch the birds, get some sun on me, spend time just thinking to myself while i work.

For some strange reason, I find chewing gum help me concentrate on whatever activity I plan to do, really helps me think better and focus, that is if you have something at hands you have to do.

Video games. Big time.

Also do something productive like play an instrument or learn a language. I'm using this Before You Know It program to increase my Japanese vocabulary.

Lots and lots of thinking. I do my best thinking when I'm depressed. I always seem to have a better train of thought. More linear.

Beer helps depression too lol

- Watch a feel-good film.

- Take a walk.

- Play a videogame.

- Listen to an encouraging/beautiful song with meaningful/uplifting lyrics.

- Read a book.

- Share your thoughts, feelings and expressions with other people, especially those who have gone through a similar experience you have gone through.

- Laughter.

- Love.

- Limerence.

- Family and friends.

Did this help?

Shooby Taylor.
Works his magic pretty much 90% of the time! (^_^)
God bless him.

Music is a definite remedy for me - the more bizarre and unconventional the better.
Hoped I helped someone out today.

I have to agree on Fish Oil! Omega 3 specifically. I use Coromega, which comes in a packet like a ketchup packet. So fish breath and no fish burps or upset stomach.

I was able to get off anti-depressants altogether by going natural. I still have natural ups and downs, but I have been able to avoid extended depressive states and unlike with anti-depressants, I haven't lost emotion and drive.

It's hard for me to be sure which supplements I take are best to fight depression. One thing I've tested on and off and found makes a big difference for me is something people usually would never think of. A good mix of Amino Acids! I use a protein drink mix that loaded with numerous amino acids, once a day. When I've taken a break from using it, I've noticed depression creeps back in eventually. I also use these two supplements: Vinpocetine and DMAE. Both help provide the building blocks for better brain chemistry. I just take a small dose of each. Helps with depression and gets rid of mental fogginess and improves attention span.

I also take vitamin D, a good multivitamin, Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C.

If anyone wants to try any of these, you might want to add one at a time, instead of all at once, just to see if they are good for you. It can take a few weeks before some of these may effect your depression. I think a quality Omega 3 supplement and the Vitamin D (along with a good multivitamin) might be the best place to start.

I think a good amount of our depression is chemical in the brain, which is the part that may be made better with the right supplementation. However, some depression is a natural reaction to events in our lives. I still have some depression from time to time, but never as severe or as constant as before I found the right supplements for myself. Everyone's chemistry is a little different. There are some supplements often documented for depression that I haven't listed above, because they didn't work for me personally. That's one reason why it's a good idea to start slow and try to get an idea what seems to help you.

Music really depresses me. I depend on Amphetamine to keep me happy. But it wears off at night time. Anti-depressants do NOT work. Definitely not. I'm a bipolar schizophrenic speed addict. :drool

Hmmm well I like to watch anime and video games. I find that exercise is one of the best ways to feel better about yourself. Mmmm endorphins.

Sugar raises my mood, so chocolate is the solution to everything. It takes effect really fast.

  1. mood: I keeeeel you all
  2. *chomps down whole bar of chocolate*
  3. mood: okay
  4. mood: I keeeeel you all

This cycle takes about 30 minutes. With bananas the cycle takes half a day, but I really don't like the taste (maybe this contributes to the cycle length, I guess glucose working slower than fructose or something like that is the main reason, I am not a doctor).

Ah yes we cannot forget about sugar I try to avoid that remedy. Because I tend to crash and fall into a deeper depression.

make lists and goals; even if i never achieve those goals or make sense of those lists i can still have a short-term feeling of "things are going to be okay". :/

Hmm..very interesting suggestions you have there. i'm definitely going to try some of them out! Thanks for suggesting them isolatedearth!

My current remedies are: exercise (many of you have suggested it too! Awesomeness), eating my veggies (feeling healthy on the inside makes me feel better), going outside (suffering from demophobia and anxiety right now so it's not that easy atm), and socializing (again, demophobia and anxiety cramp my style)

Things that MAKE my depression worse: being by myself (the thoughts just get to me!), eating crap (sugar included unfortunately :sad ).....yeah.

Post Re: Share your depression remedies
When I'm severely depressed (as in fantasizing about ending it all), I actually seek out the company of other people. The main reason is that I know I won't impulsively do anything to hurt myself in the presence of someone else; I'm too nice to inflict that on anyone. The other reason is that being around people often takes my mind off my self-destructive / depressing thoughts, and sometimes even genuinely cheers me up.

Lately, this has developed into an interesting strategy for dealing with my own persistent grief: being there to listen to other people talk about their problems. Focusing on someone else's problems and trying to be there for them takes my mind off my own problems.

So, really, my lingering grief over all I lost in 2009 has caused me to become a lot more social, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Now I'm thinking I might be better off in the city than the country since I have this increasing need to be around other people a lot.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Traditionally, my depression prevention methods have been creative expression, exercise, eating a healthy diet, and having a routine with plenty of stuff to do so I don't have too much time to get lost in depressing thoughts.

But when it comes down to it, just having 1 or 2 really good friends makes all the difference - people who can always make me laugh and lighten my mood.

The older I get, the more I realize how rare such friends are. So I try to treat the ones I've got really well and do what I can to make the friendship last even if we no longer live anywhere near each other.
