I get post-traumatic panic anxiety symptomes. Usually feeling like I can't breathe and as if I'm going to die. It comes after I've been under a lot of stress.

I always appear so calm in social situations, people would never guess I was incredibly anxious (which I guess is a good thing) - but my heart rate increases, butterflies, I get a stomach ache and sometimes I sweat.

Oh suedehead I wish I had your (external) composure when dealing with social situations.

I start to get butterflies, heart starts racing. I also get really hot and my hands get sweaty, and my face goes really red too :thumbsdown which makes it so obvious.
If I think people are looking at me (like on the train, in a waiting room) I start to find it really hard to breathe and feel stuffy and my vision goes funny. :wacko
If I'm having a conversation I'll start to get flustered and say stupid things to try and cover the fact that I'm uncomfortable, which only makes it worse. I'll also avoid eye contact with the other person and look at things over their shoulder, or pretend I see something interesting across the street. My mouth also gets dry sometimes which sucks when I'm having to do a speech.
If I have to eat with other people (dinner at a friend's house or whatever) I lose my appetite completely from nervousness, which can then also turn into nausea from the smell of the food.
This doesn't go down too well with the hosts who think I hate their food or something.

Yeah this anxiety thing fucking sucks. :sad

I'm like Suedehead. Personally, i'd rather be ok on the inside than the outside though - but maybe that's a grass is greener thing.

Externally, I seem to show some kind of composure and it may not seem apparent that I have any anxiety at all. However, when it does get quite bad I notice the following:

Incoherent sentences - I just begin fumbling for words and most of my sentences start to make no sense. Embarrasing.
Increased heart rate - not bad but noticeable.
Lack of appetite - this can get really bad at times. Tried to eat a madeira cake at a staff meeting and it was like eating gravel. It looked so appealing but in that situation I found it impossible to eat.
Nervous indigestion - this I hate the most. Especially in situations where it's really quiet and, out the blue, my stomach starts gurgling like crazy. I've walked out of exams because of it on some occasions. A stupid thing to do, but I really just wanted to get away.
:no

Post Re: How does your body react to social anxiety?
I got back from a social group that the Mental Health Clinic has. It was just people sitting around talking in front of a television. It is something that I have the most difficulty with because I feel as though I must socialise. The counselor said I don't have to say anything at all if I don't want to. I couldn't stay for very long and I had to leave. When I got home I started getting a lot of anxiety and feelings of confusion. Feelings as though everyone hates me. In reality everyone there were very supportive, especially the social worker there. I'm afraid to go back there. However, if I'm going to get through this I need to keep going. No one is forcing me to go to these groups except me. I am determined to learn how to deal with this.
