Yes, it is his wife in the anime, but the way he said in a japanese voice "mai waifu" kind of stuck with people and they used that term from then on...
The story behind that scene is that teacher is kind of implied to be a sort of a pedo(in an innocently comical way)... so everyone was shocked to see that he actually had a beautiful wife (that he pronounced "waifu"). So the students thought this "waifu" was not real until later on in the show when they actually meet her...

This video pretty much explains that character.... though it edits that part when he shows the pictures, but they're actually pictures of his wife and family

kile, compared to the life sized ones well theyre significantly cheaper and more customizable! i read somewhere that people who have waifus dont think of sexual things with em out of eh respect or whatever so if thts the case with you then i guess you dont need the ehm real life sized one. but a warning though, if you consider yourself a bit mentally off already... moving to that will intensify your insanity i guess. for some reason when the physical comes into play with humans things get really different... its interesting actually.

But actually that character was the main reason I watched that show(as well as the fact that the show itself is a "If you haven't watched it then you don't know shit about anime" kind of show)... I just thought it was funny... I liked him since he's so strange.
