 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
What's the story there? You mean that specific edition? Dune should be in most book stores and on Amazon. I'll take some pics of my "rack" and find somewhere to post them soon.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
I enjoyed it alot better than I thought I might. Which balances out the fact that I enjoyed Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy a little less than I expected. I liked the original better than the sequels, but I never became bored of reading through them at any step. It might sound a little silly, but one of the things that impressed me most was the unique pronouns Frank Herbert came up with. In some fantasy books I often feel that the names are so bland that it compromises your ability to 'believe' that the places you are reading about are anything but imaginary. Tolkien is great at naming things too, although as a professor of language you would expect that much. As far as I know the Wells books are unabridged. I think it would be unusual for there to be missing text without any mention of it on the book. They are each about 250-400 pages long and I think the text is a little smaller than in some other books I have. I'd recommend the Island of Dr Moreau most highly, of the ones I have. I like how haphazardly ordered your books are despite mostly being on shelves. Dr. Toxicophilous seems to have us beat so far.. Not counting people who work in book shops ^^. You have an awful amount of Stephen King books though, Toxicoph. I have to admit I can't really bear King much. I like his early work; I have Gerald's Game which I love because of how simple the plot is. The entire book is just about a woman tied to a bed and her yearning for an icy glass of water which she obviously can't reach. I like how without needing any supernatural devices he evokes vulnerability and helplessness. By the way, lol at Necronomicon, I hope thats credited to the mad arab Abdul Alhrazred. Oh... I see you have Dean Kootz as well. I remember reading something he wrote about an escaped simian test subject. I think I preferred that to the Clive Barker I read. A friend lent me a series of Star Wars fiction, which I enjoyed in a totally superficial way. But, it wasn't enough to make me want to read anymore. I'm sure I would enjoy them, they aren't that far removed from Sword and Sorcery fiction which I'm a little too fond of. I'd be embarrassed to show anyone though. Nice Turtle... Tortoise... Whichever it is.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
Yeah I went through a major horror phase when I was younger. I still like horror but now I prefer sci-fi. And the Stephen King hardcovers were prett cheap. Gerald's Game was pretty good but I like something more bloody and epic. Under the Dome was one of his latest and I thought it was one of his best. Yes of course that is one of the three surviving copies of the actual Necronomicon. Hitchhiker's guide was great and a couple of the sequels but the last couple seemed pretty pointless. And now they have a new guy writing even more. Oh well. Money. Frank Herbert's one of my favorite authors. You need to read some of his other stuff life the Pandora Trilogy, Soul Catcher, The Green Brain, etc. I don't see why anybody would abridge H.G. Wells. His stories are short to begin with. Star Wars fiction is great for whiling away your pointless life. I love the characters and want to know everything that happens to them. The turtle is a little carved box thing from...somewhere tropical. I forget.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
I have a ton of books, lying here, lying there... but I do keep a few "general" shelves in the living room, where I keep my more used/ favorite stuff. Mostly its of a technical nature; almost all of the unmarked books you see are either computer or electronic related and are laying on their sides cause they are too tall for my shelves, but I do have a few actual stories on the top that I pulled up from around my house to give an idea of what kind of books I like. There are several magazines and manuals in there too. I also have a massive box full of car brochures, but that's for another time I guess, that box weighs like a hundred pounds and is in the attic. I apologize for the size, btw, I accidentally used the wrong settings.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
I have very few books, so I can't show you guys my rack. All I have are a couple John Irving books, the Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov, an Ursula Leguin book, and a few others. As a kid, I had a large collection of books, but sold them at an auction sale.
When I want to read books, I get them shipped to me via the library's books-by-mail service.
Ideally, what I'd like to have is an E-book reader as I wouldn't have to:
. Pay a cent (for the E-books, that is) . Wait to obtain a copy of a book . Waste paper
I don't think I'd ever bother forming my own collection of physical books as I'm not much of a fan of re-reading stuff. However, I like to collect stuff, so I'd maybe start a collection of first edition hardcover books.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
I've only read 'The World According to Garp' from John Irving; and nothing from the other authors you mentioned. I feel like I should read Isaac Asimov but I've irrationally avoided it because of the amount of times I've seen people recommend him. I still have a strong spirit of contrarianism. I did like Garp; The story about the hotel inspectors with the unicycling bear has stayed with me for reasons I can't really explain.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
Chair: yeah, I gave a lot of my old books away too. i used to have a lot more stories, but they've either gone to the next generation or to Good Will. I prefer books I can actually use over a period of time. All of the technical/computer books I have are relevant probably forever. There are no astronomy books on those shelves, but I do have one right here beside me on my computer desk that I forgot about earlier, lol. I use mostly computer resources for that sort of information,;when it comes to astronomy, books easily become outdated. But, with that said, I still prefer books to e-books. E-books just kill my eyes.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
Then its decided, I'll read it!. (Edit: Why did I double punctuate?) I agree with Quasar about E-books, although I haven't seen what it's like with an e-book reader.

