 Manga
Hello HC. I'm pretty bored so I'm going to make a recommendation topic. I want to share my favorite series while picking up some of other people's favourites. Click the show button to view an image of the series. 1. Liar Game Liar Game is an intelligent ongoing manga about a young lady named Nao Kanzaki and an ex conman Shinichi Akiyama and how they got tied up into the mysterious Liar Game. The Liar Game has players forced to lie to other players and cheat whenever possible through a series of games. If one loses the liar game they are forced into debt by the Liar Game corporation. Luckily Nao Kanzaki thinks she has found a way to stop the Liar Game corporation. I'd recommend this series to anyone who enjoys puzzles and shows/books involving logic. 2. Welcome to the NHK I'm pretty positive this series is popular around here seeing how it deals with the hikikomori phenomenon, reclusive behaviour, and other social problems. Tatsuhiro Satō is a hikikomori who one day comes to the conclusion that the Japanese broadcaster NHK (which he believes stands for Nihon Hikikomori Kyōkai) is conspiring against him in order to turn him and others alike into hikikomoris through the broadcasting of anime. One day Satō meets a mysterious girl named Nakahara Misaki who eventually invites Satō to be apart of her project to cure Satō of his hikikomori lifestyle. I recommend this series to anyone who hasn't read it yet as most people here could find something in the series that they can relate to. 3. Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge This is a really short series (8 chapters ) that like Welcome to the NHK is adapted from a novel written by Takimoto Tatsuhiko (forgot to mention that). The manga follows Yosuke, a negative young man who one day meets a young girl named Eri. Eri is far from being a normal girl, in fact everyday she battles a giant Chainsaw wielding monster of a man. Yousuke unsatisfied with his uneventful life decides he is going to help Eri fight the Chainsaw man. I recommend this to any fans of Welcome to the NHK as you'll find the depressive themes and the comedy that is similar to what's found in Welcome to the NHK. Takimoto Tatsuhiko might actually express some of his character in this series like he did in Welcome to the NHK (Takimoto Tatsuhiko is a hikikomori). I'll write more later but I want to hear other people's favourite manga series first. Also excuse my writing I'm tired as jeebies .

4. Highschool of the Dead I've seen a few zombie fans in Hikiculture (XBlacky to name one) so I thought I'd reccomend this one. Highschool of the Dead follows a group of highschool students as they kill zombies and make their way to safety. It just got over its long hiatus and also has recieved the green light for an anime adaption. It's an entertaining series and it has all the zombie gore you'd expect from zombie thrillers and zombie games.

 Re: Manga
I'll check out Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge, it looks interesting.
An interesting manga I know about is MPD Psycho, it's about a detective with Multiple Personality Disorder and it's really good. Pretty graphic though, so there are some pages for the gore fans!

It's definitely worth a read. I'll have to read that since I mainly like series that have psychological themes.

 Re: Manga
And if you want CLASSICAL manga, read Doraemon and Sazae-san. They are both really funny!

 Re: Manga
I've read a bit of Doraemon but I havn't heard of the other one. 5. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Agh another one everyone on this board has probably heard of but whatever. Nozumo Itoshiki is an extremly negative teacher who one day while trying to off himself an extremlypositive girl Kafuka finds him hanging from a tree and saves him (nearly killing him actually). Nozumo finds that Kafuka is one of his students along with a number of other problematic girls. The series pokes fun at various Japanese norms and ideas sometimes itself aswell. I suppose it can be difficult for people like me to understand most of the references but it's still an entertaining series. I reccomend this series to anyone who's looking for a dark comedy that's easy to pick up (the series doens't follow any plot whatsoever).

