How does your body react to social anxiety?
Do you get shaky hands, is it hard for you to speak? I get really cold and sometimes shaky, and sometimes gassy which makes me even more anxious

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
All my reactions are internal, which makes hiding it easy but it's not much fun. I've got Crohn's disease, and that just seems to be aggravated by nervousness - sweats, gut cramps and being stuck on the toilet! Yeahhh...

Yeah, the gut cramps are the worst for me...every time I get nervous my intestines start gurgling away and then I have to escape.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
The worst physical symptom is the trembling. It's very visible to everyone, and it just makes me more nervous. My anxiety has gotten so bad that I had a hard time breathing -- of course, that was all in my head, but my head was telling my body I wasn't getting enough air. Again, this only makes me more nervous. Since I've been practicing breathing exercises, I no longer get the "short of breath" symptom though. Most of you have probably tried this, or are practicing it now but here's a link anyway. http://www.holisticonline.com/Remedies/ ... athing.htm

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I actually have very few symptoms that are visible to others. I mean, if they knew what to look for sure, but most people don't seem to able to read me. All too often I get told "but you don't seem like you're afraid!". Oh, trust me, I'm scared. It's actually a bit annoying, since people take it to mean my anxiety can't be that bad, since it doesn't really show. As for my physical symptoms, there's shortness of breath, painful tightness of the chest area, increased need to use the toilet, and I suppose cold sweatty hands. The physical pain is the most disturbing to me.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
Motor tic: I tremble, most noticeably in my hands, but it is a whole-body reaction. I've also noticed that my co-ordination seems to get poorer, I have a harder time grabbing at things, for example. I may reach for a cup, but knock something else over in the process of doing so.
Fidgitiveness. I'm pretty fidgety as is, but there is a noticeable increase once I get nervous. I have "stims", which are essentially repetitive motor mannerisms/movements, and these are aggravated by anxiety. It is also very hard for me me to remain seating at this point, if I am expected to do so.
I also get that tightness in my chest, increased heart rate, and that gassy/upset feeling in my stomach that you all describe. That seems to be common...
My voice tone gets softer and I find it impossible to hold eye contact with people for more than a few seconds.
... I think that about covers it...

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I get really fidgety, along with the sweats and nervous tics. And if i have to talk when i'm like that.. my voice gets very choppy and sometimes nothing comes out at all. If I don't do something about this, then it comes down to a panic attack, where i must remove myself from that situation or else i pretty much explode which is not fun

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I already have a little bit of a speech problem but when I get anxious it becomes extremely prominent and then i get more nervous and it goes through it's vicious cycle. I'll start sweating and can't hold i contact and shake. Overall it's very noticeable when i get anxious but i have been getting better at hiding the symptoms.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has stomach problems when they get nervous.

I stutter here and there, and have difficulty expressing myself...it's like I can't even think of the words I want to say sometimes.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I'm rather different. I don't in general have social anxiety. But if things are difficult, I sweat. No, I rain. Mostly down the back of my head. This happens when trying to talk with people with poor English, or worse, in German. It's as if my brain overheats from handling the language. And that's from handling ordinary things that wouldn't usually be any difficulty for me.
The situations where I find myself clueless about what's expected, or what someone's intentions are, or I feel otherwise harassed, my legs take over, and I exit. I may try to communicate something, in order to retain some element of grace, but my legs carry me away. It is not likely I'll return to a place/situation where this has happened, but sometimes I do. It's difficult, but I have to control myself carefully, because I'm pumped with adrenalin when this happens, and I can't judge my strength. I may break things unintentionally in my attempt at escape. Door knobs have come off, and doors have come off hinges, in such situations.
It's really weird, because in real emergencies, I go cool, even cold, and calculating. My mind goes into warp speed, and I either know what to do, or realize I don't know, and find out who does. I can even deal with people, rather well. My usual hangups and issues are set aside.
One thing I have figured out, I have some kind of claustrophobia thing going on. Only mine often comes in under the radar, as it were, and instead of a need to leave, I get cranky, or short tempered. I may not even realize that this is happening until after I am out of the situation, as it can be subtle. It's doesn't need to be about tight spaces, and not all tight spaces make problems. Elevators are generally no problem! I only actually realized I had this when I was running a Bed & Breakfast Inn, and I found I always got short tempered if I was helping make one specific bed, and was on the side where the cealing was lowest. And that was in my own home! Crowded grocery stores, when I have a cart, can induce this problem, but I usually just try to finish too quickly, and miss things. The perfect storm, as it were, is when I feel harassed and claustrophobic at the same time.
All that adrenalin is not pleasant. I hate feeling that way! I make effort to avoid any chance of feeling that way. I've quit jobs and school over this, although sometimes, it's because such a situation has caused me to make an ass of myself, and I have very low tolerance to that shame.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
i tremble too, all day long because my anxiety is kind of an all day thing. i also get extremely nauseas, and can be physically ill if pushed too far. i remember the first day of school each year being the very worst. i would have to get up extra early, and skip breakfast, because i would spend most of the morning overcome by dry heaves. i can't wear jewelry, especially necklaces, or shirts with tight collars, or have anything in direct contact with my neck or throat, it makes me gag or even dry heave. also, i have a really hard time making or keeping eye contact. and i tend to blurt out things i don't mean, or don't even make sense.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
After debating in class I has a review meeting on a school project, and it was awful. By the end I was taking very deep breaths at a somewhat fast pace and seriously trying to keep myself from running out of the meeting. Made it through, though, and currently I feel exhausted. Reeling, perhaps. Not a good feeling.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
My face will begin to flush and my body will start trembling uncontrollably. Most the times my palms will become real sweaty. Sometimes I will hyperventilate. When this happens I start to cry. It can be very embarrassing. The crying part is probably the worst.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
My hands get numb first, then the cotton mouth hits. My scalp starts to tingle and my stomach muscles clench.
Facially, I've been told that I look anywhere from aloof to hostile. I guess I put on any expression to prevent someone from knowing how terrified I feel.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I'm pretty much the same as you guys, it's mostly the shaking, hyperventilating. I just feel like I'm really angry, for my own safety and the safety of others I have to go somewhere secluded before I do anything impulsive.
If it gets really bad I have an attack and don't remember it afterwards, it's strange but i've been told I just start laughing hysterically or sometimes I just pass out. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia, so mostly I'm very scrambled, I don't really know what's going on myself.

