Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Ever saw a really good movie one day and you suddenly realize, "holy crap it's been a week and I'm still thinking about it..."? Obviously most movies are designed to get your emotions swirling around, but I'm talking about the stuff that really got in your head and under your skin. Maybe even changed the way you see the world. Besides the first Matrix movie (which, at the time, simply blew my 12 year old mind and made me paranoid) I'm adding "Memento" to my list. Such a simple idea, but masterfully designed. Definitely the best way to screw with the audience's mind. After seeing the movie I felt compelled to start writing my own "facts" on sticky notes... just in case I get amnesia one day.

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Memento's a wonderful movie. l was in a movie marathon mode when l watched it so the impact wasn't as great as yours for me.
l have a couple that come to mind right now.
Donnie Darko
American History X
Changes my perceptions on certain concepts completely. For most of it, l felt like l was the characters living their nightmares.

2001: A Space Odyssey - not many people like it but it really got me thinking about Man's relationship with technology. Harold and Maude - taught me to appreciate life. The Constant Gardener - a very emotional yet honest portrayal of both personal and political issues. Babel - the concept of lives intersecting is not new but this film put a whole new spin on it. The Hours - how I wish Virginia Woolf was alive to see it.

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Films by Harmony Korine (mostly Gummo and Julien Donkey Boy) tell stories loosely with random images and then geeks out at the exact right moments.
Dead Ringers proved to me that you can create a film with many different genres successfully. The atmosphere is horrific and creepy, yet their is an odd romance involved with all parties. That film stuck with me for a very long time. Also Jeremy Irons' performance in the film is monumental.
Carlos Reygadas is another mastermind that creates films containing old mexican folk stories brought to the modern era and adds a vision of his that can't be duplicated. Never will. Battle In Heaven and Japon left me amazed and a bit depressed at the same time.

Goodbye Solo (A moody movie about a reclusive old man. There's just something about it that affected me deeply.) Man on Wire (A fascinating documentary about the man who tight rope walked between the twin towers.) Shawshank Redemption (Great characters and depressing themes. It really made me think after watching it.) No Country for Old Men (frig the theme of "unpredictability" made me rethink what movies can be.)

Sixteen Candles - no real specific reason, but just one of those few movies I always enjoy watching
Gran Torino - Old grumpy guy with hard shell has a gold heart. Great movie about overcoming diversity.

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
I watched this when I was younger, scarred me for life. It's not that bad, but it got me thinking about death and made my depression worse.

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Movies which remind me of my own past have always an effect on me and often make me cry in the end. Dark Water - Honogurai mizu no soko kara My first J-horror movie ever and I had to think a lot about it. There were those raining scenes where Mitsuko was walking alone on the home way from her kindergarten. When I walked home from school and it was raining then I had always to think about this little girl. It also made me loving a walk in the rain. My Neighbor No. 13 - Rinjin 13-gôIt was about bullying between elementary school graders. When they met each other as adults... well, I always asked myself in the end how it would be look like... if I ever meet my bullies again... Children movies from the 80's can be counted as well. I wanted friends when I was a child... so I could spend my summer vacation with them in an adventurous way like in those movies. Building a tree house, fighting against other children...

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Gosh, I can't believe I haven't seen half the movies mentioned here. It's time to update the ol' "to-watch" list... I thought it was more scary than anything, a sort of "my god, will we actually live to do all this stuff?" And the fact that there was little dialogue was absolutely brilliant. Wish I could come up with stuff like that...

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Good movie. Uh, No Country For Old Men had me thinking about it weeks after seeing it. This is kinda strange, but the 2003 repeat of Peter Pan actually got me really emotional. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was just a bad day for me when I watched it, maybe it triggered something subconsiously that got to me. But I was literally holding back tears at certain points. Weird.

Office Space - This movie has been a driving force behind me since the first time I saw it. A friend even got me an Office Space memorabilia set. It came with an "Initech" coffee mug, which I've shown off in my videos. If there was ever a movie that stuck it to "the man", that was it!

Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, and Battle Royale come to mind. Then there were a lot of movies that scared the crap out of me as a kid.

Grave of the Fireflies also effected me quite a bit. It also made me depressed.

Re: Movies that had a Powerful Effect On You
Speaking of movies like "Grave of the Fireflies", is anyone here a fan of Makoto Shinkai's works? I think "Five Centimeters Per Second" is my favorite movie of all time, and an awesome tearjerker. It's about two introverts, too.

Adding another to my list: Trainspotting.
lt's my current bible. The teachings l live by. Not at all for heroin. l am just attracted to the reckless freedom the characters live despite the shackles they carry with their addiction.
