Post Favorite books turned into a movie?
What is/are your favorite movie(s) that originated from a book or a series of books?

My number one favorite is probably Masterpiece Theatre's 2006 version of the book "Jane Eyre" written by Charlotte Bronte.

Some others that I love are:
"Oliver!" (1968), a musical version of Charles Dickens book "Oliver Twist,"
"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy written by J.R.R. Tolkien,
"Shawshank Redemption," written by Stephen King,
the 1973 cartoon version of "Charlotte's Web" written by E.B. White,
"Tipping the Velvet" & "Fingersmith" written by Sarah Waters,
"Contact" written by Carl Sagan,
"The Wizard of Oz" written by L. Frank Baum,
the 'Harry Potter' series written by J.K. Rawling,
the 'Twilight' series written by Stephenie Meyer,

& I'm sure there are many more that I can't think of right now.

My favorite's got to be Fight Club. The movie was actually better than the book.
Then Lord of the Rings, Shawshank, The Green Mile, Battle Royale, Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, and some of the Harry Potter.

Fear and Loathing is Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson. The book's still best, but the movie does a damn good job of interpreting it!

Oh, and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey!

The only ones I've ever really liked were Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet.

I actually thought the Fingersmith movie/mini series was better than the book, but I was never actually able to get through the book. I should try it again someday.

I know this is a bit of a typical answer, but The Lord of the Rings is definitely my favourite movie adaptation. A lot of Tolkien purists hate the movies, but I love them. It's a very different experience watching the movies but it's still just as awesome.
What I don't understand is why so many LOTR fans were outraged because Tom Bombadil was left out. I hate that prick. I always skip the two chapters in the Fellowship where they're at his cottage and it makes little difference to the flow of the book. All I miss is a bunch of gay singing. This the reason why he was left out the movie - he was completely fucking pointless.

The characters sometimes weren't that true to the book though, especially in the second movie. Faramir was made out to be some kind of emo kid, when he was actually pretty strong-minded and Frodo was nowhere near as whiny and useless in the book. Though I must admit that the sexual tension between him and Sam was just as bad. If not worse.

Testament (1983), based on Carol Amen's "Last Testament"
Lassie come home, based on novel by Eric Knight (Joe's comment "You're my Lassie come home!" at the end, always bring tears to my eyes)
Invasion of the body snatchers (jack Finney)
Nightmare street (Margaret Tabor)
The shining

Never read the book, but let's go with the David Cronenberg film The Dead Zone which is based on the Stephen King novel.

Stephen King's The Body turned into Stand By Me. I really liked the story and I thought the film was excellent too. :thumbsup
I also vaguely remember Apt Pupil (another Stephen King story turned into a film with the same name). I think they messed up the ending in the film, it seemed different compared to the book.
:confused
It's also the only other film I've seen with Ian McKellan in it - Lord Of The Rings and X-Men being the only other two that I know.

The Body and Apt Pupil are from the same book, Different Seasons. the Dead Zone is another one of King's novels i like better in film.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The film Blade Runner was (loosely) based on it. One of my favorite science fiction films - has been for a long time.

Here's one of my favorite scenes from the film:

Great film to watch after smoking a bit of reefer.

LOTR was a pretty good adaption...though casting the dude who played Agent Smith as Elrond mindfucked me for quite a while.

The Exorcist was a pretty okay adaption too, though I like the book better because it's creepier.

The movie Hannibal was better than the book only because of its soundtrack.

Luckily I didn't even notice that. Somebody pointed it out to me months later.

The ending sucked because Clarice didn't go with him. :@
