May not be metal or traditional shred, but I spent the better part of 5 years trying to sound half as good and still haven't gotten there.

I know of him and have heard a few tracks in the past but I've never explored his work. In this video I really like his tone and vibrato, my favourite part being his use of the whammy bar. Really nice. What year is this video from?

It's from a famous concert of his "live at the el macambo" recorded in 1983. Highly recommended!
Here is a few proper shred guitarists I enjoy:
Tom Hess (took lessons with him for a short period)
Paul Gilbert vs. Marty Friedman (this is probably my favorite shred vid on all of youtube, tons of great playing and a lot of fun)

Tom Hess... I know him from a compilation CD called "Guitars At An Exhibition". I like to own almost everything relating to neoclassical metal but I remember that I couldn't find his music but now that you reminded me I will have a look.
Paul Gilbert... I think he has a great style but I like Racer X (and their instrumentals) more than his solo work. However I do have a nice Young Guitar DVD of him and I posted the rare "100-Guitar Rock" video on my channel which you might be interested in.
Marty Friedman... I am somewhat ashamed to say that I haven't given him much of a chance yet, even though that exotic/eastern/whatever style is one of my favourite aspects of the genre. Neoclassical + asian/arab influences = eargasm.

Adam - The natural harmonics that Akio Simizu guy hits at around 1:24 are eargasmic.

Agreed, Akio is awesome. He is or was the guitarist for Anthem.

Re: The Super Amazing Shred Metal Guitar Virtuoso Video Thread
Does anyone know why guitar players of this style seem to prefer Stratocaster-type guitars? And why they almost always use guitars with single-coil pick-ups?
I'm assuming it's because they prefer precision to a fuller-sounding tone, and are expecting not to break any strings.

^Cuz Gibson's are gay.
Seriously: There are only two guitarists above with actual strats, Malmsteen and Vaughn. Yngvie's scalloped so it is easier to fret with less pressure which helps to play at break-neck speed and Vaughn played strats because Hendrix did and single coils can run a lot "hotter" than humbuckers, which is important for achieving a rich tone if you use few to no distortion or phaser effects. More generally speaking, most shred guys probably prefer the strat body style because the cut-away makes access to the high frets easier.
^2cents.

Embarrassingly geeky response . . .
First, I disagree about single coil pickups producing a richer tone, but everyone's ears are different, so that's just a matter of personal perception.
I understand the advantage of a cut-away body style, but there are lots of guitars that provide equal or greater fret access. I was really thinking of Strat design aspects other than the body style. The thing that annoys me most about Strats, and most guitars designed to be similar to them, is that you have to unscrew a plate on the back of the body every time you change a string. This means that changing strings is time-consuming and must be avoided when playing live, so the player can never get too heavy-handed. This degree of consistent restraint is not in keeping with my personal taste. I like the tone control features of a Strat-type guitar. But their necks are too narrow for my taste, the body isn't heavy enough to contribute to a rich tone . . . they generally have a plasticky feel to them and the tone always sounds boring to me unless one uses a well-constructed analog distortion pedal. My other Strat-type-guitar criticism is that they don't exactly lend themselves to modification in comparison to guitars in general.
I love my Peavey Predator (Strat copy). It was my first guitar. And the fact that it's really light makes it a fun guitar to bounce around with while playing at home. But I don't use it for recording. I once borrowed a Strat from the 60's or 70's, and it was a very nice guitar to play. Obviously better than the Predator. But I prefer the SG and Les Paul that I acquired later on. If I wanted something vaguely Strat-like, I'd go for a vintage Mosrite, and if I really wanted that single-coil pick-up / light body sound, I'd probably consider a Danelectro first.
But I'm old-fashioned, and, stylistically, prefer Jimmy Page to Jimi Hendrix.

lol a Peavey Predator was my first guitar too.
Rich was a poor choice of words to describe the sound of single coils vs. humbuckers. Truthfully I hate describing the differences between guitar tones with words that have positive/negative connotations to them. The difference is in the partials and enharmonics. Single coils will saturate and feedback on themselves where humbuckers won't so much. The most accurate description in the difference of sound to me would be that gibson's and les pauls stay consistent where strats will sway. I think this is why the quality of a strats sound can vary so widely from one to another, where the gibson's not so much. All gibson's sound good, while some strats sound great and some sound like shit.
As for changing strings, pro's leave the back plate off.

I can understand that, for me SRV was better than all of 'em.

That makes sense. I wonder why it never occurred to me.
I wasn't aware of a difference in tone quality between otherwise identical Strats, so that's interesting. I think what I tend to prefer is a wide array of overtones and undertones. To my ears, double-coil pick-ups make the overtones and undertones are more audible.

(I didn't watch the videos in this thread. My comments were based on the preview images, and having seen demonstrations by shred guitar virtuosos irl.)
