Has anyone read any of his stories? Talk about weird tales, alright.

Read an omnibus of the author in 2006. Can't remember the book title or the titles of the stories.
Interesting ones:
Magician raised monsters in dungeon inside pits in the floor. (Britain?)
Lunar city, inhabitants that looked like white-colored toads.
Places in China (Liaoning?) and Mongolia whose inhabitants practised black magic. Where the priest in yellow robes and mask dwelt.
Discovery of prehistoric city once inhabited by giant creatures. Inside is a library. The books on the shelves are massive.
A race of giant aliens shaped like cones with tentacles on their heads who use time travel to interact with other alien races.
A young Englishman commits suicide after finding out the truth behind his parentage. ("The White Ape")

Yep. Plenty of good old creepy stories.

One of my favorites is the story "The Shadow over Innsmouth". Fits my town quite well. Except for one little detail. =P

I've been reading The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories off and on since I got it a few months ago. I actually started reading it again recently and the last one I finished was "The Colour Out of Space." Which was easily the most effective and creepy story so far (as much as I was excited to read Call of Cthulhu). I also purchased the second book in the series a couple of weeks ago and will start reading that after I finish this one.

I just recently started reading his stuff. It's really, really good. Cosmic horror in the truest sense of the word. Any of his stories that have to do with space, cults or dreaming are my favorites. It can really get me thinking.

And it provides good reason not to be mean to cats. =D

I've read a few stories. If you like H.P., you should check out Poppy Z. Brite. Longer stories, but entertaining/scary none the less.

Lovecraft was a genius. He wrote some of the most classic horror stories of all time. The way he can control emotion and creat a genuine sense of fear out of some really ridicolous scenarios is really impressive. Geat writer.

My favourite of his stories is Nyarlathotep. I just love the imagery, but more than that, I love how the first line grabs ahold of you.

'Nyarlathotep... the crawling chaos... I am the last... I will tell the audient void...'

I prefer Dagon better as an example of his 'ancient one' mythos than the more well known Call of Cthulu. I found the latter a little confusing and stiff to follow if i recall correctly. Lovecraft's best attribute is easily the effortless way he strings his broad vocabulary into sentences both emotive and with a natural timbre. It always makes me feel as though I'm glimpsing through the eyes of a really considered wisdom.

No prizes for guessing where the idea for this username came from!

I also like Herbert West, and I sort of agree with this:

Quote:

This is probably why most of his characters are professors, or learned men.

I think I've probably read everything he ever wrote. I love the old American pulp fiction writers and Lovecraft is probably the best -- along with Robert Howard.

Anyone read his short story called 'The Outsider'? It is one of my favorites and I think many people on this forum could find some meaning in it.

Yeah, I've read that one, Jackal, and now that I think about it, it does have a very hikikomori feel to it. I'm going to have to sit down and reread it.

I'm currently reading a collection of short stories from him!

Some months ago I randomly picked out The Case of Charles Dexter Ward and really liked it. I had never read Lovecraft before because he sounded too scifi (I don't like scifi)... but since that book was so good, I had to borrow more. I don't think all of his stories have been translated, though, which is saddening :/

(Have to check out that podcast.)

Translated into what? I'd assume they've been translated into most major languages.

Finnish.

The bibliography list on Wikipedia seems to have many more works than what has been published as translated here.

Haven't read any of his stuff but want to read some of it. I want to eventually get the best of collection of H.P. Lovecraft's stories Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P. Lovecraft. There's about 1000 pages in that book; that's probably all the Lovecraft one would ever need.

Image

I want to get all of the Gollancz "black books" that have been coming out since 2009. So far there's The Complete Conan and Conan's Brethren by Robert E. Howard (I've been wanting to check out Robert E. Howard for a long time now), The Complete Lyonesse by Jack Vance (this is the only "black book" I own) and Necronomicon by H.P. Lovecraft.
