Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
Here are my choices:
Pizza Hut Burger King Wendy's Office Max Aldi Save-A-Lot Mighty Taco Big Lots Tim Horton's Dunkin' Donuts Dollar Tree Arby's Subway
I am thinking that working making food would be the easiest thing for me to handle with the least amount of social interaction.

The Pharmacy. That's where I want to work.

Coffee shops aren't too difficult. Not Starbucks though.
Working student jobs at university/college is pretty decent. Awesome pay for relatively easy work.

i wouldn't want to work at any of those places but they would probably be good places to learn at
i prefer the more relaxed atmosphere of a bookstore. the customers are much more friendly, especially little old ladies. then there's the hippies and students, oddballs, and people just traveling though. lots of characters with stories to tell (:

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
I'd love to work at a bookstore but there isn't one within driving distance of me. It's so far away that the cost of gas doesn't warrant it.
What I listed is basically all there is, aside from gas stations and Wal-Mart.
As far as a job at school, yeah, I was going to try and get a job doing tech support at my college in the fall. As I'm not technically a current student until then I have to wait.

Yeah, a bookstore or something similar would be nice. I think a library would even be better.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
inside advice is to stay away from dunkin donuts as well as Arby's and subway. subway gets hit hard by the health department and the former two will work you like a dog. at least that's how things are out here in Vegas.. Aldi is a dream job if it's still operating the way it was in the mid to late nineties. the other inside info is more of a personal nature which means it's unreliable info. perfect example is my sister and her friend used to work for dollar tree over summer vacation years ago and didn't get along with the drunkard manager, etc.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
I worked at an art gallery for work experience in high school. I only decided that placement because I was absent from school when everyone else was choosing and took what seemed the best from the remaining available options; I had no interest in art really. It turned out to be loads of fun though. The couple that owned the place were really nice and the work was more like odd-jobs so you wouldn't get bored doing the same thing over and again. So, I think I wouldn't mind a quiet shop to work in either.

I still think the pharmacy is the best place.

I'd rather work outside doing physical work such as building, demolishing, and lifting things. I think I'm going to stay away from food businesses for some strange reason.

You prefer physical work to "proper" jobs? I figured that most of us would hate these kind of jobs as they (usually) require you to be around extroverted people. People with blue-collar type jobs tend to be a lot more extroverted than people with white-collar jobs.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
Physical work is more fulfilling as you seemingly accomplish more with your hands than sitting at a desk or something. Not all of them are full of talkative idiots who bother you constantly. Especially if you can get on stocking in a warehouse or something. I'd also love to work in a bookstore or coffee shop. Trouble is, sometimes even the easiest of jobs requires experience many of us may not have. Not many people seem to be willing to give someone who's brand new a chance these days.

FONEternal took the words right out of my mouth. I think I'd be more anxious in a resteraunt setting than building/fixing up things as I can usually keep to myself.

Comic Book store for me. I worked there for a week while someone was out on vacation. Best week ever. =]

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
I've done some construction/manual labor work. I'd say its a lot less social than working for a fast food place. In that environment, social skills are rarely all that important; all that matters is that you do your job effectively and preferably quickly too. If you can do that and manage to not mess up too much, you shouldn't have any problems with anyone. I also agree with FONEternal that its more more fulfilling work too. The skills you pick up can be used for a life time.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
Basically, anything that is not food service is good. Or at least it's better than food service. Working in some sort of restaurant setting, you will either get worked like a dog, treated like shit, or get some of the worst hours ever. I've worked at pizza places since I was 16 (24 now) and honestly, the best thing you can do at a pizza place is deliver. When delivering, you just drive around and listen to music for the most part. But now, some places, such as Papa John's, want to take every last bit of enjoyability out of even that. Your best bet would probably be to work at either Office Max or Aldi.

