Don't people get that it's just a scam to add three dollars to the price of a movie ticket? The only movie I've seen in 3D in years is Avatar and most everybody agrees that's the only one that was worth it.

I've heard Tron will look pretty awesome in 3D. But I see what you mean, It's pretty much a revived gimmick. Especially with movies that haven't been shot in the 3D, but instead have been converted. Like Clash of the Titans. But if it's done right, I think it can be pretty mind blowing.

I've avoided the 3D thing completely. Not even Avatar.

Yeah, if they're shot in 3D and if there's a reason for it it can be good. Tron does sound like the kind of movie that could use it right.

i agree too, and yes, the 3d trend is getting on my nerves. i mean the film wont become better just because its 3d if the story sucks or its too short, the camera moving is bad or the actors suck. id rather have a good low budged movie than a shitty high budged one, but its completely the same with games nowdays. shitty high budget sells better

In some places, if you have the glasses already, you just pay for a normal ticket.

I agree its annoying when they shoot it in 3d just for the heck of it and end up using the cliche camera angles just to make use of the 3d, for example when someone has a bow pointed at the screen or the barrel of a gun, really makes it look cheap.

I'm also looking forward to Tron, for a few reasons, one being because Hadley from House co-stars and also because the music is done by Daft Punk who apparently make a cameo.

Late edit: Heres an interesting article if anyone is interested concerning this subject.

http://www.firstshowing.net/2010/02/21/james-cameron-explains-why-hollywood-is-screwing-up-3d/

For over a year now, I've been referring to one quote from James Cameron over and over in the many articles I've written about 3D. Cameron stated way back in 2008 at the 3D Entertainment Summit, while talking about Alice in Wonderland (which is incidentally due out in a few weeks), that it "doesn't make any sense to shoot in 2D and convert to 3D." In another new interview segment at MTV, Cameron talks about how 3D is still being used improperly in Hollywood. "But it's typical of Hollywood getting it wrong, right?" he asks. Indeed it is. But his new quotes from this are some of the best I've heard. You tell 'em Cameron!

They start by referencing the red and blue 3D from the Grammys and how big of a trend 3D has become.

"So there is an evolution, people are now starting to not accept inferior forms [of 3D], which is good. But it's typical of Hollywood getting it wrong, right? We do a film that's natively authored in 3D, shot in 3D, so they assume from the success of that, that they can just turn movies into 3D in 8 weeks… and that's going to work somehow."

Cameron was then asked if he's optimistic about Clash of the Titans and goes on to say that he has no hope.

"But it's just not the way to do it, if you want to make a movie in 3D, make the movie in 3D! And by the way, it should be a filmmaker driven process, not a studio driven process. I've been telling filmmakers for the last five years, [there's] this whole new way to paint, a whole new set of colors, and they've all kind of hung back. Now it's getting crammed down from above, and people are getting told to make movies in 3D, and it should've been the other way around, they should've been banging on the doors of the studio saying, 'I want to make a movie in 3D, let me do it!' And it didn't happen."

This is why I love James Cameron. Everything this guy says is just solid gold. I love it, this is exactly what I believe about 3D, too. If only Hollywood (and filmmakers) would've been smarter from the start about 3D, it wouldn't have been ruined by this point, and we could still be appreciating it in proper doses. Not to say we can't appreciate great 3D movies like Avatar and Coraline, but it's now become this annoying trend in Hollywood to convert everything to 3D. But the problem is really what Cameron is saying - they're all trying to convert it to 3D after the fact. Why don't they shoot in 3D from the start? That's how it should be done.

If you've been reading this site since we published that quote back in 2008, you've probably heard me gripe about 3D more than enough over the last few years. But every time I see a new quote like this, I just have to feature it, because it'll help everyone understand what needs to be done for 3D to get on the right track. We got a taste of how great 3D can be with Avatar, but Hollywood and the studios need to learn that converting movies like Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood to 3D in post-production doesn't mean it'll look any good. As Cameron says, "people are now starting to not accept inferior forms [of 3D]." When will they learn?

