"Game of the Year for sure"
Movie sequels generally don't live up to expectations. Most of them fail horribly. Thankfully, so many video games seem able to dodge this affliction.
God of War III on PlayStation 3 has received an ungodly amount of hype. And, well, it's more than worth it. If it's possible for something that was called the game of the year in some circles six months before its release to go beyond expectations, then GOW III has done that.
These new exclusive titles that have landed on the PS3 of late -- Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, KillZone 2 -- are really making the most out of the technical muscle inside the PS3. This game is no different. It looks grandiose, a cinematic epic of the gaming world. The setting of Mount Olympus, monstrous Titans, sea gods, Hades -- they're all larger-than-life myths that are portrayed in spectacular proportion in this game.
Not only the cinematics, but the graphics, the polish, the feel -- they're are all over-the-top.
But the story is really what makes the game. This is the final chapter in the story of Kratos, a tortured soul whose family was murdered so he set out on a revenge mission. He's also the son of Zeus, a father who has plotted against him. So now Kratos, with his magical powers and deadly weapons, is hellbent on a mission to not only kill the most powerful god on Mount Olympus but also all the other gods along the way.
While this is very Clash-of-the-Titans-ish, it's also following the trend of some very grown-up games on the PS3. Yes, there's some gratuitous (and cheesy) sex in God of War III, and the violence is, intentionally, overly graphic.
The underlying theme is this mortal beast was turned into something supernatural, and supernasty, to do the dirty work of the gods. When he turns on his handlers, it is fuelled by revenge but the blood lust has taken over.
The brutal and graphic death scenes and sounds are not for the squeamish. The fact that it's such a mythical setting cushions the shock a bit; it's a Minotaur getting its neck snapped, not a rival soldier, so there's a bit of the green-blood scenario going on.
It all adds to an atmosphere and theme that is chaotic and gripping. The story and the way it plays out will lead to some marathon gaming sessions.
The gameplay itself is mostly familiar to those who have played the previous two versions (if you haven't, they're combined on one spiffy new Blu-ray disc to play through on the PS3). You follow a pretty much linear path, gaining weapons through experience points and powering them up, then using them in combination on either smaller hordes or bigger sub-bosses.
Considering you're fighting the mythical Greek gods, there are a lot of boss battles. While they're varied in how you have to take them down, they often follow the same sequence: get to the breaking point, then follow the directions on which buttons to press.
I wish the game were a little more free-flowing and that you had to figure out the final strategy of how to beat them or have different ways to do it, but, ultimately, it's still not easy, as you rely on reactions rather than strategy, and most bosses are going to cost you lives before you figure them out.
The ending, or rather the route to the ending, may disappoint some, but remember: this is tying up a massive overall story arc and it doesn't diminish the quality of the game.
There is no way anyone who enjoys action games could not play through this game and say they didn't get their money's worth. It truly is a must-own for those who appreciate storytelling and the technical power behind the PS3.
Rating: M for Mature: blood, violence, sexual content
What's right: Storytelling, graphics, bosses
What's wrong: Path is quite linear
Numb thumb: Graphics A+; Gameplay A; Control A-; Value A. Overall an A on the Numb thumb.http://www.theprovince.com/life/Game+Ye ... story.html

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
have you played it? what do you think? so far i like it a hell of a lot more than ff13, though i find the game's puzzles to be too simple and it's easy for me to loose interest in playing it. the game i'm really anticipating is Fallout: New Vegas.

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
I really can't help but feel bad. I played the demo, and a little bit of the actual game with a friend. While it did look nice, it feels goofy. GOW is a decent trilogy, but for GOW3 to get the Game of the Year award? No. Not even possible. GOW3 wouldn't even exist if GOW2 hadn't had such a disappointing ending. Santa Monica Studios, I feel, is just milking people who liked GOW (and GOW2).
But it's not a bad game.

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
I wish I had a PS3 for this. And MGS4. And Ratchet and Clank. And Disgaea 3. It always sucks when sequels come out on the next-gen consoles and you can't afford to play them.

Game of the Year will always be from the Touhou Project series. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
Is there a new game coming out this year? *touhou ignorance* I've never been a fan of the God of War series and I'm sure my personal GotY will be some obscure and underated game.

Metroid: Other M could be a possible GOTY candidate. It's basically the last new game that I am excited for. Prime series is over... New stuff from here on out!

That actually could be a candidate for mine too. It looks Super Metroid inspired ( I haven't looked at the coverage since it was announced though).

WTF is Touhou? The Last Story has a 99% chance of being Game of the Year.

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
I played the GOW 3 demo and thought it was a lot of fun as well as quite easy on the eyes graphically. However, as much as I enjoyed it, my overall impression was that it was great, but I didn't feel like I was playing a new game. It had a very 'been there, done that' quality to it. So I'm definitely going to pick it up, but not until it comes down in price. I don't know about that, Adam. Everything that Hironobu Sakaguchi has made in recent years (Blue Dragon and ASH, for example) has been a flop, so I'm not running out and getting a Wii just yet. My high hopes are for The Last Guardian for the PS3 that is being developed by the makers of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
Well, I mean GotY for me. =P I definitely don't expect it to sell that well, at least not outside Japan. I actually liked Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey (also by Mistwalker) is my second-favorite RPG of the last decade. I haven't played much of ASH yet, but the gameplay seems at least decent and I really like the music and art style. To me, Mistwalker is the new Squaresoft (Square-Enix is the new Acclaim -_-).

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
MOST of the games mentioned here are good but on a global scale there more of a cult classic or unheard of by some. I'm getting a copy of red dead redemption in 2 days so I'll see how that does in par with my other candidates ^^ demon souls may hit up there since its global now (European version out soon) and sold more than expected...but we'll see....

I have a small selection of Portal 2 or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. This year's games have not tried any more. Rate in general not possible.

Re: "Game of the Year for sure"
Skyrim was really good but some of the flaws made me enjoy it less than other games. I'm adding Skyward Sword and Space Chem to my list. Skyward Sword is probably the best Zelda game since Majora's Mask in my opinion. So far it's soo much better than Twilight Princess. I might have to replay Twilight Princess on the Gamecube because the Waggle and HUD detract from the game. And Space Chem is an excellent programming puzzle game. You have to make routes to bond atoms together to create compounds. Then you output them into pipes that lead to a vehicle for shipment. I picked it up because it was recommended by a lot of people and was cheap due to the Steam Sale.
