Post Is music a cliched interest?
The other day I was having a discussion which inspired some thinking. I basically said that I'm not interested in many things; That music is one of my few major interests. A friend of mine made a comment saying that music is a cliched interest.

In all honesty, I might have to say that I agree with him. So many people enjoy music. However, only musical minded people actually care about the music. So I am at the middle ground...

Opinions?

I think it's stupid to say that music is a clichéd interest. Just because something is common doesn't make it cliché. Music is universally enjoyed, so it's obvious why many people will claim it to be an interest.

To me, cliché is more when a particular group of people say/do annoyingly stereotypical things, like when an emo person puts "x" before and after their nickname.

Things which are trite, and therefore annoying are how I definite the word "cliché".

If you enjoy something, then say it. Don't hide it because they might judge it as clichéd or the like. Are you sure he was being entirely serious and not just winding you up though?

TBH, the conversation was about deviating from society. To which he said that my interests were cliche. Changing my interests for a plebeian is not on my to-do list. So, that's not difficult.

Maybe it depends on whether "interest" is meant as a hobby or simply something you enjoy.

You could also say ice cream is a cliched interest. Lots of people enjoy eating ice cream, but how many people spend a good chunk of their spare time making ice cream, or reading books about it, or running a business devoted to it?

It's the same with music. Of course most people like music, and the importance it has to different people tends to vary. But when I say that I'm "into music" or "a muso" or "a music person", I'm talking about it as an active hobby. I don't just listen to music; I play music, write music, read about music, act as a roadie when necessary, teach other people how to play, collect records, collect vintage instruments, restore vintage instruments, and plan on hosting an open mic and doing a radio show starting next month.

If the station approves my idea, it will be.

We have a nice community radio station around here - entirely supported by volunteers and donations. I did their training about 10 years ago, so I have a general feel for the place and what they tend to be looking for. (I also listen to the station on a regular basis.) I've been planning on going to the volunteer training session that's being held in a couple of weeks. I know there's a greater need for people who want to do "behind the scenes" stuff and journalism than people who want to do a weekly music show. But I also know that if you have a unique idea for a music show that's nothing like what they currently have, they'll likely at least be open to it.

So, if all goes according to plan, I'll come prepared to present them with my unique idea and demonstrate that I'm serious about it and could actually make it work. And I'll offer to do "behind the scenes" work for them too; after all, I could probably get academic credit for it.

So wish me luck!