The same here, and my ribs shake, and people can notice it. It's embarrasing. It's very hard for me to speak, or even breathe, I feel an urge to leave the place, I usually take some Diazepam pills before face some people, if they are more than three and I have to give a speech it's really owful.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I had some cosmetic surgery a few times over the last years and those occasions have been the only times I even left my house in all that time. The traveling, stress, meeting with people and overall ordeal of going through anesthesia and surgery always made me dizzy and confused for a few days. The last time I did this, earlier this fall, I got panic anxiety symptomes afterwards and felt as if I would have a heart attack or had some serious disease. It really exhausted me completely.

I'd get reeeeeally hypervigilant, despite the fact that it's difficult to become more hypervigilant than I am by nature, and I'd shake like a leaf. >.<; I'd cry sometimes and usually just end up leaving, then running for my Ativan.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
Hmm let's see, I do have some problems, but I can hide most well. In order of how much it bothers me:
Trembling hands: it's the worst when I have to hold something fragile or something that would cause a mess if I drop it, while other people are looking at me or can see me, because then I'm really conscious of it. Valerian pills help reduce this and some other reactions (as do alcohol and weed, but those are obviously not always an option to use). I also get this even when I'm not particularly socially anxious, but just excited/nervous for something. It's been getting worse the last few years, in fact I don't even remember it being a problem until the first time I recovered from being a shut-in.
Stomach cramps: fortunately this isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. I have a hikki friend who avoids any crowd because he gets it so badly (+ flatulence which I thankfully never had). I used to be diagnosed with IBS too (but it's pretty much just a catch all for unexplainable gastro problems), I'm quite sure it's a direct result of stress.
Cracking voice: usually this happens when I have to start a conversation. The first word comes out very soft and barely coherent. It's fine after that though (except for having a slightly dry mouth that makes me sound monotone).
Increased heartrate: especially a problem when I'm near strangers, usually not so much a problem when near people I know.

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I talk alot of crap in a short amount of time that doesnt even make sense in any way i have the feeling that people think of me as a freak when im nervous infront of them, beginning to stumble in a weird way sometimes,my heart is shaking in a sick way, sometimes i forget to breath when i talk (mostly when i have to talk more than just 10 words in a row) this loser thinking of myself, that everything/everyone around me is (or at least seems)better and more successful than i am gives me the rest sometimes but it all depends on the situation, there are times when i dont have problems talking with people and there are times when i cant even look at them

Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I don't shake. I tense up instead. So aside from the excessive blushing there really its hard for people to tell I have anxiety issues. Especially since I can hold conversations while looking someone in the eyes. Or shake hands/introduce myself. The panic attacks, fainting, throwing up, hypervigilance, trembling comes immediately after the fact. In retrospect I suppose this only means I bail out people notice these problems.
