Post Rules, guides, & info (read this if you're a noob)
Rules

!
. No links to anything illegal.

. No "Chan" behavior.

. No porn (nudity is allowed though).

. No spam.

. Don't ask staff to make you mod, admin, or VIP.

. Try to have good manners.

. Don't use offensive avatars.

. Don't be hateful towards people.

. Don't discuss banned users (even subtle references aren't allowed).

. Don't ask staff to change your user-group or forum permissions.

. Don't ask staff to give you special treatment.

. Create threads in relevant boards.

. Don't sign up through a proxy and/or temporary email address (you'll get banned if you do).

. Don't post your email/IM address on any of the boards (if you want to share this info, put it in your profile details).

Things to know

!
. Avatars, if uploaded directly to the site, must be 20 KB or less and 200 x 300 pixels. They can be unlimited size if they're hosted on another site. I recommend using Dropbox to host your images. Just upload your images to the "Public" folder, right-click on the image you want to embed, and put the image between the IMG tags which is:
Code:
[IMG]Link to image[/IMG]

. Signatures must be 800 x 200 pixels or less.

. To use a BBCode, hover over the code you want to use. It will show you which tags to put before and after the text or URL you want to insert in between.

. You can't delete posts. If you need a post to be deleted, request a staff member to delete it for you. However, they won't always delete them for you, and they'll never bulk-delete posts for you.

. You get 15 minutes to edit posts.

Good practices

!
. When quoting a post with an image in it, hide the images with a spoiler so that the page looks cleaner
. Don't put unnecessary stuff in thread titles like multiple exclamation marks (???) or text smileys (^_^, etc.)
. Don't make thread titles in all upper-case letters
. Don't make posts in all upper-case letters
. Don't make too many posts in random colors (it can be hard to read text of certain colors)
. Don't put stars or random characters in cuss words (people here are mature enough to not get offended over "bad" words - random characters look messy)

Don't do this

!
Don't sign up to HC if you're a student or journalist asking us to answer questions about the hikikomori phenomenon. It's rude to sign up to a site out of self-interest to ask questions and leave.

If you need hikikomori-related info, use Google - you'll find all the info you need.

Reporting "problem" threads

!
Though not common, threads on HC sometimes get rather heated.

A problem thread is when a thread turns into pages upon pages of flaming which usually is irrelevant to the topic at hand. Sometimes people who do the flaming are valid in what they say in their posts, but to flame won't add anything good to this site, and I highly discourage it - it can get you banned/warned. If you encourage flaming (let's say, you create a post knowing it'll help increase the flaming rather than decrease it), it may get you warned - probably not banned, but warned.

This generally is how a problem thread occurs:

1. A person will make a somewhat controversial post (it doesn't necessarily have to be a "bad" post - just something that will make a few people touchy).
2. Someone will get upset over the post and reply (sometimes in a harsh manner; sometimes not).
3. The person who made the controversial post will usually reply in a harsh tone.
4. Everyone starts sharing their opinion in regards to the controversial post -- sometimes in a hostile tone, sometimes not -- but the comments generally are more aggressive than not, and typically are unrelated to the topic at hand.

If you see a thread turning into flaming, do the right thing and report it by copying the thread's URL and sending it to staff via the PM system. If you only see a single controversial post, report the single post by using the "Report" button.

Almost more importantly than the above is that, if you see flaming, you yourself should try to break it up. If you don't have the courage to, simply do the above and PM a staff member.

Thanks.

HC has various BBCodes that you may not know the purpose of. I'm making this guide so you know what they do, and how to use them. I'll only list BBCodes who's function isn't entirely obvious.

You can click on a BBCode to see the proper tags you need in order to use them. If you want, you can try to memorize the tags, but it's usually quicker to click on a code rather than typing it out.

Anyway, onto the guide...

Background - This BBCode lets you change the background color behind text.

The legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, where The Beatles recorded for seven years, are up for sale in an attempt by EMI Group to help dig its way out of debt, a report says Tuesday morning.

The Financial Times in London reported the sale, saying it could raise tens of millions of dollars. EMI spokeswoman Jeanne Meyer declined comment.

“The brand is worth more than the building,” the FT quoted a media lawyer as saying.