The theater I go to doesn't even have 3D, so even the 3D movies are shown in 2D. But I saw something on TV a couple weeks ago which was saying that in coming years, all movies will be in 3D. I really hope that's not true because it's not needed for most movies, among other reasons. It will also most likely make people go to the movies less because it will be even more expensive. I'm lucky that the theater I go to is inexpensive, but most people have to pay a lot of money just to see a movie & that will make it even worse.

I hate how everyone is going to have a 3D t.v. in their home soon. For frigs sakes. I haven't even got an HD t.v. yet; not even a flat screen. I just know as soon as I get an HD everybody else will have 3D and all the movies and games and everything will be in 3D and I won't be able to play them how they're meant to be played. I can't even read the questions on Dragon Age because it's meant to be in HD. God dammit.

Doubt it. All the big players are backing 3D, there's already channels you can get in 3D on Sky. I've actually never seen anything in 3D, and I'm not that interested in it either.

I hear you, Noth. Same thing with me: no HDTV and I can't even see the words on some the games I have, let alone invest in 3D. But it's not only that for me- I just don't think its necessary (not to mention that it strains the crap out of my eyes and gives me a headache). Yes, it worked for "Avatar", I admit (even though there was one little flaw I may have only noticed: when the central character, Worthington, looked at a few pictures on a fridge or whatever they popped out in 3D. Um, to him, they're suppossed to appear flat). But just like everyone else has mentioned, its become something to profit off of more than anything else.

3D is worthless for 95% of tv. They'll basically have to completely change what tv is.

3-D makes me feel nauseous. Why the fuck are they changing it? No point unless they guarantee that I won't get sick to my stomache or get a headache while watching T.V.

Sorta ironic for me to get into topic with this since I'm majoring in Computer Animation, but I do believe that it is indeed a shame that everything is so focused on 3D nowadays...

Honestly, I think the Princess and the Frog was the last 2D movie to ever be shown in theaters. It's so sad... it's like no one cares about 2D anymore because 3D takes more hard work and is more appreciated. T.T I recently finally got 2D animation this semester starting Friday, can't wait. :idiot I got an F in intro to 3D last semester and I'm pretty down about it.. DX I hear they're even taking Computer Animation out of the school because so many students are dropping and out and switching to Visual Arts! T~T

That's a shame because I'm a major fan of 2D. I hope pixar doesn't switch over. They seem to stay true to their animations and stories.

I'm incapable of watching 3D because I only use my right eye to see. I've never been able to see 3D to it's fullest potential so I never found it as awesome as other people described. The only reason I still wear the glasses is so that I can see the images properly. Other than that, 3D gives me a migraine.

I can't wait until the fad passes over. I haven't seen Avatar for that very reasons XD

It is a cool idea, but I find it a bit of a headache too :p I didn't see Avatar, so I can't comment on how amazing that was, and I'm sure it was amazing, but I don't watch films for the special effects personally. I can appreciate them, but it's not the main feature of a film for me.
I've only seen two movies in 3D - Toy Story 3 and Tron. I can see why they'd want to have 3D for Tron I suppose, but it wasn't that wow for me (or maybe I'm just not easily imporessed?lol) At times, I'd just take off the special glasses because I was getting fed up of seeing 3D :idiot

Yeah Tron wasn't impressive. Half of it was in 2d anyway.
But it does seem like there's less talk about 3d than there was a few months ago so that's good.

The reason many theaters show 3-D movies is because any and all ticket costs go to the producer of the film, which is then paid in salaries and dues to anyone involved with the film. Most theaters get people to buy snacks as a way to make a profit, but now that it is so bad, then just offer 3-D movies, and then take the extra prices for their own profit. The producers do not have the eintitlement to own any excess profits from 3-D movies, so the theaters demand them by the bucket.

I've never seen a 3-D movie. But they annoy me.
Some movies scenes are only for the 3-D effect and disturb the course of the film. Like rollercoaster rides or slides through a tube in computer-animated films.

I haven't seen a 3D movie in the past eight or so years but I wouldn't mind seeing what all the hype is about. I don't care much about popout visuals but emphasizing the depth of the movie/game actually interests me.
The thing I'd be concerned about is what XBlacky was talking about, pertaining to how movies would have camera angles just to add in 3D effects. That way instead of a scene being shot at a certain angle to reflect a mood, or perspective, movies would follow a trend of "haeving rocks fly at yo face!" In that case give me black and white movies instead.

That being