 Re: Manga
Hehe. I liked The Liar Game when I read some chapters online. But I guess I will have to wait for a German release - the rules got always more and more complicated to follow. I'd like to read Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge once, sounds promising. I'll recommend some manga I enjoyed: King of Thorn (Ibara No O)Two twins, separated by fatal illness and a selective cure. Kasumi and her sister, Shizuku, were infected with the Medusa virus, which slowly turns the victim to stone. There is no cure, but of the two only Kasumi is selected to go into a sort of cryogenically frozen state along with 159 others until a cure is found. At some point in the undetermined future, Kasumi awakens to find herself and others who were in suspended animation in an unfamiliar world with violent monsters. Resolving to unlock the mysteries of her current situation and the fate of her twin sister, Kasumi struggles to survive in a treacherous world. MushishiSome live in the deep darkness behind your eyelids. Some eat silence. Some thoughtlessly kill. Some simply drive men mad. Shortly after life emerged from the primordial ooze, these deadly creatures, mushi, came into terrifying being. And they still exist and wreak havoc in the world today. Ginko, a young man with a sardonic smile, has the knowledge and skill to save those plagued by mushi . . . perhaps. The Drifting Classroom (Hyouryuu Kyoushitsu)Out of nowhere, a Japanese elementary school is transported out of the world they know, and into a nightmarish wasteland. Have they gone to another planet, or is this toxic world actually a vision of Earth's future? Soon, the students and teachers must struggle to survive in impossible conditions, besieged by terrifying creatures and beset by madness. Part Lord of the Flies, part post-apocalyptic science fiction, The Drifting Classroom (1972-1974) is a classic can't-put-down manga series. It was adapted into a Japanese live-action movie (1987). Wild AdapterMakoto Kubota wandered through life, not taking things too seriously or looking too deep within himself. His job as the head of the Izumo Group's youth gang kept him pleasantly occupied with yakuza wars, mahjong and assassinations... Until the day he stumbled upon a strange drug called Wild Adapter that produces bizarre side-effects--including death. Forever changed, Kubota becomes entangled with a drifter named Minoru Tokito, and the two form an unlikely companionship that draws them deeper into the mystery of Wild Adapter... Go!Go!Heaven - Suicide ShoujotaiIt tells the story of four friends who plan to commit suicide, but want to do it in a large extravagant way. The best way they think to do this is by forming a rock band, and at the peak of their success to commit suicide in the middle of a concert. However, when they realize they have a loyal following of fans that care for them things get complicated.

Yeah it's good thing it's still going. The author is infamous for dropping and creating new series like it's nobody's business.

 Re: Manga
i suggest just about anything narumi kakinouchi has done; she usually does the romantic-horror/sci-fi kind of thing and her art is the best i've seen. XD also, if you're into the really weird shit i would say read some kago shintaro! the tomie series by junji ito is probably my all-time favorite, though so i suggest that one as well. <3

 Re: Manga
I don't see much in common between regular manga, avantgarde manga and guro manga. Usualy the work always belongs to one of the three....take as an example Elfen Lied, which has elements of gore but is a very "normal" anime which guro fans find irrelevant. Although Junji Ito is far from being hardcore (in the sense Uziga is), he attracts mostly guro/horror fans. Guro doesn't equal gore after all. Or Nekojiru, which a lot of people who hate anime and manga enjoy, simply because it's different. It's all about the atmosphere. Tomie was nice because of creating atmosphere of hopelessness. Although I like much more Uzumaki. Suck it is my favourite Shintaro creation.

Iono-sama Fanatics - Basically a cute yuri harem manga about a queen with an obsession with black-haired girls who goes to Japan to expand her troupe of concubines. It's nothing earth shattering, but it's sweet and funny nonetheless.

 Re: Manga
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is my favorite of all manga. I dunno why, I just really, really enjoy it. I took a look at Koji Kumeta's assistant's work, Hayate the Combat Butler, it's pretty good too. If you've ever seen a trope called, "Serious Business", then you'll know what I mean. Think about Yu-Gi-Oh. Apparently, playing a children's card game is Serious Business. Same deal with Pokemon. You hardly ever see anyone doing anything without the lightest help from Pokemon. In Hayate, being a butler is Serious Business. As TvTropes states, "The bare minimum seems to be equivalent to applying for a shounen fighting manga's character job. Props if you also have a Finishing Move. * You act as though having a Finishing Move is a bonus. It is made abundantly clear early on that all butlers should have at least one. " So yeah.

