I hope one day I can attend a college. The only problem is where to get myself a place to stay with a room of my own. Probably next year I'll be choosing colleges, so it makes ma a little nervous since I don't have a clue where I want to go.

I've went to college for two semesters. The first was in January of '09 for the Spring semester & the second was in August of '09 for the Fall semester. I went full time (four classes) each time & it was very difficult because it required me to leave the house so often. Twice a week for hours was just way to much for me. All of my classes were on campus my first semester & I withdrew from two of the classes partially because of it. Then, during this last Fall semester, I figure I'd make it easier on myself & take only two on campus & the other two online. I still ended up having to withdraw from both my online classes because I was afraid to leave the house that often (every Tuesday & Thursday). It was just too hard having to leave the house & then deal with the buses, & then school, itself, & then buses again & then walking home alone in the dark.

This Summer semester, beginning on June 7th, I'm registered for one online class-- one of the classes I had to withdraw from during the Fall because I was too afraid to leave the house (United States History I). Since it's online, I won't have to worry about leaving the house. I may register for one more if I can find any that I'm interested in. But I might end up having to withdraw from it depending on whatever happens with my mom over the next few weeks.

the article senmee posted in the how do you feel today thread got me thinking about this again. http://chronicle.com/article/Graduate-School-in-the/44846/
the more i think about going to get my associates for three or four years since i can't attend full time and not be able to get a better job than what i can get now with that degree, the more i think about getting a certificate online and being able to have more options with that certificate than what i have now.

I know I'm like a total downer on college. I think it was a good option once, but with the economy a mess, baby boomers refusing to retire,
the backlog of recent graduates all trying to find jobs, it isn't economically feasible to go to college for just anything and expect to be any
better off.

The nice thing about online colleges is that they are cheaper (since you don't need to pay for illusory "prestige") and you have the added
benefit of flexibility. I'm not sure if college in any of it's forms makes one any more competitive. These days, it's all about networking and
social crap.

College is definitely not what it used to be, but not going will screw you if you don't have some very unique skills AND a avenue to network those skills to potential employers.

If you going to bother with college, you need to get over any prejudice you have toward technical degrees and pursue something within that vein. A degree in any form of engineering still means something and engineers are always needed and/or perceived as valuable by most companies.

I'm in it right now, going into my third year pretty soon.

The first time I went to college was right out of high school when I was 18. I got half way through my second semester and I just completely fell apart mentally/emotionally so I dropped out. I'm 26 now and made the decision to go back to school and try to do something I can be proud of. I've been back in school for a year now so at least I lasted longer than the last time I was in college... hopefully I make it all the way through this time. Although the academic work isn't my favorite thing in the world there isn't any of it that I can't handle, the real struggle is convincing myself to stick with it and keep going.

I definitely don't enjoy the social aspect of being in college again so I tend to keep to myself and not talk to anyone. I prefer to just go to class, get my work done and leave. Being a few years older than the majority of people I'm in classes with makes things a bit weird as well...

Haven't really got the chance to attend due to financial worries right now. From what I heard from my sister, it's different than whatever high school experiences we've gone through but not at all that different to me, what with the social part of it. I want to go to make something of myself and have a chance somewhere in life but then again I don't. School has been a pain the ass for as long as I can remember and my last years in high school were pretty much fail.

At this point, I can't decide. When the time comes, I'll probably have to go for it and likely have to save up for the expenses on my own. Loans are out of the question.
