Just crap on TV these days
I think the last time I followed and enjoyed a tv-series was over 10 years ago in the 90's. X-files and Star Trek Voyager. I love darker sci-fi and quiet conversations in dimly lit environments. Dunno what happened since then, nothing can spark my interest now.
I tried watching Lost, True Blood etc and loads of other series but couldn't get through more than a couple of episodes. I loathe what's on tv these days. Seriously. What happened? Did TV change or did I change? I can't honestly think of anything good on tv the past 10 years.

Have you tried Fringe? It's similar to X-Files. Also Caprica is pretty dark. Stargate Universe is pretty dark too though the rest of Stargate isn't but if you liked Voyager you may like it.

I don't watch TV nowadays. I'll listen to a show that's on but I never follow a show. My cable box is rarely ever on.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
I watched an episode of Fringe which was on tv the other night, and I was disappointed. It felt more like Smallville trying to be X-files than a remotely worthy successor to the real X-files. It wasn't dark, it wasn't cryptic, introverted or with that slightly depressing undertone I like so much.

There is a few good shows i like on tv at the moment: House, Criminal Minds, Heroes (when i actually get around to watching it), Supernatural is not bad either. Not really any others im interested in, apart from Voyager, Enterprise and TNG and DS9 re-runs :p.

I actually watched House a few times, and kind of liked it. I forgot about that one.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
The TV audience has definitely changed. People are looking more for edgy scandalous plots with the thrilling twist rather than a thoroughly decent plot with complex characters and intricate storyline. That just takes too much work. Besides, sex and blood is a lot easier to sell. Most of the series I see now has some kind of shock factor that keeps your attention whether you want it to or not. Sparkling vampires, rich teen drama gone criminal, police vs gangs, etc etc. There's nothing wrong with it, though it lacks substance at times. I do enjoy some recent series from the 21st century. They're all on AMC or that other expensive channel (HBO? can't remember). The series not on your usual cable program tend to hold some pretty decent plots to them. There's one I'd recommend (sci-fi) that's titled: Objects ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objects_from_The_Lost_Room) There are some visible plot holes, but I think production was just short on cash to fill them in. Overall, it's a good series. I think this is the main reason I don't watch that much TV anymore. I'm just not part of that audience. Stuff they show now doesn't thrill me. Not trying to sound pretentious (but I know I will anyways), but I tend to watch shows that enlighten me in some way (this coming from a person who considers The Simpsons and South Park as her Bible). If I don't gain some kind of new perspective or get a laugh out of it, then I just feel like I wasted my time and rotted my brain.

A wise man once told me that if there are good looking people on TV (Celebrity TV shows, Celeb news), it's not worth watching unless I have a genuine interest in it.

Me either; all the channels I watch are on YouTube.
And I'm definitely with Anthony on Jersey Shore being a huge pile of crap. I can't stand that "Pooki" girl, or whatever her name is...

Re: Just crap on TV these days
Can't remember the last time I bothered to watch TV longer than an hour. Why do so when all your favorite shows are more easily available through the internet without the pointless commercials in the way?
Even if I had no internet for the convenience, there's still hardly anything worth of interest to watch. All the good shows disappeared years ago and as well as the nostalgia.

Caprica and Stargate Universe were cancelled. Sci-fi is basically dead.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
Agreed... Apparently MTV will no longer air music. While this has been pretty much the reality for some time now, which is why I haven't watched it in decade basically, the idea of a station called Music Television not playing music is just absurd. I got out of watching G4 once they started airing shit like Cops and Cheaters on there. Soon G4, I'm assuming, might not even air anything to do with videogames. Ah well, last time I recalled actually sitting down to watch the tube was.... I can't remember. It'll stay that way too.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
Clearly, you aren't watching enough PBS. : ...yeah, basically I watch a lot of PBS. Lots of fun things on there...if you really like documentaries and MASTERPIECE MOTHERFUCKING THEATER HELL YEAH. I also admit I do watch trashy TV like Cheaters and Jerry Springer, for some reason I think they're funny as hell. There's one channel on broadcast I like, shows Frasier and Curb Your Enthusiasm at night...pretty much the best for brainlessness on broadcast since I don't have TNT anymore and thus am not blessed with the perpetual Lawl and Order re-run marathons. I miss old school Law and Order. Lennie Briscoe was my hero. Law and Order: LA is just pretty much shitty, and SVU is getting stale the more they downplay the characters and their personal struggles and play up shock-value and vigilante stories. And don't get me started on how Criminal Intent went to shit the moment they got rid of Vincent D'Onofrio, or however the hell you spell it... I guess there are always re-runs.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
There really isn't much to follow. That show thrives on creating mystique and having characters do bold, slightly illogical things. Any explaination they could come up with would only ruin the atmosphere they had already created by making it rudamentary. I liked the characters though and it was well acted in the first couple of seasons. That was enough to keep me interested for a while.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
It would have been far better if they could have kept focus and not made the show longer than it needed to be. When I think about Lost I always think of Babylon 5. There was a story that had a vision from the start and stayed on track despite some actors coming and going and the usual bullshit from the network.

Yeah, I can't say that I feel very passionate about what's on tv at the mo. Don't really watch much.
I'm about to start watch the UK series "Life on Mars" after it being vigorously recommended by a friend. Wish me luck...

Re: Just crap on TV these days
I've watched things like Dexter and Mentalist and enjoy them but they both have huge flaws. I like Dexter but hate the drama and over done monologues "I'm a monster, I can't let the dark passenger get the better of me, blah blah, look at all the normal people and how they act." The mentalist is interesting but maybe it's because I like puzzles and like to guess who did the various crimes. The problem with the show is that it centers around one main character and his "CRAZY ANTICS WHEN SOLVING CASES" while he sometimes gets help from his police friends, often in "HUMOROUS AND CLEVER SCHEMES". Also like many crime investigation shows, the true murderer is never even thought of being the murderer before the first half of the episode, the murderer is always the least expected person (The mentally challenged guy who isn't really mentally challenged, the wife, the nice one), and the main character is always right and knows who did it AT LEAST by the time of the second half of the episode.
I'd like better shows to watch, but I really don't want to have to shift through them to find something I'd like.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
I know what you mean. I liked Dexter - I watched the first two seasons but went off it after that however. The pilot episode of Life on Mars was good There are things which I could pick at, but I can overlook them. I enjoyed it and want to see what happens next, so it's a success.

Re: Just crap on TV these days
I saw that yesterday, Outcasts. Even though it was partway through the series it wasn't very hard to get into and it's quite well made for something on British television. I didn't particularly care about most of the characters though, which is probably because I've only seen that one episode. I liked the copper with the pudgey face and felt a little meh about everybody else.
