Post Loneliness worse for your health
Loneliness worse for your health than smoking and obesity

Quote:
In fact, Dr. Cacoppo’s research has shown that loneliness can cause:

*an increase in your blood pressure
*an increase in your level of stress and cortisol production
*a negative impact on your immune system
*an inability to get a good nights sleep
*an increased level of depression and anxiety
*an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease
*a reduction in your will to exercise
*an increase in your cravings for comforting foods high in processed carbohydrates
*an increase in caloric consumption
*an increase in alcohol consumption
* an increase in the consumption of a variety of drugs…both legal and illegal, and…
* a feeling of sadness that feeds upon itself, causing even more isolation and an even greater sense of loneliness.

I never really considered there were any major side effects to my or anybody's lifestyle that proceeded like this. It never got that serious to a noticeable part since I'm already used to it.

Thoughts?

Humans are innately social creatures. We thrive on any form of social contact. I'm not surprised loneliness can lead to such negative health effects.

I always feel a ton better when I'm in a comfortable social setting. The worse comes out when I'm isolated and alone. Then again, I'm quite extroverted, so being lonely for me probably has more adverse effects than others.

I'm going to call this study complete speculative bullshit...PERIOD.
I rarely have contact with people, alone almost all the time.
I get sick maybe 1-2 times a year, and that only lasts a day.
My isolation only empowers my own will.

Hell, anyone who lost a job, a loved one or whatnot would go through the same set of 'symptoms'.
This guy is a fucking kook.

I'd say, most of this isn't surprising at all, given that it goes along with depression, since most (nearly all) of this are typical symptoms of this as well.

The really interesting part in my opinion:

I never thought about this so far, but upon considering it appears to make sense. In other words, it actually might have an effect on MS, even when on a rather slight basis. Interesting...

I'd have to agree with most of these. Some of them would have to depend on the person, but I'd say most of them are just logical symptoms of being a recluse. Of course your immune system will suffer if you aren't around people all the time. You need to be around people to get sick to develop antibodies. Having more time on your hands and simply boredom could lead to more caloric consumption, alcohol, etc. Depression and anxiety could be the cause of your reclusiveness, and/or vice versa -- chicken or the egg.

I don't think he ever said all lonely people suffer from every single one of these symptoms. However, he might be over exaggerating with it being worse than obesity and smoking.

Eh, you should take that sort of study with a grain of salt.

Obviously it's different for everyone. I'm sure it affects some people in that way, but certainly not all people. For myself, it's hard to say. I'm not sure that I'm all that lonely anyway. Some of the things on the list I have never experienced at all, others I experience all the time without them ever increasing.

Anyway, it's not at all surprising that it can have negative effects on your health. Any negative emotion can do that.

Ditto.

I do have many of those problems but they came about when my job cut my salary and gave me a screwed up work schedule.
So it is stress from my job.

Actually when I tried to be social I was more sick and had worse issues with sleeping than when I became reclusive.