She was finally captured, and as punishment sent to Earth to live an endless series of tragic lives. She now inhabits the body of Setsuna Mudo, a troubled teen in love with his sister Sara. Re: Manga
My favourite manga is Kazuki Takahashi’s “Yu-Gi-Oh!” in which a boy is being bullied in school. When he receives a penchant everything changes and he is able to challenge his adversaries to what he calls shadow games. Losing a shadow game is no laughing matter. I just love how the games become real!
Dragonball by Akira Toriyama is also okay. Son-Goku grows up with a man he believes to be his grandfather. He is very innocent and also a natural martial arts fighter. He must save the world from all sorts of monsters from secret armies and aliens to giant robots. The first books in the series played a lot on humour while the rest of the books are more action oriented. Personally I missed the humour in the later books. Rumiko Takahashi’s “Ranma ½" is about the tomboy Akane and her new acquaintance Ranma, son of her father’s friend and fellow martial arts fighter. Ranma has a secret: After falling into a cursed well he turns into a girl when exposed to cold water. Warm water turns him back to a being a boy. This series is considered romantic by some, but I think the silliness of those aspects (some very extreme characters here!) as well as the nutty humour the series is jammed full of, prevents it from being really ‘girly’.
Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto: about an orphaned boy whose goal in life is to become a ninja.
Time stranger Kyoko by Arina Tanemura. Pretty girly series, very beautiful characters.

 Re: Manga
Honestly I don't read a lot of manga, but I really enjoyed NHK. Even if it weren't focused around a hikikomori, the way it's written, the animation, the pace, everything in general meets what I want in a manga. The fact that it focuses around a hikikomori just makes it a double-win for me. Hey Aconcit you should check out the live actions if you haven't already, they're pretty good. Re: Manga
Apologies for the double post but I wanted to recommend another series. 6. Bokurano This series is amazing me in its style. It looks like a giant robot anime (which it is) but there's a lot more to it. The reason I keep reading it is that every couple of chapters revolves around one of the 15 kids in the story and its their personal stories which makes it interesting (for a good reason too which you'd find out if you read it). The characters are well made and the series dives deep into their problems of the kids whether it's paranoia, nihilism, depression. You'll have to read a couple of chapters to see what the main catch of the series is so I won't spoil it. This series has some cool action sequences and great characters so I recommend this to all who are looking for a semi depressing manga series to read. Plot: There are fifteen kids attending a science summer camp and one day they decide to explore a cave. In the cave to their surprise they meet a strange man who asks if they want to play a game in which they control a giant robot fighting other robotic enemies. The kids all sign a contract (save for the youngest) and they soon find that what they've gotten them selves into is much more than a game. They find that the world's existence is in their hands and if they refuse to fight the world will be destroyed. I probably make it sound corny and generic but seriously go read it! I'm loving this series!

 Re: Manga
Bokurano is really good. I was able to tell that right away. I watched the anime, but I stopped watching it around episode 9 because it's so damn depressing that it would leave me in a depressed mood for the rest of the day. Not something I really need right now.

 Re: Manga
For those that liked Bokurano (I haven't actually read it yet, but I plan to) check out Narutaru (Shadow Star). It's by the same demented mind who made Bokurano. The ending of both the anime and manga were a little lackluster, but I think it's worth reading. The manga can be hard to read at times - some of it made me sick, but it's still one of my favorites. Aconcit's description of Bokurano made it sound very similar.

 Re: Manga
I'll have to check that out seeing how I'm liking the dark mind of the author. I just read another short series by him (one chapter ) and it was an enjoyable little thought provoking story. 7. Kare no Satsujin Keikaku This is a one chapter story about a boy that spontaneously decides that he wants to kill somebody just for the experience. Throughout the story he needs to pick a target, a place, and a day in order to follow through this action. I won't say anymore because it's very short but yeah it's interesting and it's quite easy to find scanlations for it. So if you want a short darkish series that will pass 10-15 minutes of your life then I recommend this to you.
