His brothers and sisters must not have cared about him at all.

Re: Man 'who wanted to be left alone' was dead for four years Something fishy is going on. I've had a personal experience in discovering a dead body, and they do smell. However, this was a fresh corpse and the smell wasn't too bad, but it was strong. If we didn't find out about him until the next day, the sun would have started to magnify the stench. Since we have no idea how big the room is, it's possible he could have died inside and since the room is both dark and large, the smell wouldn't have traveled far (at least to the door). But my problem is that I don't believe they didn't opened the door. If the room was smaller, it's possible the stench could have traveled even farther, going into the connecting room. I guess my point is that you'd probably smell something unless the room was airtight. And I've never been in a house like that. There are cracks under the doors too.
