I want Mother buy me a E book. It was cool, as you can throw the same files with a computer that you want, So that was a different format support. No protection for the device was not. Very expensive, wait for better technology to improve for several years. The most likely buy a possible future. Vision is bad, if this device was created for me. Manga would like to read it. Books too. In this year began to read from the computer's many manga. I am interested in this, perhaps ever come up with something better.

I just got one for Christmas. It doesn't have that great of a screen (It's LCD and I'm sure that E-ink screens, which is what Kindles and many other popular E-readers have, look better) and its storage capacity isn't high (though it can be expanded on with a memory card), but I'm loving it. I'm just glad that it has a very long battery life and that it has support for many different E-book formats.

My E-reader is the one in front of the Kindle (the Kindle is the one with the keypad):

I recently bought a kindle, at first i thought I wouldn't like very much and I'd only use it to read books that are either rare/out of print or too expensive. But after a few minutes of using it I loved it. I got the one without the back light so it looks just like a real book. I've been using it pretty much non stop for the past week and it still has full battery. Even though there aren't many options in the kindle store the books are very cheap. (I just downloaded the complete works of H.P. Lovecraft for $0.99) Also you can upload your own .PDFs and text files so if you can't find the book you're looking for you can just upload it from your computer.

Sadly, I've been having trouble finding certain rare titles . . . and I happen to know the best places to look for E-books. Looks like there are a few out-of-print titles that I'll probably end up having to buy. No!!! :(

You're lucky you didn't pay any more than a dollar for that E-book as you can (legally) download all the works of H. P. Lovecraft, from here, for free.

When looking for very old titles, your first stop should be Project Gutenberg.

As much as I try, but I can't see any real advantage they might have.
The very idea that it might break would make me fearful to even use it.

If I had the money and space to store them, I'd always prefer the feeling of physical pages between my fingers.
In the result, I'd rather buy another monitor and read on this. :unsure

I've come to prefer my Kindle. Convenience. I can lay in bed and read without having to turn the light on, using the light on my case. I can take shittons of books with me somewhere when I'm not sure what I want to read. It's easier and more comfortable to hold than normal books. I can download books on a whim, and not have to wait for a physical book to come in the mail. Also, internet access in a pinch, but none of the constant temptation because the browser is a PITA to use.

Most importantly, I can read porn in public with nobody noticing.

  • They save you lots of money (even if you're not the type to pirate stuff, they'll save you cash. E-books typically cost $1-$5 while hardback volumes tend to be about $20 and paperbacks about $8-$10).
  • They're light and portable (I'm fond of omnibuses but hate how they tend to be unwieldy; it's nice to read thick volumes on your E-reader without having to hold a huge, unwieldy book in your hands).
  • You don't have to wait for your books to arrive in the mail (within minutes you can find an E-book, stick it on your E-reader and start reading it).

Mostly what Rezu said, but whatever . . .

I wouldn't worry much. Most electronics that don't have moving parts inside of them will last you a lifetime . . . granted you take good care of them (I'll assume you're not careless). But, from what I've heard, Kindles and most other popular E-readers can take quite a beating.

After some years you'd perhaps have to (or, at least want to) replace the battery in your E-reader. But I'm sure you'd replace your E-reader with a newer, more advanced E-reader before your battery would become completely useless.

No problem.

Oh, I see.. apparently I might have judged a bit too fast. Admittedly I actually never really looked into this.
While I hold some appreciation for tech gadgets, I'm also always a bit distrustful when it comes to new technology I never heard of before. .

Now that's good news. Dunno where from I got the idea/fear they might constantly run out of power, leaving the ambitious reader frustrated..
The general impression I got out of this topic doesn't seem to be so negative also..

In any case, thanks for the input everyone. :)
My monetary plans are currently a bit sharp fashioned, but I guess it's worth to conduct some real research on the matter for possible further appliance.

I'd like to change my answer into: Nope, but I reconsider.

Post Re: Do any of you have an E-book reader?
Once I've gotten a bit of use out of this E-reader I got for Christmas, I want to replace it with a more advanced E-reader.

