i knew that anonymous would do something about SOPA and PIPA but they totally flipped out when megaupload went down. apparently they hacked a CBS and a couple of other sites.... now they're planning on a mass DDOS attack at facebook on the 28th :kiss i also am glad mediafire is still around~
i dont think will bring megaupload back, what do you guys think?

The free internet is collapsing.

I was feeling a little panicked about this before, but after pondering this for a while I'm no longer that worried. I need to stop panicking when these file-sharing services close down. The last time I panicked about something like this was when Oink's Pink Palace closed down back in 2007. I figured that nothing would ever supersede Oink and that if anyone would attempt to create such a site again that it would just get closed down right away. Well, just days after Oink closed down, two new Oink clones -- What and Waffles -- were created. They've been around for three or four years now and still haven't been taken down.

Remember when Napster closed down? When that happened, people were freaking out and thought it was the end of file-sharing. That was nearly ten years ago now, and file-sharing is steadily becoming more popular and file-sharing methods are becoming more advanced.

When these things close down, people just create something new or flock over to something else. The closure of MegaUpload and FileSonic is just a temporary setback.

Polish stoopid politicians will sign ACTA. If there were another planet I would emigrate there.
I'm thinking about my shut-in mother who is all day watching TV series (like CSI or True Blood) on megavideo. I'm thinking how terrible she feel by now.

I believe they are trying to use megaupload as an example to support SOPA and PIPA, now some smartass politician would go on saying that if this new bills are approved things like megaupload would never happen in the first place and that will somehow improve the us economy :mad

let's hope the internet as we know it last a bit longer... because it's going down the toilet :'(

Hmmm... to be honest I have never really cared about Megaupload. So... I am not all that upset about this. Maybe that is just me. I have always been able to find what I want using torrents... even if it takes a little longer.

Personally, I don't see MU as an example since it was maybe more like a personal grudge. For reference here a picture of the founder:

source: http://torrentfreak.com/megaupload-shut-down-120119/

I also wouldn't already call it the end of free internet, since like it was already mentioned before even when Napster or Kazaa went down the drain, file-sharing persisted and likely always will as long as there is an internet.
I'd rather call it an example of page 2 of the 300 pages manual for psychological warfare: "shoot a fat rat and watch the smaller ones flee in terror, crippling themselves meanwhile."

FileSonic, FilePost, WUpload, ZShare and many more either closed or deleted most of/all the stuff. MultiUpload is basically dead.
From how see it, Mediafire is currently more or less forced into the resulting empty space, but with being located in Texas, I'd also call it a rather easy shot clay pigeon.
File-sharing in general won't be bothered by this, but from my perspective I see the highest damage dealt in the sector of all the thousands of music blogs that were designed to share rather unknown and/or rare stuff you wouldn't otherwise find on torrent sites. This angers me personally more than anything else.

To you people who upload and share files quite often: I recommend this.

You can upload 1 GB of stuff at a time (and more, if you split large files into multiple archives). Another great thing about it is that you don't have to fully upload something before being able to send it to someone.

My main complaint about it is that both you and the person you're sending files to has to have the Pando client installed.

It can be excellent for sharing things between a community (HC) tough, i think.

Thanks for the info Aillas! :thumbsup.

Yeah, quite a few file hosts ended up getting screwed because of this. They're scared that the same thing will happen to them, so a lot of them have disabled downloads. It's made it harder to download stuff now. I had to start downloading torrents and I hate torrents.

I went to download a show in Spanish the other day and realized that this has completely decimated most of my access to foreign TV. :neutral

I realize that most shit will just be uploaded to rapidshit or somewhere, but the speeds for all of those suck. :thumbsdown

I'm considering re-uploading some of the stuff I've snatched from FileSonic and MegaUpload over the past few years.

Tons of rare stuff I've snatched from those sites is now nowhere to be found.

It betters you in much more ways than you think, or even in more ways than are visible.
