The Arkansas blackbirds and 8 other mysterious mass animal deaths

After 5,000 redwing blackbirds fell dead in Arkansas, other fish, birds, and even crabs have been dying en masse across the globe — sparking apocalyptic fears

The mysterious "rain" of 5,000 dead blackbirds that filled fields near Beebe, Arkansas, on New Year's Day — and inspired doomsday speculation — was likely triggered by ear-splitting fireworks, say officials. The explosions apparently startled the birds, which have poor night vision, causing them to fly fatally into buildings and trees. Still, say gloomy prognosticators, 8 other incidences of strange animal deaths have occurred over the last few days:

1. 100,000 fish in Arkansas
A tugboat operator discovered hundreds of thousands of dead drum fish blanketing the Arkansas River on Dec. 30. While authorities say fish kills occur every year, it's odd that only one species was affected in this one. "If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish," said Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Officials suspect disease is to blame.

2. 100 tons of fish in Brazil
Brazilian news site Parana-Online reported that up to 100 tons of dead fish have washed ashore in the coastal towns of South America since Dec. 30, panicking the fishing community and leaving wildlife experts puzzled. The region's coordinator of Civil Defense, suggesting that an environmental imbalance or leaked chemicals might be the culprit, has discouraged Brazilians from ingesting the fish.

3. Millions of fish in Maryland
Cold water may also be the cause of death for an estimated 2 million fish in Chesapeake Bay. The fish, which normally migrate to warmer waters this time of year, began washing ashore last week. The Maryland Department of the Environment has admitted it's puzzled.

4. 500 birds in Louisiana
Hundreds of blackbird carcasses littered a quarter-mile stretch of road in Labarra, La., on Jan. 3 after they inexplicably fell from the sky. Authorities speculate that the birds may have hit power lines or buildings. State Wildlife Veterinarian Jim LaCour is not feeling apocalyptic, noting that there have been 16 similar mass blackbird deaths in the past 30 years: "It's not terribly unusual." (Watch a local report about the dead birds)

5. "A carpet" of snapper fish in New Zealand
Beachgoers at Little Bay and Waikawau Bay in New Zealand found "a carpet" of dead snapper floating in the water on Jan. 4, many of which were missing their eyes. The New Zealand Department of Conservation speculates that the fish starved because of bad weather conditions.

6. Hundreds of starlings and robins in Kentucky
A woman in Gilbertsville, Ky., reportedly woke to find dozens of dead birds in her yard on Jan. 4. "I've never seen anything like it," the woman said. "It's really creepy." A spokesman for the local Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that hundreds of birds, including grackles, starlings, and robins, had been found "scattered around" the town. The birds did not appear to have been poisoned or diseased, and show no signs of trauma.

7. 40,000 crabs in England
Thousands of velvet swimming crabs washed up dead on the shores of Kent in Britain on Jan. 5. Experts think cold weather might be to blame, as this has been the region's coldest December in more than 100 years. "It just goes to show that all animals are affected by freezing conditions — not just us humans," noted local resident Nicholas Branson in The Daily Mail.

8. Jackdaws in Sweden
Roughly 50 birds were found dead on a residential street in the Swedish town of Falkoeping on Jan. 5. The dead jackdaws showed no visible injuries, prompting veterinary officials to speculate about poisoning or disease. The BBC reports there were no loud fireworks or storms in the area that could have startled the birds.

I think there could be a reasonable explanation for all this happening but still I find such things quite fascinating. :)

Post Re: Mysterious Mass Animal Deaths
Hearing about these deaths made me really sad--I've seen the alewives die off here nearly every summer, and it's so depressing to see all those little fish washing up on the shore by the hundreds, just wave after wave of them. I don't really want to agree with the ZOMG IT'S THE END people, but I have to admit a little superstitious part of me finds these things really disturbing whenever they happen, no matter what the cause is found out to be.

...I also am hoping this isn't another terrible animal disease. My second thought on hearing about the dead blackbirds was pretty much oh god oh god not the bird flu again oh god I'm gonna die. But that's because I'm really, really paranoid about illness. I did catch the last big "apocalyptic disease" that went floating around the world, and it made me really sick, which...er, didn't help my paranoia about pandemics.

On the other hand, I think that a short story about a town waking up to find that all the birds in the town are dead would be really frickin' awesome.

Mysterious mass animal deaths make me horny... they're just so... mysterious... and mass... :crazy

All seriousness aside though; it saddens me also how us greedy, over-advanced humans are killing loads of species off, and squeezing the world dry. I wonder if we'll live to see it truly fuck up...

It depends how you look at things though I suppose. When I think about all the horrors that life on earth brings, I think fuck this world; why should some enjoy life, and others suffer? Everything dies.

:halo

This year and next year will be really interesting. Sure to be chocked full of apocalypse paranoia. I'm excited. I was only 10 for the Y2k thing, I was naive enough to be scared about it. This time, I can bask in it.

SV22 has got it right. I also think that now that we have better technology to communicate with each other on an international scale, that these kinds of things ar being brought to light were otherwise we wouldn't know about it. Really, if you lived in America and had no technology whatsoever, at most you'd be aware of maybe 1 mass death, and that's if you lived in the state the deaths were in, so that wouldn't be too much of a big deal. However, if you figure in all the other things with technology, it could easily been misconstrued as some kidna sign of the apocalypse. Really, I think the fish things are all from the huge oil spill a few months back, since it's been able to circulate its way around the world now. As for the birds, fireworks people, fireworks.

This sort of thing isn't actually all that unusual. Animals are dying en masse all the time, and they have been for as long as there have been animals on the planet. Sometimes small changes in the weather is all it takes to set it off. Usually it doesn't get much news coverage, though. I guess these sort of stories have more appeal when a bunch of them happen at around the same time, like they did here. That way everyone gets to speculate about their stupid conspiracy theories and apocalypse scenarios.

...I admit that the cause for the mass bird deaths that I find the most comforting is the thought that they all are just running into cloaked alien ships that have appeared over our cities recently to monitor our society.

I don't know what it is, but I really am fascinated by conspiracy theories and apocalyptic predictions. I think it comes from watching too much X-Files as an impressionable child. And possibly from my father telling me all these trippy stories about shit he did for the US government off the record during the 1970's.

I find the stories he tells about running around Central Europe with a bunch of dismantled nuclear weapons waiting for the Soviets to fuck up so that they could launch the first tactical nuclear strike of the war particularly worrisome.

Well, not sure what is causing these deaths, but it is interesting. I don't think its apocalyptic or anything though. Let's not forget about the bees that were dying off not to long ago. Ended up being a combination of environmental causes. I agree with SV22, in short. the smallest change in environment can cause major changes to life. Life itself is based on small changes that domino effects.
