Post Do you "sound" depressed ?
Do you "sound" depressed? Someone once told me, when I was about 18 years old, that I sound depressed. I'm still not sure what she meant by that, but ever since then, I've been self-conscious of my voice. I've never liked it, but was never self-conscious of it til then. I'm always worried there's something wrong with it or I really do sound depressed or something else.

Have you ever been told that you sound depressed? Or do you feel that you sound depressed, yourself?

Why be self-concious about it? What's to hide about being depressed?

If your voice goes to a higher pitch and you're speaking quickly etc, chances are you're quite happy and excited. If your voice is slow and deeper, chances are you're depressed. The reason she said you sounded depressed was probably because... wait for it... you were depressed. I doubt she meant all the time.

No. My depression doesn't really manifest itself outwardly, which I'm thankful for.

No, people always tell me how I sound perfectly happy and smily and enjoyable and sociable and extroverted.

But body language wise, anyone who can read the signs of anxiety know I'm a ticking bomb whose timer ran out a long time ago. :(

It depends if I am depressed. I know what you mean about being self-conscious about your voice though, but it's not that big of a problem for me.

People say my voice is mellow, like I'm drunk/high.

Same.

My friends comment more about how other friends sound depressed. I'm never one of them.

I do have a lower register, but my voice is bright and articulate.

i've been told that before. i generally don't vary intonation much unless im doing an unnatural voice. also i never gesticulate while speaking.
so basically yeah i got self conscious of it sometimes because it either sounds very unnatural or it sounds dead.
i don't mind it sounding unnatural though, I'm rarely serious about anything I say.

Thus far I have not been told I sound depressed. I actually spent a good chunk of college making sure I did not sound depressed. I can sound depressed, but I really have to work at it.

No one has told me that I sound depressed, but I have been told I don't sound 'enthusiastic,' whatever they meant by that.
I know I can sound monotonous, especially when I'm nervous.

People tell me I sound depressed even when I'm not depressed. I tend to talk in a deep monotonous voice, even when I'm
happy, tt's something I can't really control.

I don't bother hiding how I feel. I'm going to have to learn how if I am going to be professional.

Today when I went to see a doctor, he said that I sound flat. I didn't think I was speaking in any particular way. Now I wonder if my voice always comes off like that. Maybe it's possible because something in me puts people off, and I still haven't been able to figure out what it is. Maybe it's the voice.
