Post Accents/Dialects
I was reading some stuff online about accents around the US and various other countries. I thought it'd be cool if we made videos saying stuff that illustrated our unique accents. I guess we'd need to figure out something to say or talk about, but it could be a fun idea.

Oh that would be cool! I love hearing different accents.

I'd think mine was awful though, I hate hearing the sound of my own voice. Plus, alot of people hate Australian accents. Ive heard it being deascribed as being as bad as listening to someone slide their nails down a chalkboard :laugh

I have a really 'girly' voice too (or so ive been told) so i would sound something like a girly bogan :confused

i hate hearing my voice, it sounds nothing like it does in my head. also, it's hard to fathom that i have any accent at all. it that universal, though? does an australian think the same way? if i heard a voice anywhere in canada or the usa (besides extremes like the maritimes or the south, or weird esoteric ones like people from boston or brooklyn or whatever have) i wouldn't be able to place it geographically at all.. it is just normal! i am from the west coast of canada btw.

here's me reading a few lines from a book i'm reading atm (almost transparent blue by ryu murakami)

will probably hate hearing this video right after i post it......

I have a Jersey/Brooklyn accent but it's not a over the top guido type accent... I'd probably feel weird posting a video though. I hate the sound of my voice... I sound so different when I hear my voice played back on a video or recording than I sound in my head, but I guess that's pretty typical.

I don't think I'd be able to place your voice geographically if you hadn't told me you were from Canada. You do have an ever-so-slight accent, but just barely. I'll get my own video up here sometime soon. Maybe I will read from a book as well.

I'm the opposite, various accents that are foreign to me, i tend to lump together. You just sound North American to me, other than some Texan drawl (Ya'll) or a strong New York (New Yoik) accent, i'm not going to be able to pick much out of it.

But i can easily spot a Scouse, Geordie, Mackem, Yorkshire, Glaswegian, Edinburgh, Brummie, Bristolian, Cornish, Ulster or Dublin (etc.) accent.

Strange how that works out :)

I had to steal NoiseyRequiem's idea and read a passage too. I'm not good at spontaneous speaking. Which makes me hugely jealous of MidnightLight that he was able to speak so conversationally on camera (and Senmee too on her vblog). With me, it would mostly be awkward dead air as I try and think what to say next.

I think this video has a small case of my reading voice though. I sound a little bit different just talking normally but it gives you an idea of what I sound like, anyway.

Now that I listen to it, I don't sound like I've lived most of my entire life in Lancashire at all.

@Noisy Requiem
Nice voice. I really don't detect an accent of any kind.

@Reanimator
I love you accent.
You have what I would consider the stereotypical English accent.

You also have a very soothing voice.
Not to sound creepy, but if I were to be euthanized by Jack Kevorkian,
I'd want him to sound like you.

I completely forgot about giant land in SMB3, I always think about how much I hated the water world when I think of that game. I didn't think it was lame by the way, you made some good points. I think my accent is a little more neutral than most of my family. From spending so long not speaking to other people, and mostly listening to a range of different accents and not primarily those found locally.

There's loads of idioms from my hometown. Things like 'Ee by eck.' which my mother used to say quite often which is like the phrase, good lord! Speaking of my mother, I saw her for the first time in many years recently and I was suprised at her accent. As you said, the people we are surrounded by influence how we speak. I was shocked at how she would extend her a sounds. She lives in Great Yarmouth now, which is more southernly than where I live. Rather than days, it comes out more like daeze. I'm not sure if my phonetic spelling of that is very helpful. Another colloquial quirk from my birthplace is to say t' for the, or to the. For instance 'Lez go down t' pub.' Oh, and the way people say ook sounds.. like look or cook, is more like luke or cuke. And rather than there and square, it sounds like Thur and sqwur.

A few more idioms that come to mind...
Bloody Mary!
Gordon Bennett!
t'other.. instead of the other

You'd get a better idea of what I mean just listening to Fred Dibnah for a minute.

I don't sound the slightest bit like him.

Decided to give this a try since I have nothing better to do. I sound and look tired so I apologize for the appearance.
My voice is blah. And I don't think I have any type of accent. I just sound like some generic American girl.

Reading a passage from Anne Rice's The Vampire Armand (which is an amazing novel).

If your voice was a little more emotionless it would remind me of the type of easy to understand accent you find on SatNav systems and answering machines. I don't think you'll ever run into that problem where people have trouble following you because of the inflections of your accent.

Oh yeah, I've been told that I should be a receptionist or something for companies since I don't have a huge issue with people not understanding me. Too bad I don't like talking to people over the phone, hah.