Right now I've narrowed down my choices to the Nook Touch and the Kindle 3.

Here's a spec comparison between the two devices:

Image

The Nook's extremely long-lasting battery life and expandable memory really appeals to me. It doesn't support many formats, but I don't mind converting E-books using Calibre. It also doesn't have a built-in MP3 player (which also doesn't matter to me as I'd rather use a device made primarily for listening to music for that instead). The only things that would maybe prevent me from getting the Nook would be its lack of 3G and how it, as far as I know, doesn't have a good lighted case for it -- things I'd really like to have.

Has anyone here used both the Kindle 3 and Nook Touch? If so, which did you prefer?

Why are you comparing Kindle 3 to the Nook Touch instead of the Kindle Touch? Kindle Touch has the same battery life as the Nook Touch, if I'm not mistaken.

I'd say just keep using this e-reader until the next gens of Kindles come out, and then compare with what's on the market then.

It's because I'd rather get a Kindle 3 than a Kindle Touch. The main reason for this may seem silly to you. It's mostly because the Kindle 3 supposedly has a vastly superior lighted case for it than what's available for the Kindle Touch.

I don't care much about "touch" functionality and, other than the touch functionality, the Kindle Touch and the Kindle 3 are pretty much identical when it comes to specs. Of course there are a few differences between the devices, but they aren't important to me. The Kindle Touch is slightly smaller than the Kindle 3, it has touch functionality (duh), and its operating system is slightly different from that of the one in the Kindle 3. Other than that, they seem identical.

The Nook Touch, on the other hand, is quite an upgrade from the original Nook. The "touch" functionality isn't its primary upgrade. It has a new, faster processor and has support for 32 GB MicroSD cards (the previous Nook could support a maximum of 16 GB MicroSD cards), to mention a couple things. It's speedier than the Kindle and holds more space -- things which make me think I'd maybe prefer it to the Kindle. However, good specs don't necessarily = good product. Ideally, I'd like to test both devices out to see which "feels" better to me. But, unfortunately, I won't get a chance to do this. For one, the Nook can't be bought in Canada which means that the only way for me to "test it out" would be for me to buy it off Ebay.

But perhaps someone here who's tested out both devices can tell me which device they prefer. I somehow doubt that anyone here has used both, but if they haven't it doesn't really matter. I'll probably be signing up to E-book/E-reader-related forums soon to see how people think the Kindle 3 compares to the Nook Touch.

According to Amazon, it lasts as long as the Kindle 3 battery.

Looks like you're mistaken.

Do you know when the next E-ink Kindle will come out?

If it's gonna be more than a year, I don't know if I can wait that long. lol

They seem to do yearly releases. I know they're doing a new Kindle Fire this year, so it's likely they'll roll out improvements on the current Kindles.

My area B&N recently destroyed their store by putting an enormous and utterly obnoxious fucking Nook exhibit in the middle of the store, complete with beanbag chairs and fucktarded help specialists, so if I'm there I'll try out a Nook Touch. B&N is a scumbag company, though. I can't stand them, and I can't wait until they go bankrupt, so my opinion is hardly unbiased. :P

Post Re: Do any of you have an E-book reader?
Aillas, I used to have a K3 Keyboard and returned it for the Nook Touch. The Nook by far has the best ergonomics. It is a little wider so it is easier to hold in your handle, it has buttons for page turning and the touch interface is much better than the slow to use keypad. The Kindle on the other hand is harder to hold as you cannot let your palm rest on the keyboard and you can often accidentally hit the page turn buttons. Another big plus for the Nook Touch is that it can be rooted so you can install Android apps. I have not done it yet, but in other forums people have told me it is a win-win scenario to root it. A big advantage of the touch devices is that you can much more easily use the dictionary to look up words by touch instead of scrolling the arrow keys.

Also don't register on e-reader forums like Mobileread unless you REALLY have to. The people there have serious mental health issues. They seem to vaunt the psychopathic homo-consumens that feel an unrealistic and artificial need to own every e-reader. There is not really much about e-readers and e-books to discuss, yet many people there have thousands or tens of thousands of posts.
