 Alternatives for Google
Since google is getting more and more of an espionage agency im lookin for alternatives to not support the assholes anymore. if you know good search engines with many useful results plz post them here. i just discovered "ecosia" yesterday. they use their banner-money to save the rainforest with every click, powered by bing, yahoo and WWF. the results are quite good and similar to google but not as accurate. http://ecosia.org/

Ixquick - http://eu.ixquick.com/eng/It's a meta search engine, and a good one if you care about privacy, because it doesn't record your IP address.

 Re: Alternatives for google
Ecosia sounds really good, even though I highly doubt their claim that a single click could save that much forest - but as long as they do support it, I'm in. Google is indeed getting scary and I like forests. It's a shame that it doesn't seem to have an image search tho, I have yet to find an alternative for the google img search which gives you buckets of pictures on a single page at once.

 Re: Alternatives for google
Don't get worried about Google caring about what you do online. Google has 2 billion searches a day; do you think they're preoccupied with knowing what some random German guy is doing online?
If you have nothing to worry about (i.e. - if you're not planning a terrorist attack), just continue using Google. It's by far the best search engine out there.
You should worry more about what your ISP is doing than Google.
Anyway, if you truly want to switch to another search engine, use Yahoo. It indexes a lot of stuff, though not as much as Google.

http://www.alltheweb.comhttp://search.aol.com/http://www.hotbot.comhttp://www.gigablast.comhttp://www.lycos.comhttp://dmoz.org/http://www.qango.com/I love google. It's the best search provider I've ever come across. I hate Yahoo & never get any results from Bing. Ask may by far be the worst I've come across, though. It's not as if Google's keeping track of people, just saving what they type, at the most, anyway. Like Chair said, as long as you're not planning a terrorist attack, etc. there should be no problem with what you're using. It's not as if they're sitting outside your house with binoculars or anything.

 Re: Alternatives for google
i dont fear them spying me out i fear them spying in general. they setup street cams what kind of joke is that? i dont want to be posted on youtube when falling on my face, fuckin in the bush or pissing in the garden. they are becoming money whores like microsoft its nothing cool anymore about google. one day they got enough money to do what they want like oil companies or shit like that. hate also someday terrorist attacks might be needed to cause a new revolution and bring a new era of society. i dont want to end like ppl in the vendetta movie or worse and i think its not very far from reality. if there had been no ppl killing their king in the medival age there would be no humans rights today, and we are pretty much falling back to that step by step if you ask me. and google is helping with that. i mean how do you defend yourself against slavery if you cannot make a step unnoticed. we ( the people ) have nothing to say about new laws or shit like that, we only choose the ass whos gonna do something but what he does is totally out of control, like in america. we have no weapons and if we even aint got no possibility to move freely and unnoticed we could as well be enslaved

I came across this: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/29078If you don't currently use the Firefox addon Greasemonkey, I recommend you download it, then install that script. It prevents Google from tracing anything.

 Re: Alternatives for google
Someone needs to design a minimal barebones fucking search engine like Google used to be, because they're seriously trying hard all of a sudden to royally fuck it up and cater to the idiots.
This new streaming thing is BULLLLLSHIT.

 Re: Alternatives for google
There are Firefox extensions like Stylish and Greasemonkey which can help you make it minimalistic again. You can also easily remove elements from any site, including Google, with AdBlock Plus: Element Hiding Helper. I remove all sorts of junk from sites. Lots of the popular sites I visit look nothing like they're supposed to look. Here's what Wikipedia looks like when I'm on it: That Stylish addon is essential.

 Re: Alternatives for Google
I read somewhere that Google finally got around to taking out all the auto-suggestion crap that linked to torrents/filesharing sites and whatnot. I always thought it was pretty funny how you would type in the name of an album or something and every single suggestion would be something like "The White Album torrent", "The White Album Mediafire" etc. While it lasted it sort of made piracy idiot proof . But I guess they haven't made it all that much more difficult, as the actual results haven't been censored.

 Re: Alternatives for Google
I've been using DuckDuckGo in conjunction with Google for the past while. While it could be better, it's a good, highly-customizable search engine and seems to display results more logically than Google does.

Although this thread is about alternatives, Google does have an encrypted (SSL) search now. https://encrypted.google.com/
