Post Vuvuzela at the World Cup
Im not really that much into the football and whatnot but I noticed there has been some problem with these "vuvuzela" instruments that South Africans have been using.
Apparently they are too loud and are putting the players off and making it hard for them to concentrate and a few other problems.
Here is a small news report :

Quote:
World Cup: 16-1 for the vuvuzela to be officially banned from stadia before the end of tournament
By Derek McGovern 15/06/2010

In 1970 Uwe Seeler helped wreck our World Cup; 40 years on it's his nephew vuvuzela.
Complaints to FIFA bigwig Sepp Blatter about the ubiquitous plastic horns have fallen on deaf ears, which is Blatter's own fault for sitting so close to one. Then again in South Africa wherever you sit you're close to one.

The vuvuzela is perhaps the most annoying World Cup soundtrack of all time, if you exclude that Terry Venables song.

What's most surprising is they continue to be sounded at half-time, as though fans haven't noticed the game has stopped.

Some say the vuvuzelas emphasise the World Cup's South African-ness in the same way the ticker-tape branded Argentina 78 and stolen jewellery was the Mexico 70 signature.

I say they sound like the mating call of some desperate African female beast, which is perhaps why John Terry seemed so distracted on Saturday.

Hills offer 16-1 (from an early 50-1) for the vuvuzela to be officially banned from stadia before the end of the World Cup. I like the sound of that, especially as Paddy Power go just a paltry 11-8.

This is a quote from the vuvuzela wiki
Quote:
After the Confederations Cup FIFA received complaints from multiple European broadcasters who wanted it banned for the 2010 FIFA World Cup because the sound drowns out the commentators. Prior to the event Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk and Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso also called for a ban, the latter saying the horns make it hard for players to communicate and concentrate while adding nothing to the atmosphere.

I'm not sure about banning them but I think a good idea would be to limit the number of them in the stadium. Then it would give other supporters a chance to sing their chants etc, the players would benefit and it would make more coverage possible of the matches.

Whats your opinion on them?

*almost didn't post topic due to laziness*

I - personally - don't give a rats ass about them vuvuzelas. However, if it is causing a problem with communication and teams aren't playing to their best ability because of them, then I think they will be banned.
When I was in South Africa 12 years ago I heard them and they are pretty loud, but I could tune them out so it didn't bother me so much.
Strange, as the sound of a single baby crying and screaming on a crowded bus pisses me off sometimes.

I fucking hate them. It destroys any attempt at chants - It's just a constant drone. Sure, they're easy to ignore after a while, but they ruin a lot of the atmosphere.

hehe good idea xD

I was talking to my brother about it earlier and I said that a team should all just come out with vuvuzelas just stand in the middle of the field blowing on them or something until the crowd gets annoyed just to make a point.

I like that idea. :laugh But obviously, both teams would have to do it in order to make it work . . . .

Surprisingly they don't really bother me that much. I found it funny when Patrick Evra blamed Frances poor performance on the vuvuzela though.

Good point. Australians ALWAYS bring didgeridoos to football games.

Yes, everyone spends the entire match blowing on a didgeridoo.

And that goes for rugby too because it's also referred to as "football" here.

:laugh

They do sound horrible en mass. It's like a swarm of insects has invaded the stadium. I'm glad I don't watch football, because just hearing it for a few seconds on the news is bad enough.

Tis alike unto a choir of angels, farting in mine fucking ear for 90 fucking minutes.
I think I've got used to them actually. It's like being punched in the face so much that you no longer feel any pain.

That sound is nothing less than torture! :mad I can't understand why FIFA allows it. It's not like it's an important thing about their culture or something like that. At best the instrument of terro has been around since the 1960's; it might be far newer. And a lot of people are badly affected by it. If I had loved soccer and bought tickets to that event, the entire experience would've been ruined for me. I probably couldn't have gone there because of that sonic weapon. No better word for it.

Allegedly the word vuvu means "to make noise" in zulu and that's definitely what it is. Like having a damn swarm of bees just by my ear.

After a few minutes of that terrible noise I can't think coherently, I get dizzy and disoriented.

I want to start a club where everybody in it goes to the next Twilight movie on opening night with vuvuzelas to incite some hardcore teeniebopper violence...

If only I had social and organizational skills.
