 It's official- I'm employed
Yep, you heard right: I got a j-o-b. Just received the confirmation call a few minutes ago. I'm going to be cooking at that physical rehab hospital some of you may have heard me mention before. Which means I am going to be less active online in general. My whole routine has now changed and I need to adjust to getting up before 6, etc. I look forward to it though; I've been there several times already as a volunteer, so I know the basics and now the day goes, etc, for the most part, so they won't have to waste time teaching me that stuff. I am happy about this accomplishment, but also nervous at the same time, despite my familiarity with it. I've never worked anywhere quite this- the employment ratio here is about 98% woman. There is another guy who works the kitchens though, he'll be there tomorrow to train me some. Biggest things I am worried about is the paper stuff we have to do, and the cash register. Many people pay on tabs, etc, and I've never dealt with anything like that before. I'm sure I'll get it with time, I've gotten this far. Anyway, just wanted to report the good news. Wish me luck everyone.

Proud of you buddy.
In that short time that my other notebook fried, I became an IRC newbie again. I'm sorry I haven't been in there more often.
I hope you enjoy working. =)

 Re: It's official- I'm employed
Thanks everyone! Hehe, no worries, I figured you had stuff going on. You'd never abandon us. Actually... I have to be there by 5am tomorrow and Sunday, day ends at 7 pm. Then I get one day off, then I go in at 8ish Tuesday, and leave at 5ish. Day off Wednesday, same as Tuesday on Thursday, then I get Friday off. But that is not my permanent schedule, I don't think. I've heard weekends aren't so bad, so maybe they won't be as tiring. We'll see.

Congrats. I'm sure things will go fine. And, you know, working with so many females won't make much of a difference. It may feel a tad awkward at first, but you'll get used to it.

 Re: It's official- I'm employed
Thanks again everyone. So, report on first two days: haven't gotten to cook much, mainly what I have done is more like food and tray prep and some baking type of stuff. Made a pie and some mousse, for example. I'll get to though, and I could if I really wanted to, but they want me to learn more of the aide side of the job right now, which there is bunches more to. Last two days, I've more or less learned how to properly set up a tray. I only made a few mistakes today and they were all pretty minor. Setting a tray may sound easy, but what makes it hard is this is a hospital and not everyone can eat the same things. We have personal menus for each patient and they can be different colors, each one indicating something different. Blue is easy- it means they don't have allergies or conditions that limit what they can eat. Some of them can still need their food bite size, frappe'd, etc, though. Then there is yellow. Yellow indicates a diabetic, their sugar intake is limited. Green is healthy heart... and I am not actually totally sure what this is yet, but they can't have sodium. Silver/gray is also a sodium limit color. We don't give these people salt, or salty foods. Renal is pink and so far the trickiest. Renal patients have kidney issues that limit what they can process. So far, they can't have sodium, most cheeses(swiss is okay), oranges, melons, tomatoes and potatoes. But then what makes it even trickier, is that some things can mix. You can have a renal diabetic, and you won't know it until you read the card; the color is a normal pink renal color. Sometimes the wrong color is given, like one i got today. It was green for healthy heart, but "Renal" was written beside it. So you have to watch and know what the abbreviations and stuff mean. I did a lot better today, not one renal-diabetic or patient that needed chopped/frappe'd food got past me. I did miss a few condiments though, possibly a tray item or two. Luckily everything is checked first. Enough about trays, I could literally go on for hours... Overall, the duties I am expected to do aren't bad.. just kinda tedious. I have to check the nurse's and doctor's stations, making sure they are stocked properly; they put snacks for patients, etc, in there. Also have to make sure silverware is rolled, dishes are a never ending battle pretty much... that's become less of my responsibility though, thankfully. Luckily we have a mega dishwasher that completes a cycle in "normal" in about a minute. A lot to the job, and a part of me wonders if i will get it all. I think I will, it'll just take time. These people have been here a lot longer than me aside from the new guy who started same day as me(but I volunteered for 4 days, so I wasn't really "new", per se, when I started), so, yeah.

 Re: It's official- I'm employed
Sounds like it was a little tough for you in the beginning. At least with the food tray things. Maybe it wasn't, but I know it'd be hard for me.
Good to hear your adjusting, pal.

Glad to hear you're employed Quasar. I remember you talking about jobs when I first joined last year. Now, hopefully we both have found employment that we can enjoy.

Ooh! I've been away for awhile so I didn't notice this. Congratulations Quasar! Seeing as you're such a nice person on HikiCulture I hope the work will be relatively hassle free and that you'll do well to get on with the people there. All the best dood!
