 College phobia
Do you have college phobia?
I've always wanted to attend college, but I have a strong phobia of such places. At this point, attending college out of the question.
I feel anxiety in most social situations, but college especially would be difficult.
I can't help but feel envy for people who pursue degrees, but I also feel a certain amount of jealousy - I strongly dislike it when people speak of college. |

 Re: College phobia
I've attended city college for two years and then I stopped. I took mostly history, philosophy and biology related classes. Some days really weren't all that bad, but most were pretty stressful. I sort of got physically sick from being there, but I wouldn't exactly say it was a phobia. It got to a point where I didn't want to put up with it anymore.

I have a passionate dislike for the academical world and all things related to it. I guess you could say I have a phobia too, because just thinking of it or being around college/uni students makes me feel sickened.

 Re: College phobia
I don't have a phobia of college, but I do have a hard time going, which is why I had to withdraw from the classes I was taking on campus in around October.

I don't have against colleges/universities. But if the classes are looking like that... There is no way I would bear this... being the whole time in such a crowd.

 Re: College phobia
I can't decide if I should post or not, but eh, what the hell...
When I was in high school I was terrified at the thought of going to college, but I had no choice, so I ended up at a community college. It's nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, and it's certainly much less stress than high school was. Being able to just walk out when things get too stressful helps a lot. Although, I find the level of suckage varies greatly depending on the department. I'm in computer information systems so most of my classes are programming and other random IT related crap, which doesn't involve really any groupwork or talking to other people, but the obligatory liberal arts/gen-ed classes do and are proportionately more miserable.
But I'm transferring to a university in September, and I have this feeling that it's going to get worse. So maybe I'm just redeveloping the fear of it. Hm.

 Re: College phobia
Ah, I went to a suny community college too. It really sounds like you'll do O.K. once you transfer, rezu. Unfortunately the SUNY went so horribly wrong for me. Lets just say, "I had six of those symptoms." & leave it at that.
There are a few things I learned that I would like to share with everyone real quick. At the community college day classes- everybody looks like they don't want to be there. They don't come to class to learn. They show up because they feel like they have to. Which means they honestly just want class to end so they can get out. Meanwhile the night classes usually have students who just want to further their own career. More mature students who usually don't care one way or the other about you. How you look, how you act; There isn't a judgmental, does this person fit-in? type of atmosphere day after day.
Do I suffer from a phobia? Maybe. Just thinking about college fills me with a gut wrenching pain. Even with a 'phobia' I've figured my own way to approach college and deal with its lifestyle. College/University may even be fun for most of you.... It's supposed to be better than high school. So please, don't give up without even trying. Take one semester to see how it turns out. But most importantly- don't assume you have some phobia and use that as an excuse to stay inside.
/failed motivational attempt end. I'm not articulate at all, lol ><

 Re: College phobia
Heheh, SUNY...I'll probably be okay. A lot of it is being nervous about having to drive into the city and deal with fuckheads and nutcases. But I've noticed that about night classes too. Also, the entire atmosphere different at night. The school itself is pretty much deserted and less people tend to be in the class itself. And most of those people are older and easier to deal with.
The worst classes for people who don't want to be there, the ones that feel most like high school, are pretty much the gen-eds. My most miserable college experiences have been in gen-ed classes. But, the good news is, most of them can be taken online. Online classes are awesome...

Half of the time it was pretty packed at the CUNY school I went to, but the night was a tad better.

 Re: College phobia
Except the cognitive irrational, symtoms all of them but the description I do not fit. But rather frankly I don't feel like I’m getting an education I’m actually a tab bit bored I’m sick of the fucking social pretene that is even their. If you want me to perform better tutor try to be more enocuraging quite frankly I’m disroucraged by the little help I get with understanding your nonsensical meusings. they don't actually make much sense at all the text book is to be quite frank as full of original insight as actually a spoon of sugar has more original insight so the anlgoy doesn't work it makes no sense it confuses me it makes issues unnecisarily unclear you could sometimes just skip 4 or 5 pages and if what you put at the end is true simply add an exclaimer the details of the terminology we are using has not been worked out… which assumes that the person has not read the previous pages and realized that already. quite frankly yes of course their not worked out the word’s don't even seam to have fucking definitions at this rate it’s moronic. It’s like we use word’s like “a the with a the with the a with a the with the with a the with of from the a with the from the a with the a with from conforgatianapalotomanioacatamaionitcian socialias scar society.” If you’ve not read the text book you won’t get it honestly you’l get it if you’ve sttutdied a real science and starting reading this confabulation of rubbish. you would see that it’s confounded in constantly. I also find it hard to read what is going on because of any literal nature to this text it seams like it is fll of pointless meaningless metaphors, with unclear clarifiers and obtuse compounds. describing no new information.