My reader's really nice. It's just like reading off paper. And I don't like reading off a screen either. I like it but it was a gift, I really like physically books and I like to fill up space with thousands of them.

Does HikiCulture like my rack? Bookshelf and CD tower from Ikea (I never realized my lens causes this much barrel distortion). Facts and fiction. There are some names you may recognize. More facts and fiction, also some poetry and old school books. The boring stuff.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
You have an ample rack J.M, very nice. I recognise some of the authors, but the titles are too Finnish(? )for me to recognise all of them. What's that Roald dahl book? I loved him as a kid. Some of the first fiction I read, besides children's books to learn how to read.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
Yeah, good stuff, JM. I was staring at the titles for the longest time thinking "I've never heard of that one!" You've got a lot of William Gibson. I've only read Neuromancer and The Difference Engine(which I didn't like). What else of his is good?

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
It's a collection of short stories. A christmas present from my sister which I haven't read. I think I should. Pattern Recognition is good. It is different from his other books as it takes place in present times. The sequel, Spook Country, was a little disappointment after Pattern Recognition. The Bridge trilogy (Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties) isn't as good as the Neuromancer trilogy IMO.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
It might have 'A Lamb to the Slaughter,' in then. Studying that was a part of my English coursework in high school. I quite like that story. I liked writing an essay on it better than the Sherlock Holmes story we covered at the same time. I didn't really dislike any of the literature I studied at school actually. I always heard people complaining how they hated the texts they had to study. Guess I was lucky. I keep hearing about neuromancer, but I have so many other books I want to try that I never get around to it.

You have Kalevala in your bookshelf. And you're from Finland. You're just missing two things now. A large knife and... This:

This is less than a third of my books; a lot of academic books in Hebrew. I couldn't make more pictures of my other cupboards because they were too big. Please rate my rack.

 Re: Show Me Your Rack!
Dr. Toxicophilous, I have rack envy of you soooooo hard. I have been stalking this thread regularly looking for more delicious bookshelf pics. For some reason, I really love pictures of collections...of libraries, of figures, what have you. I also love pictures of really decorated rooms...ones where there's barely any wall space due to posters and endless shelves of oddities and books. I...actually might have a folder of pics like this to look at when feeling listless. Erm. Yeah. I'm a little strange. Once I move to my new place, I'll poast my delicious racks along with a nice tidy index of my collections. Half the fun of collections is indexing/completing them, after all! It has been bothering me since I went to college that my books are in such a mess. I have probably 400 or so books (not counting the hundreds of tankobans, olol) and I am very particular in how they should be organized...alphabetical by author for fiction, then non-fiction is sorted into "genres" (history, politics, philosophy, memoirs) and alphabetical by author within those collections. However, due to space, my lovely books have gotten all mixed up. I just don't have enough shelves atm to have them all on display and organized and single stacked (I hate it when I have so many books that I have to start putting two rows of books on the same shelf...then I have to pull out other books to find books and it makes me rage). But my new room will have plenty of book space! Six bookcases and counting...and when that fills up, I'll be forced to fill the rest of the house with bookcases and such. I also really should post pictures of my CD collection...I collected a lot as a kid, and then when I was at college, I inherited a collection of 3000 some albums from the radio station. It's madness, sheer madness. ...erm, so, in short, POST MORE PICS DAMN IT. Hi-rez. I wanna be able to see your titles.
