it's been said that anime is like anything else: there's good stuff and bad stuff. that's definitely true. Ghibli movies are awesome. dragonball is braindead pablum... but animation is also /un/like any other form of storytelling in several respects, and it's those aspects that distinguish it from live-action movies/tv that are worth discussing. With this in mind, I present Cencoroll! : a ramble in 3 parts. (If you want better video quality, start your torrenting, because amazon is sold out.)



Clearly, Pokemon has nothing on this shit. With animation anything is possible. Hell, dropping an amorphous blob on top of a city skyscraper probably presents less of a problem than trying to make sure pigtails don't look like they're covered in hairspray.

Special effects could probably create some of what's happened thus far, but the second point to remember is that whatever happens, it's just more drawings. There's no need for pyrotechnics or models or computer magic ... not that these things are bad, but they'd probably amount to a strange hodgepodge of effects wizardry that would distract an audience. No one is ever going to say, "Oh, that looked so fake," about a cartoon, and perhaps just as importantly, no one says, "awesome effects!" It's the same idiom whether the kids are sitting behind the school or climbing into the Cencomobile... and I guess that's kind of the point... watch on...



I've really been talking about animation in general so far, and it's worth noting that there are some good cartoons outside of Japan ... the Simpsons ... Pixar ... but it's not Anime (TM) we're talking about, it's anime with a lower-case 'a.' There's this universal aesthetic that's shared among lots of movies and shows. It's not like Disney vs. Looney Tunes vs. Hannah Barberra vs. Fox vs. 3D craziness where every studio is trying to reinvent the wheel, so once you've watched a few movies, the representations start to look pretty "normal" across the board.

Maybe the naysayers should check out the classics before they bash the whole genre: Princess Mononoke was the first anime I ever saw, followed by Cowboy Bebop ... I don't know.
Fans: if you were to recommend one movie in a desperate bid to win someone over to the virtues of anime what would it be?

Of course not! It's already strange /and/ I was on drugs. So hard was I tripping that reading subtitles would've been too much effort for several episodes in the middle. So I spent most of the time kicked back, giggling at the visuals.

... but that was so long ago....

I just finished watching Avatar the Last Airbender. Hard to believe a show that good came from Nickelodeon.
Now I just watched the first two episodes of Gantz. Looks really interesting and all the gratuitous violence and nudity reminds me of Elfen Lied.

Gantz is the shit....thats the good stuff....right there!

Me too.. I mean, I tried a couple recently but never got past the second epsiode. They need to be really distinctive to really warrant an interest nowadays.

I used to be very keen on anime when I was younger, but now I don't watch it. I just don't feel that interested anymore. Although, if someone showed me a series that was very good, then I might check it out.

coming from an asian background, i've been watching anime since i was a little kid. stuff like doraemon, pokemon, dragonball and sailor moon were some of the few first animes i watched and i still watch it today! i absolutely love anime, all kinds, all genre, for kids or adult, i love them all, there isnt a series i hate. also i do have some japanese relatives who agrees with äpple, that anime is bad because most otakus in their culture is frowned upon.

I like some of it. I like the style in general as well.

The 2 things I like the most about anime/manga is firstly the story line (of course) I like anime/manga with a moving story line that actually goes somewhere and evokes real emotion within me. Story lines like 'pretty, yet shy girl is in love with the super hawt guy in her class, but he'll never look at her in the same way, meanwhile her male best friend is hiding his feelings for her. Then just as the girl and hawt boy are becoming friends, her best male friend proclaims his feelings towards her, but then, the hawt guy turns around and also does the same! So this pretty, shy girl goes from being the awkward no one to having two different boys lusting after her' This kind of anime/manga I hatehatehatehatehaaaate!!! I love one's like AnoHana, Durarara!!, Fruits Basket, Death Note ect (and yaoi, of course )
The second reason why I like it so much is the perfection that can be achieved with the art; you can create the most beautiful or scarred or ugly character you want, and they will always retain that image, whereas humans are subject to change and are all imperfect. Even though I say, and believe that, I still enjoy cosplaying
I don't consider myself an otaku, because I'm not into gaming (game consoles give me really bad motion sickness ) and I'm not really into technology either, I'm just a nerd.

I've yet to find an anime that stirrs my insides since Mononoke (or 'the medicine seller')...

By "Mononoke" Are you referring to "Princess Mononoke" ? Every now and then I come across a manga/anime that fills me so completely that I can read/watch another one for months. Have you watched other anime?