Working at the front desk of a hotel isn't TOO bad, in terms of what the work is like and how many assholes there are. On the other hand, it does require a bit of social interaction.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
Never work at Disneyland. They are never real specific in their questions when you apply and then after you get the job, you find out you have to be available on all weekends and even if you call in sick, they still mark it against you for not coming into work. Even if you have a doctor's appointment I bet they still don't care and they mark it against you. And you can't ask for a day off and you have to be available on your days off and you have to request your vacation in 2-3 months in advance but yet they can decide to not give it to you when the time comes.
But if you had been working there for many years, they ease up on you. I bet they don' even care if people quit and they always train new people because they make so much money from visitors it doesn't matter how often people quit and how much money they spend to train new employees.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
Have you looked up or considered any call centers in your area, if there are any? Before I had worked at one, I had no idea that they're all over the place, and will hire anyone who can read and speak English, and you can start out doing in-bound and stay there. With out-bound (telemarketing), you can make more money, but it's kind of stressful. I did in-bound most of the time that I worked at a call center - just sat there, waiting for a call to come in. When one did, I just had to read what came up on the computer screen to them, and sometimes do some typing. It was ridiculously easy, I got to do a lot of reading and writing and daydreaming between calls, and it was a very stable job with a wages I could live off of.
Also, they have Aldi in the US?

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
As far as I know, the only call center around are Geico and Intertech and they don't hire part-time. I would totally do a call center if there were any, though. Contruction and manual labor jobs are also not part-time. I need something that can work around school hours. They havee Aldi n the North Eastern US, at least. I don't actually shop there. It's not...great. They pay really well, though. I'm probably going to apply at Mighty Taco. I'm willing to work the night shift, which is until 2:30AM, which pretty much guarantees that I'll be hired. If I hate it, I'll quit. Also going to apply at the grocery store, specifically for the bakery and the café thing in it, and maybe the deli or...fish counter. The weirdos work at the fish counter, but hardly anyone goes to it so it's good for not having to speak to people. I can stand the smell of fish, I guess.

good luck Rezu. if you work that late then you'll never have to deal with the health inspector so that's good.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
I know that this thread is a little old, but since we get a fair amount of younger people here, I'll share some of my hard earned wisdom. The best job is office worker. No toilet scrubbing, no heavy lifting, no dealing with customers. ( not in an entry level position). Pays ok if not better. Try for a temp job. In a temp job you get a wide range of office experience. Most insurance companies need a entry level person to scan papers into the system and cover for the receptionist during lunches, days off, etc. Almost none of these actually advertise this position. I personally know of three offices in central Florida where you could literally walk in and get a job. Best job in insurance is CSR. customer service rep. Worst is producer (sales rep). Beginner producers usually fail and get screwed. inform your prospective employer that you don't expect to be paid much, but you want to break into the industry. You are good with computers and can scan documents. Research the industry liscence and inform them that eventually you would like to get the (in the case of insurance, the CSR license) appropriate license or certification. You will most likely get the job.
Ok, now for the best beginner job for a future. Helper. Go to the a/ c companies, electricians, or plumbers. Ask to be a helper. The trades all work in basic teams of two. One lead mechanic or master, and a helper or apprentice. These people work closely together and basically live in their truck. Which is more or less a mobile warehouse. The trades have a busy season, and a dead season. When they tell you to save your money, they are not joking. During the busy season, you will be working (no exaggeration) 60 to 80 hours a week. You will be bringing in major, serious cash. When the dead season comes around, 20 hours a week is normal. I was a master mechanic, and I can tell you that no one ever listens the first year. No one I trained ever saved the busy season money. They are always seriously screwed the first year. After learning the trade, you will be given the loaner truck to do the occasional solo job in. (the loaner thuck is the one that lives behind the building that smells like pee. Its the one they give you when your main truck breaks down.) If you do well unsupervised, you will be promoted into a master mechanic and get your own trainee. the trades work, it's not easy, but they are the only jobs left in the USA that actually pay middle class wages anymore.

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
This will surely sound pretty stupid, but a question about blue-collar work... is it necessary a high level of physical fitness? or just being able to endure the work? just what is the minimun of fitness/strengh you would need to "survive" one of those jobs?

Re: Least crappy place to work at as a first job?
I don't think there is a required level of fitness unless the particular company mandates one. Obviously if you have a disability of some sort that inhibits your ability to do physical work, that would be a factor. But I'm clearly not ripped or really strong, rather skinny and weak actually, and I do manual labor everyday at work. It definitely contributes to keeping me healthy.
