How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
Okay, so if you choose to stay out of the way of the public and all that comes with it, it would mean surely that you don't work as you don't leave. My question is how do you afford not having to work and being able to live the life of freedom?

Work from home with rent that's geared to income.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
I do pretty well working from home. I will be renting out the master bedroom from next year which will cover roughly half the mortgage repayments. I am a bit worried about finding the right person though. I'll try to get a student or some such.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
I'm happily married to a man 16 years my junior, who has a pair of master's degrees and the job to match. I keep house, shop, and cook, and I take very very good care of him. We met while he was getting his second master's degree, in the States. He's Belgian, and that's why we live outside the USA (Germany, UK, South Africa, and Switzerland, so far).
I don't have problems with work, so long as I get enough time to myself, and don't work in the same place too long. In the States, that meant I'd become what I call a "professional temp". With my computer and accounting education, I was over-qualified and damn good, with the added bonus that I'd become expert at going in to new places and usually within 2 hours, I was getting more done than the permanent folks.
If anything, I'm suffering a bit for want of some employment. I miss the extra stimulation. My ideal job would be 6-hours a day, 3 days a week. I once had a temp assignment that was only a 6-hour day, and found that I could handle that without misery. 8-hour days, all week, get me down after just 2 weeks--Assuming I'm not living alone.
My partner is offended when people suggest there is something odd with my not working. We don't need the money, and it works very good for us as a unit, to have me in charge of the house. I enjoy being the domestic, for the most part. He enjoys doing things differently than people expect.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
As I said before, I live with my parents still and I also get disability money. The swedish disability system can be one of the most generous in the world. I'm saving for a comfortable life when I move out from my parent's house. Furniture, clothes and some money on the bank. Then I will keep saving and avoiding society.
I'm a really peaceful and spiritual person when I can shut the door to the outside world but if I'm forced to participate in social life/work etc I gradually turn into a fragile narcissistic/borderline/passive aggressive/bipolar mental wreck on the inside. I came to a point where I had to decide if I wanted to keep trying to adapt and keep being miserable, confused and full of hatred, or if I wanted to find peace and do what my instincts told me and withdraw into my own world. I would lie if I didn't say the disability money actually saved my life. If it wasn't for my AS-diagnosis, I would have been dead from suicide I suspect. Atm I don't feel suicidal at all though and I haven't done for years ever since I became a recluse for real.

I live with my parents, but they don't want to support me any more, not about studies or anything. They tell me everyday to leave home, it's a difficult relationship.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
I live with my mother. I'm still a student taking part in a distance learning course which allows me to study for my high school graduation at home. Though it needs lots of discipline and motivation. But at least I can stay at home. But I don't know if I can ever be able to go work... it's hard.

For those that work at home. Where and how did you find a decent work at home job. All the ones that I have found appear to be scams.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
Get Student Grants to Study to be a Nurse, and Disability for my various 'mood disorders" . I think of this as being paid to "stay away from society".
Currently, I am self-financing a tentative "gender reassignment" program. This leaves me dirt poor , and now alone most of the time in solitude. My only friend made nasty comments when i was verbally celebrating my transformation, and now I am poor, alone, and avoiding people altogether.
My Education is Online, and I was informed this year I cannot ever be employeed because I am crazy and a transsexual. Suppose I will get some kind of job in Nursing to pay my way in life when I am able. My deep social phobia prevents me from going to school full time. Although at 31, I'm happy as I've ever been, and do try dating some.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
My dad actually got me set up with someone who does transcribing for television shows. I've never met my boss and all of it is sent through email and FTP. The pay is good, but I only usually end up working 2 days a week. 4 if I'm lucky. More than that if I'm really lucky.

I get a sickness benefit and live at home with my parents. I like my parents but its a pretty miserable, de-motivating life.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
Staley; there are very few options.
1. You work from home. 2. You receive disability/welfare money from the government. 3. You've inherited a large enough amount of money from rich family member(s) which allows you to live a highly reclusive lifestyle. 4. You 'mooch' from your parent(s). 5. You're a drug-dealer who deals from his/her home (that could sort of be considered as being 'working from home').
Those are most people's only options, or, at least I can't think of anything else at the present.

I go with number 4. like most people, still trying to stand on my own feet though. The 1. one would me something like a dream for me, lol.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
My husband works. I stay home and take care of the house and he goes to work. I worked for awhile and tried going to school last year but I could not handle it. Luckily he has a good job and doesn't mind supporting a housewife and I don't mind being one.

My husband works. I wouldnt mind having a job, but I want a part time job that pays well, is fulfilling, and comes with respect....probably impossible.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
Well, for me, I've never worked, but that certainly doesn't mean I'm living a life of freedom. I wish it did. Every day of my life is immensely difficult due to my inability to function in a social world. Me & my mom live on her SSI, which is less than $700 per month. The only way we're able to do that is because we're on Section 8, which is a government program that helps low income people pay their rent & the only way we're able to buy food is that she gets food stamps which usually lasts for about two weeks of the month. The only way we afford all her medical costs is that she is on medicaid, which pays for most things. If it weren't for all the assistance, we would be homeless. If it weren't for my mom having a stroke in '01 & her needing me to take care of her since then, my mom very well may have kicked me out years ago for not working or anything.

Re: How Do You Afford Not Going Out And Working?
At the moment I'm selling my stuff by internet, I think my bedroom will be empty pretty soon, time will tell. I wanted to go out and look for a job, but the thing is that when I go out, yes, I look for a job and spend my money on buses, CVs and all of that. But I also spend more money drinking since I feel so afraid and stressed. So I think I'll finish in an empty room and without any job. Just difficult.