 Re: College phobia
I'm studying at university right now. This is my first year. I don't know if I will last until the end of it but I will definitely not continue after finishing the year. I rarely attend any lectures and feel horrible when arround classmates. Specially in spring/summer, when people are overexcited and cocky.

I'm starting college classes for the first time in a couple weeks. I'm extremely nervous, but that's okay. I can overcome as I have in the past. I must go ahead with it because I have to do something, and getting a job is out of the question. Besides, I really do want an education.

 Re: College phobia
No I don't (didn't), I remember it was hard to get myself to register and actually getting prepared for it, like doing the calls, see a councilor, pay for tuition, deal with my bank, etc, one interesting thing was that even I was awkward at the time of applying, my councilor was rather nice and just thought I had an "attitude", but in reality I was scared shitless, when she saw me again she was quite happy to see me doing well.
As for the classes, it might not be the same for everyone but if you went through highschool, you'll find that people in college are usually better, especially in classes with people in their mid 20s or close to 30s, they're more mature and easier to deal with, and they had to pay for that shit with their own money so naturally they don't want to fuck around.
For me, it was probably the best time of my life since I applied to learn something I was interested in.

 Re: College phobia
As much as I would love to go to college, and take a CS course... some things really hold me back.
I have no clue about my sexuality and dislike "relationships".... this is fine at work, but I can see it causing me a lot more issues at college.
The academics are another thing all together. I already know I will require tons of tutoring in the math subjects... Now, I've always had a major phobia against tutoring; I don't want the person tutoring me to think I'm an idiot, cause I am that bad in math and won't even know half of the stuff I should now. Never was able to memorize the full times table, and I tend to forget math stuff very easily. I may be able to do fractions one day, but the next day, it'll be like trying to interpret Mandarin with no knowledge of Chinese. I just never figured out how to memorize mathematics, my brain just does not work that way. It's more geared towards logistics, literature and language. So, I can see that being a fiasco fiesta by itself. Couple that with the rest of the workload and work, and I can see myself having a complete breakdown really soon. I just can't handle all that at once. Even the easiest days at work drain me about 3x more than my coworkers. But, then again, they also don't have autism and attentional/sensory issues.

I have no fear of college. If anything I have a disdain for people but nothing more fearful than that. I can stay in my room all day anyways, so no problems.

Yes, I don't feel good about the idea. Maybe if I could stay in my own room and just go to class without having to talk to people. But I probably won't be able to stay in my own room, and I'll have to socialize with them. I really want the education though..

 Re: College phobia
I had no real issues with college other than occasional stress due to having heavy work loads during certain semesters. (I was taking 4 math/physics courses back-to-back each semester for about a year and a half. Good thing I love those subjects!) I enjoyed what I learned, even the compulsory gen-ed courses, and enjoyed associating with my fellow math majors. There were only about 8 of us that were upperclassmen math majors at the time so I always had the same people in my courses. Never really concerned myself with the social aspect of college that people who have previously posted seem to be so worried about. I viewed college from a strictly academic sense, and my courses comprised 95% of my time. I don't really see a reason for anxiety in the classroom since no one else in the class really cares about you or what you're doing. They're either listening to the prof or sleeping I did occasionally go out to eat with a classmate, but otherwise, I would simply go to class and then go home. Or maybe stay to do my coursework in the courtyard since the plants and trees were so nice out there. Overall, I'd give college a B+. I didn't give it a higher grade because I didn't get the chance to take all of the math and physics courses that I wanted. I never got to take Vector Analysis because of schedule conflicts, and I would have loved to have taken more physics courses like Relativity and Thermodynamics.

Yea it's pretty much similar to work, except you're being trained together with a crowd. It might be different for different regions I guess and how people sees it, but highschool in the other hand was different because kids weren't treating it as a place to "learn", but a place they were forced to go and wanted as much fun and social as possible, college should be a few notch better and easier to deal with.

 Re: College phobia
Not really.
Probably because I'm not employable at all outside of academia, so I've sort of gotten used to the stress and the awkward social things. It's better when you're immersed into a small subsection of your major. You see the same people mostly, and they're all sort of unbalanced (though maybe that's because historians are intrinsically a little odd).

 Re: College phobia
I get quite a few of the problems listed, but for school, though not as much as I used to. I'll hopefully be going to university next year, but overall I'm not too scared about it because it'll be a lot easier socially than school and people would be a lot nicer. There still are certain elements I'm not sure about though, as I take comfort in having a reasonably fixed routine, so going to uni will be the biggest change in my life.
