Post What instrument would you like to learn?
Fairly simple question, what instrument do you have your eye on learning?

I'm a bassist, but i'd love to have a go at sax. To be able to sound anything like Coltrane, or all my favourite Morphine tracks, would just be amazing. Sax has to be up there with the guitar and piano in my eyes when it comes to feeling-inducing instruments.

bass guitar or piano =]

I've always liked the melodies that come from a piano because it can make such beautiful music that 'calms the soul'.

Bass guitar has been a fascination of mine since jr high but then my boyfriend started talk about it so I didn't try to learn it because I thought that might be weir and then we broke up so I was like poo.. wasted all that time I could be learning something that I actually want to learn.

Acoustic guitar, electric bass, & piano. I've wanted a piano since I was a kid, or at least a keyboard.

Drums. Every time I watch a drumming video, I'm impressed but I have a hard time grasping it. Plus I want to do shit like this.

Sometimes I drum spontaneously with my fingers and get some cool beats (on accident).

Bagpipes! How could i forget! I've always had some kind of weird fascination with them. I think it comes from being an inherently-jealous-of-the-Scots Englishman :p

Have you tried to play them before? I've got a practice chanter but my fingers always get in a tangle trying to change hands! I guess being 100% Scotch doesn't help with playing them any

Never, but someday... I'll add it to the big list of things i'd like to do but am far too busy procrastinating to find the time for :)

I know how to play the violin decently well. I have been thinking about getting better, and practicing more.

Other then that I would love to play the flute or piccolo. Anyone anyone? I think playing a piccolo would be cool. Pocket size and entertainment/torture for everyone.

I'd love to learn piano, only to be able to play Touhou music on them.

If not, guitar or violin for the same reasons.

Or and Ocarina. I have an obsession over those things since Zelda.

I play a pretty big number of instruments, at least to most people I know. Still, I'd love to actually learn piano and/or violin.

Me too for Violin and shamisen.

Ive always wanted to learn the violin since i was a child. However the only response i have ever got from my mum was "its too expensive" :cry2 I cant afford lessons by myself now nor do I have the time.

I've had a go on the shamisen once but sucked at it. It really hurts your hand, the angle you have to have it to hold the pluck is quite straining. My boyfriends sister, mother and grandmother play so well though... I'm jealous. I'd like his grandma to try and teach me if i get to see her again.

Ive also had a go at the bamboo flute/recorder thing (cant remember the name of it) but i couldnt make a sound :'(

I really do think i am musically retarded.

I want to learn how to play the piano. I recently got a keyboard, but I've been feeling really tired lately, so I haven't started practicing yet, but I will probably learn it sometime. I would also like to learn how to play acoustic guitar. I think it would be really nice to know how to play the violin or oboe, but I don't think I'll ever try to learn either of them.

I'd like to learn how to play keyboard properly. (I have one and can play a little, but need to learn more.)

I've always wanted to play xylophone.

Drums. I play, but I don't know how to. And I'd like to take up piping again. I know how to play, but I don't . . .

I played the pipes when I was in high school, and still have mine (but I need to get a new practice chanter - it's broken).

Not an easy instrument to learn because it requires building up muscles you probably wouldn't use for anything else. So you have to be patient and practice every day. The bad news is that once those muscles start to go out of shape because you haven't been practicing, it's almost like starting over again.

The good news is that, while things like leumluaths, toarluaths, doublings, etc are a challenge in the beginning, once you've got them down, they stay with you. At least that's been my experience. I learned all my fancy grace notes by playing them really slowly, focusing on precision, and speeding up as I got better. Now I can go 10 years without playing, and pick up a practice chanter, and play all the grace notes as they should be played.

It's an instrument that requires a lot of diligence and patience, to say the least. But I say it's worth it if you love the music.

When I got into piping, it was mostly older people who were playing, and they mostly liked to play popular tunes, jigs, etc. They thought piobaireachd was boring; I've always liked it and wanted to do my part to keep it alive.

Another bit of advice for anyone interested in piping: I regret doing what most people do - investing in the great highland pipes (phiob mhor) without considering any other kinds. As I see it, the main advantages of the phiob mhor are that they're what people play in bands (join a band, get free lessons), and they're the most popular so it's easiest to find whatever you need for them. But they also take the greatest amount of physical effort to play. I wish I had known about all the different kinds of "parlor pipes" - where the air is fed into the bag via a bellows you pump with your arm. Some of those smaller pipes (Uillean!) have a really nice sound that people rarely get to hear these days.
