 Calling Off
If you have a job how often do you call off? I hate it. If there was just an automated system I could talk to that would be great. I'm planning to take a mental health day Wednesday since the assholes scheduled my days off for Tuesday and Thursday this week. It's bad enough working in that place without having to come every other day.

 Re: Calling Off
I am one of those horrible people who goes to work sick. If I'm really sick, I'll go home sick after working for a few hours. I know that's a lot worse than calling in. I'm like this because I always want to work, and I can't tell if I'm too sick to work until I actually get there and start working. Next time I have a job that requires me to interact with people irl, I should make a habit of taking my temperature when I'm feeling sick and going by that; I've learned that people tend to dislike it when a co-worker comes to work sick because they fear getting infected. I tend to call in only when something else has come up that seems more important than the money I'd earn by working that day. I've called in "sick" because I had to finish writing a paper, because my dog escaped, stuff like that. I also tend to arrange days off far in advance so I can travel. I think calling in late is a lot more embarrassing. I always have some really lame-sounding reason like, "I took a wrong turn and got stuck in traffic", "I dropped an extra large bottle of Listerene on my foot and I can't walk until the swelling goes down", "I was hurrying down the stairs when I slipped and fell and crashed into a shelf full of model cars and action figures. Not only did a heavy Godzilla model hit me on the head, but a model car landed on my lip and somehow cut it and I'm waiting for the bleeding to stop."

 Re: Calling Off
I usually go in when I'm sick too. As an old boss of mine said "You don't take a day off when you're too sick to enjoy it." I realy want to use that! Our dog really did eat my sister's homework once.

 Re: Calling Off
I go in when I'm sick and get sent home by the nurse if I'm ill. Ringing in sick at our company is awful. You feel like a war criminal. When you are off ill the rumour mill starts and people gossip about you 'pulling a sickie'.

 Re: Calling Off
I wonder how I'll behave if I'm going to work one day.
When I was still in school I used every possiblity to be called sick. But school is not like work, your life depends on it. So I'm afraid I will become one of those zombies, too, because I don't want to be a burden to my colleagues. *sigh*

 Re: Calling Off
That's my motto too. The thing with the shelve really happened. And I have also had my homework eaten by a dog (my parents had me turn in the chewed up homework, stapled to a sheet of paper on which I had re-done it, so I wouldn't have to explain much).

 Re: Calling Off
I'm with alot of other people, ill go to work even when im sick. I think my boss would rather us do that, so she can guage if we really are sick. ( I know that sounds horrible, but there are alot of people who chuck sickies, especially around new years, our busiest time.) Although she is also one of those people who would make sick people work, just to cover shifts, she puts her business first like any other boss. I also get little sympathy from my family if I'm sick, so I'm amazed at people who get their mums to call in sick for them, my mum would never do something like that for me! She even made me go to school one time to get my tetanus needle when I had a really bad case of the flu, needless to say the teacher sent me straight home after I got it. I have been raised with a sort of 'Protestant work ethic' though, my whole family values physical hard work over mental work, so I have been taught to feel bad if i cant work ect.
