Here is an interesting video on the Electrical Universe Theory. In a nutshell it says stars are electric and not fission powered. That massive static electrical fields are present in space in a similar way that lightning exists in the skies.

My personal opinion is that the electricity is due to the circular motion of the planets and moons as they travel through space. Space full of particles and dust. Think rubbing a glass rod with wool, or a balloon with your hair. Remember, you need three things to generate electricity. Motion, a magnetic field, a conductor or path for the electricity to travel. Although we think of the planets as moving very slowly, in reality we are speeding at mind boggling speed in our orbit around the sun.