The building encompasses three studios, a penthouse and a private restaurant in the exclusive St. John’s Wood neighbourhood of London.

Turned into “the world’s first custom-built recording studios” by EMI in 1929, Abbey Road and its storied history covers not just The Beatles, but Sir Edward Elgar’s 1931 recording of Land of Hope and Glory, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and the scores of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies.Just this month the studios opened an online store for merchandise. Its website includes links to listen to artists recording at Abbey Road, including Canadians Alanis Morissette, Martha Wainwright and Diana Krall.

“What you have is a very expensive piece of heritage,” the media lawyer told the FT. “If an artist goes to a label and asks to record at Abbey Road they will be met with maniacal laughter.”

EMI, the world’s fourth biggest music group, was taken over in a leveraged buyout in 2007 by Terra Firma Capital Partners Ltd., which needs $200 million from investors before June to avoid defaulting on a Citigroup loan.
In recent years, large studios have suffered as artists turned to digital recordings and computers.

Number 3 Abbey Road, which gave The Beatles famous album its name, includes three studios. The first, its website says, “can easily accommodate a 110-piece orchestra and a 100-piece choir simultaneously. The size makes it a very attractive venue for live music.”

Studio Two “is probably the most famous studio in the world,” with room for 55 musicians.

Studio Three engineers created “some of the very first 5.1 surround mixes for the Beatles Anthology, U2, and Coldplay.”

Also part of the former 1831 villa are The Penthouse, a private restaurant, and a garden “where our guests can relax and recharge their creative batteries."

WINNIPEG — It's an unintended consequence of the fight against H1N1.

Police and social advocates in Manitoba say addicts are abusing hand sanitizer in the wake of the flu virus, when the product flooded store shelves and public buildings last year, by consuming it.

Winnipeg Police Service Sgt. Darrall Randy Kotchon said his officers have found littered sanitizer debris across the city and have received reports indicating the abuse.

Experts say people add salt to the hand sanitizer, which separates pure alcohol from the product with potentially dangerous results.

At one of Winnipeg's main shelters, workers have confiscated sanitizer bottles and stopped leaving salt out on tables; people have to ask to use it.

"It's similar to individuals who are (consuming) . . . mouthwash, or they're using hairspray," said Kotchon.

Reports of hand-sanitizer abuse began last year when officers encountered the issue on patrol and from resident reports. Business owners need to be particularly vigilant, he said.

"With the H1N1, it's something that more people are buying, more people are using, you're seeing them more in most every store (and) bank," said Kotchon. "What unfortunately has happened is people are realizing this is something they can use to get drunk and intoxicated on."

Brian Bechtel, executive director of the Main Street Project, said his shelter staff confiscated four jugs of sanitizer this week alone.

Some clients steal sanitizer from public places, he said, though staff is now seizing more consumer bottles. "It seems like it's almost daily now," said Bechtel.

Staff decided to use non-alcoholic sanitizer at the shelter to discourage misuse.

Since H1N1's emergence last April, many public facilities are using sanitizer to combat the spread of germs.

Potential misuse of the product gained prominence last June, when a Senate committee heard federal health officials discuss whether to send hand sanitizer to some remote First Nations battling the H1N1 flu. An official said alcohol in the sanitizer was a concern.

Kotchon said no charges have yet been laid against shop owners for selling hand sanitizers as an intoxicating product.

Under the province's Liquor Control Act, an individual found guilty of selling a non-potable intoxicating substance as a beverage can receive a fine of $2,000 to $20,000 or up to six months in jail.

If you have questions about any other BBCode, let me know.

This guide shows you how to configure XChat, an app that can be used for speaking to people in the HC chat-room.

Before you start reading the guide, I'll let you know that XChat gives you benefits over using the chat-box. One of the best advantages is that you can be logged into the HC chat-room all the time without having to visit the HC site. When you're finished chatting in the channel, you can leave XChat running in your system tray and set your status to away.

IRC clients are sort of like instant messengers. They're mainly used for engaging in group discussion (chat-rooms), but can also be used to query single people.

With XChat, there's higher security, more features, better customizability, scripts can be used, among other things.

If you plan on using the chat-room, or if you currently use it, upgrade to XChat or another IRC client. Me and Quasar highly recommend it.

Here's the guide.
