 Waking Up In Pain
Hey. I figured I'd ask you guys before asking people I didn't know. Probably 9/10 mornings I wake up with upper body pain. I've never been sure if it was my back or not. It hurts around my chest cavity and shoulders. I have asthma as well. When I get out of the bed and start moving, it all goes away after about 10 minutes at the most. I want to try and narrow this down before I go spend money. I'm tired of waking up hurting. Especially since I take care of myself. What do you guys think? I think a little of it may be the mattress, but I don't think that's the main problem. I sleep on my back like you're recommended to do. A close friend suggested that I get a dehumidifier. I don't know whether it is my muscular/skeletal system or my lungs. It has to be one or the other. My sinuses are always clogged upon waking. I have to flush them out regularly. Georgia is a very humid state. Also, when I breathe in deeply, any pain or discomfort I may have had subsides. Any help is appreciated.

 Re: Waking Up In Pain
Could be a complication of the asthma... perhaps since you sleep on your back and your nasals are clogged upon waking, your experiencing a sort of obstructive sleep apnea and its putting stress on your chest muscles during sleep. Could cause the soreness... that happens to me sometimes if I sleep on my back, except I generally wake up gasping for air, which is pretty scary. Which is why I'm a side-sleeper. Just a thought, I'm really not sure. If it concerns you, you should see a doctor.

 Re: Waking Up In Pain
If its a back problem, try sleeping on your side. Even though sleeping on the back is generally the best position, everyone is different. It might be better for you to sleep on your side. Its could also be the mattress, your mattress might not be supporting your spine and as a result you are putting pressure on the back nerves, which might explain why it goes away when you get out of bed. You could also be right about humidity in which case get a dehumidifier.
It might also be a sinusitis infection, if its a normal one, treat with decongestants etc and blowing nose. If its a slightly more severe or chronic one you might need antibiotic treatments.
Hope I helped, I just sourced a load of links articles on Google.

 Re: Waking Up In Pain
I used to have that a lot, if it's in your chest area and more on the surface the position of how you sleep might be affecting your skeletal system. I fuck up my sternum when I sleep on my back, which is why I sleep on the side. The chest pain I get is similar to yours when I sleep on my chest. The nose clogged thing might be a totally different thing. Also, the bed could also be messing you up, try the floor? Whenever I'm at a hotel or another place while sleeping I always use the floor, since I don't trust the beds. Lastly, if your nose is clogged very very often it may be swollen adenoids unallowing your sinuses to drain properly, a problem I had as a child and had to get them surgically removed.
If your pain is a deeper or to the side it might be the muscles around your chest getting stressed as you sleep, which may just be the position you sleep in. When I slept on my back I always tipped my head back. When I woke up in the morning by neck/shoulder muscles were always very sore. I hope it helps!

 Re: Waking Up In Pain
That sentence I highlighted makes it sound like congestion in your lower respiratory system / pleural cavity, or possibly a tightening of the muscles in your chest. I know that humidity makes my chest muscles tense up painfully, so I assume some other people must experience this too. When you breathe deeply, do you feel your lungs clearing up? If you don't feel anything change in your lungs, it might just be tense muscles (the chest muscles tense up very readily). On the other hand, pain in the upper torso can be from just about anything. When one of your internal organs is in pain, you often feel the pain in a different part of your body because of the way your nervous system is structured. (The digestive system is an exception because it is technically external - pain in the digestive system is often experienced at its source.) All that's really clear is that it's something that happens when you're asleep and goes away when you wake up. If your muscles were sore from the bed, the pain would last instead of going away suddenly. It's hard to rule out much else. I hate to say it, but considering that the symptoms are so non-specific, it might not be a good idea to try to narrow too much.

 Re: Waking Up In Pain
As the day has went on, I've begun leaning more and more towards respiratory problems. (SoullessHuman - I had my adenoids removed as a child as well. I could barely breathe when I was born and have had many breathing issues since.) I sawed a piece of 1x4 wood to fit the width of my bed and put it under the mattress to try and elevate my head some. I also bought a new, firmer pillow today. I went to every store ever looking for dehumidifiers, but no one carries them. I'll just look online, which is probably cheaper anyway. I also was considering taking Soulless' advice and sleeping on the floor at some point. I like sleeping on extra firm surfaces the most. I gotta do something in the near future, though. Even if it is only for a few minutes, waking up in pain is shitty. I never get to enjoy waking and just stretching, yawning, rolling around, etc. It's always, like, wake up, ouch, gotta go to the bathroom, ugh don't want to move but I have to, here we go again. Thanks guys!

 Re: Waking Up In Pain
Well, I fell asleep last night on my back, but I woke up in the middle of the night. I decided to test my breathing before going back to sleep. My lungs definitely have a harder time expanding when I am on my back as opposed to my side. I used to always sleep on my side as a kid, too. So, I decided to add that in with my new pillow. Guess who woke up without his lungs hurting? Sadly, my neck still hurts, but it is always tense. I'll work on that throughout the day.
